A Case Study of Baker Cysts With Intramuscular Extension into the Medial Head of the Gastrocnemius
Baker cysts are common pathological findings during sonography of the popliteal fossa. Although they can present as a typical, mild variant or have an atypical sonographic appearance, a common feature of them is that their expansion is usually limited in the intermuscular planes or spaces between muscles and knee capsule. Baker cysts extending into muscles are rare. Two cases of a Baker cyst with extension into the medial head of the gastrocnemius (MHG) are reported with sonographic findings. Both of the cases were discovered in females, who had anterior or bilateral knee pain and radiographic features of osteoarthritis. K...

Sonographic Detection of Solid Pseudopapillary Epithelial Neoplasm
Solid pseudopapillary epithelial neoplasms are a rare form of exocrine pancreatic tumors. While most of these neoplasms are benign, small percentages are malignant. Complete resection is associated with long-term survival, even in the presence of metastatic disease. This case study presents a solid pseudopapillary epithelial neoplasm arising from the pancreatic tail. The pancreatic neoplasm was initially detected as an incidental finding sonographically and then further investigated by magnetic resonance imaging. This case highlights the importance of documenting incidental findings during sonography and how the combinatio...

Sonographic Appearance of Chromic 2-0 Catgut Sutures in the Parenchyma of a Renal Allograft
A renal transplant recipient had a urinary fistula repaired and a double-pigtail ureteral stent left and later surgically removed. At this same time, an open biopsy was performed and closed with chromic 2-0 catgut sutures. A sonogram revealed an artifactual image that was interpreted as a fragmented piece of the stent that was left in the patient. An exploratory surgery performed, however, was unremarkable, and the renal incision was again closed with chromic 2-0 catgut sutures. A repeated sonogram demonstrated the previous artifact, which raised the suspicion that this appearance should be attributed to the chromic 2-0 ca...

Reversed Diastolic Flow in Page Kidney Following Native Kidney Biopsy: Case Report
This article describes a case of reversed diastolic arterial flow on Doppler insonation in a Page kidney due to external compression as a consequence of native kidney biopsy-induced perinephric hematoma. Reversed diastolic arterial flow has already been reported in Page kidney in renal allografts; however, we are not aware of any report of such a finding in a native kidney. This report highlights the importance of being aware of the possible occurrence of the reversion of the diastolic flow in Doppler sonography in Page kidney, even though it is rare. Moreover, this case illustrates the short but severe impact of Page kidn...

Delayed Annular Pulley Rupture Following Distal Radius Repair
Annular pulley injuries are commonly found in the 3rd and 4th fingers under extreme strain in rock climbers. Here is presented a case of pulley rupture in the 5th finger following surgery to the wrist with no specific injury to the finger itself. The mechanism of injury here is likely to be a combination of repetitive strain during rehabilitation, partial injury during initial fall, and possibly irritation to the tendon caused by surgical hardware. Diagnosis was inconclusive or not possible by other modalities (clinical and imaging) and ultrasound has proved useful here given the correct technique and a good knowledge of a...

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and the Clinical Applications for the Female Pelvis: A Literature Review
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a noninvasive, nonionizing means to therapeutically treat various medical conditions. Although HIFU has proven useful in the treatment of a variety of conditions, in recent years, more research has been conducted on how HIFU treatments can be used to treat conditions related to the female pelvis. Some of the medical conditions being researched are uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, cervicitis, and polycystic ovaries. Clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of HIFU in the treatment of these medical conditions unique to the female pelvis. This literature review will be use...

Using High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound as a Means to Provide Targeted Drug Delivery: A Literature Review
This article is intended to supply the reader with a detailed description of how this technique can be used as well as describe its potential to surpass other treatment methods. Further discussion on the efficiency, limitations, and future of HIFU-mediated drug delivery is addressed. Furthermore, the gaps in the published literature, relative to this topic, are discussed. Ultimately, HIFU-mediated drug delivery is a developing technique that could provide patients with exciting treatment options. (Source: Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography)

Student Participation in Professional Organizations: A Synopsis of Data Collected From CAAHEP-Accredited Sonography Programs
A professional society, organization, or association offers members the opportunity to advance their knowledge and skills and to maintain their certification through organizational activities. By definition, professional societies are formed when a group of individuals with shared interests collaborate to achieve professional goals. Cited benefits of membership in a professional society include being a key resource for maintaining professional values and standards; providing opportunities for continuing education, professional development, networking, and collaboration; providing support for challenging issues; and promoti...

Use of Gray-Level Histograms to Assess Substantia Nigra Echogenicity in Transcranial Sonography Images of Parkinson Disease Patients
A substantial body of research has shown that Parkinson disease (PD) patients display an enlarged hyperechogenic substantia nigra (SN) by transcranial sonography (TCS). Nonetheless, the categorization of SN echogenicity is still subjective. A method is described to quantify SN echogenicity based on the gray-level histograms of digitized TCS images. In 31 PD patients and 57 controls, the gray-scale mean (GSM) of the SN, mesencephalon, and basal cisterns and their ratios were assessed using image-editing computer software. The GSM values were compared between the groups and correlated with age, SN area, and disease duration....

Exploring Targeted Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound to Detect Neural Inflammation: An Example of Standard Nomenclature
Targeted contrast-enhanced ultrasound (TCEUS) is an innovative method of molecular imaging used for detection of inflammatory biomarkers in vivo. By targeting ultrasound contrast to cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), which are known inflammatory markers within neural tissue, a more direct evaluation of neural inflammation can be made. Due to the novel nature of TCEUS, standardized methods of image analysis do not yet exist. Time intensity curve (TIC) shape analysis is currently used in magnetic resonance contrast imaging to determine temporal behavior of perfusion. Therefore, the presented research attempts to determine TIC s...
