Mothers’ experience of their daughters’ fertility problems and treatments.
Journal of Family Psychology, Vol 36(8), Dec 2022, 1418-1427; doi:10.1037/fam0000956Fertility treatments are a stressful experience. However, the support provided by meaningful support figures, such as a mother, may contribute positively to the mental health of women with fertility issues. The present study therefore explored the experience of Israeli mothers whose daughters encountered fertility problems and underwent treatment to bring their first child into the world. In a retrospective qualitative study, face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 women aged 49–73. Women in the study had a daughter...

Weathering the economic storm together: Family identification predicts future well-being during COVID-19 via enhanced financial resilience.
The economic crisis precipitated by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has placed considerable financial pressures on households across the world. These are compounded by the enforced isolation accompanying pandemic restrictions, during which individuals can struggle to access external assistance and often need to rely heavily on the social, emotional, and financial support of other family members. Previous research indicates that family financial stress has negative consequences for the mental health and well-being of members, but that heightened family identification can provide individuals with a stronger sense...

Moderated mediation in relationship education: Communication, commitment, and sociodemographic disadvantage.
This study tested moderated mediation—that is, whether the mechanisms of program impacts are different for different groups of people—in the Supporting Healthy Marriage (SHM) study of relationship education (RE) programs for low-income married couples. Large-scale evaluations of RE programs have yielded small effects in community settings. Understanding program mechanisms specific to disadvantaged populations may help improve program impacts. This study explored whether communication and commitment mediated program effects on relationship outcomes in the SHM study for participants with relatively higher or lower levels...

Within family patterns of relative parental involvement across two generations of Swedish parents.
Journal of Family Psychology, Vol 36(7), Oct 2022, 1240-1248; doi:10.1037/fam0000960This prospective longitudinal study investigated father involvement relative to mother involvement in parent dyads across two generations from the same family. Relative parental involvement was operationalized using measures of how much parents shared parenting responsibilities and to whom their children turned preferentially in various situations. We hypothesized mean level increases towards more equal involvement for fathers and mothers across generations as well as intergenerational continuity of within-family patterns for both aspects o...

Specific parenting behaviors link maternal education to toddlers’ language and social competence.
Maternal sensitive parenting behavior has been shown to account, at least partially, for the relation between family background and children’s language and behavioral outcomes. Yet, as previous studies often used a rather global or domain-general measure of maternal sensitivity, it remains an open question whether different domains of child development are influenced by the different facets of maternal sensitivity. Thus, this study investigated whether specific parenting behaviors differentially mediated the association between maternal education and children’s language and social competence. Drawing on 2,478 mother–...

Parental meta-emotion, attachment to parents, and personal agency in adolescents.
Guided by attachment theory, we explored in the present study the links between parental emotion-coaching, attachment to parents, and adolescent’s sense of agency. Further, we examined a possible mediating role of adolescent’s attachment to parents in the association between parental emotion-coaching and sense of agency. All models control for cumulative psychosocial risk, and adolescents’ sex and age, and take into account the reports of both mothers and fathers. The sample included 501 Portuguese families comprising adolescents, their mothers, and their fathers. Adolescents (ages ranged from 15 to 18) reported on t...

Parental burnout and job burnout in working couples: An actor–partner interdependence model.
This study aimed to examine the spillover effect of parental burnout on job burnout and the crossover effect between spouses simultaneously. In addition, the mediating effect of work–family conflict was also examined. By taking the family as a unit, data were collected on three different occasions within dual-earner couples. Participants were middle school students’ parents (N = 103 dyads); both were employed; self-employed or working-at-home parents were excluded from the sample. The results of an actor–partner interdependence model revealed that the spillover effect of parental burnout on job burnout and the mediat...

Predictors of latent class trajectories of depressive symptoms in Latina mothers.
Guided by the Family Stress Model (FSM) for minority families, the present study examined culture-specific (i.e., stress responses to anti-immigration actions and news, home–school dissonance) and general (i.e., financial strain, social support) risk and promotive factors as longitudinal predictors of Latina mothers’ depressive symptom trajectories. Participants included 271 Latina mothers of early adolescents living in a new immigrant area in the southeast part of the United States, followed prospectively across four time points spanning 2 years. Mothers reported on their depressive symptoms at all four time points; r...

Facilitating the study of familism across racial/ethnic groups: Creation of the Short Attitudinal Familism Scale.
As the research on familism values, or cultural values relating to support, interconnectedness, and obligations has blossomed, scholars are increasingly interested in the applicability and impact of familism values across diverse racial/ethnic youth. However, existing measures of familism tend to be long, posing potential practicality issues and have not been validated for use across youth from different racial/ethnic groups. Through a series of conceptual steps and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, we developed the Short Attitudinal Familism Scale, a 6-item, shortened, unidimensional version of Lugo Steidel an...

Associations between body dissatisfaction and relationship functioning among same-sex female couples: An actor–partner interdependence model.
In this study, women’s own body dissatisfaction was found to be negatively associated with their own relationship functioning, which is consistent with findings of women in male–female couples. Thus, these findings highlight the important role that body dissatisfaction plays in women’s relationship experiences. More research is needed to better understand potential cross-partner effects of body dissatisfaction and relationship factors in same-sex female couples. Dimensions of couples’ sexual communication, relationship satisfaction, and sexual satisfaction: A meta-analysis.
Despite consistent evidence that sexual communication positively correlates with relationship and sexual satisfaction, there has been empirical murkiness regarding which aspects of sexual communication matter more or less for relationship and sexual satisfaction. A systematic meta-analysis was conducted to investigate if the strength of the association between sexual communication and relationship and sexual satisfaction varied by dimensions of sexual communication and individual, interpersonal, and cultural factors. The meta-analysis included 93 studies with 209 unique effect sizes, which represented 38,499 unique individ...
