Menopause impacts the relation of plasma adiponectin levels with the metabolic syndrome

Conclusions. Low plasma levels of adiponectin are associated with increased prevalence of MetS, especially in postmenopausal women. Age and BMI have similar discriminatory accuracies for presence of MetS when compared with age and plasma adiponectin. Thus, we conclude that the association of plasma adiponectin with MetS is significantly affected by menopause but challenge the additional value of adiponectin for the discriminatory accuracy for presence of MetS. Conclusion. Full-dose antiviral therapy with PEG-IFN and ribavirin can be safely carried out even in patients with compensated, fully established cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Selecting patients on the basis of HCV genotype and viral load, and application of on-treatment stopping rule may help rationalize treatment in patients who are unlikely to obtain SVR. Conclusions. Plasma apoM is modestly reduced in type 2 diabetes. Pre-[beta]-HDL and pre-[beta]-HDL formation are positively associated with apoM, supporting the hypothesis that apoM plays a role in HDL remodelling in humans. Lower apoM may provide a mechanism to explain why pre-[beta]-HDL formation is not increased in type 2 diabetes despite elevated PLTP activity. (Source: Journal of Internal Medicine)

Conclusion. There is an intracardiac gradient of NEFA and insulin in Groups I[ndash]III. Cardiac NEFA metabolism was higher in those with mild CAD compared with those with obstructive CAD whereas intracardiac insulin extraction was lower in Group III (diabetic) patients. PCI was associated with a systemic rise in NEFA, with a reduction in insulin levels and cardiac utilization, but these effects were blunted in diabetic patients. Conclusions. These observations demonstrate that oxidation of LDL in the arterial wall may lead to aldehyde-modification of surrounding extracellular matrix proteins and that these modifications may affect macrophage function and activate autoimmune responses of pathophysiological importance for the development of atherosclerosis. Conclusions. C-terminal-pro-endothelin-1 is superior to BNP for the prediction of a peak VO2 < 14 mL kg[minus]1 min[minus]1 in patients referred for CPET. A score incorporating body mass index, diabetes status, spirometry, blood gases, BNP and CT-proET-1 improves the prediction of a peak VO2 < 14 mL kg[minus]1 min[minus]1 based on single biomarkers. Abstract. Patel JV, Abraheem A, Chackathayil J, Gunning M, Creamer J, Hughes EA, Lip GYH (City Hospital, Birmingham; and University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, UK). Circulating biomarkers of angiogenesis as indicators of left ventricular systolic dysfunction amongst patients with coronary artery disease. J Intern Med 2009; doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2796.2008.02057.xBackground. Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) are often asymptomatic. Angiogenesis is implicated in the physiology of vascular repair and cardiac remodelling, and is one of many pathophysi...

Conclusion. In Denmark between 1995 and 2004, there was a major hospital variation in AF patients receiving OAC, and consequently, more thromboembolic events were observed amongst patients from low OAC use hospitals. Our study emphasizes the need for a continued vigilance on implementation of international AF management guidelines. (Source: Journal of Internal Medicine)

Conclusions. The increased occurrence of AF in fracture patients who are users of oral bisphosphonates should be attributed to targeting of bisphosphonates to patients who are already at increased risk of cardiovascular events. (Source: Journal of Internal Medicine)

Conclusions. In a meta-analysis restricted to short-term trials in hypercholesterolaemia, significant potentially favourable changes in lipid and lipoprotein levels relative to baseline occurred with ezetimibe monotherapy. Further long-term studies with cardiovascular and other clinical outcome data are needed to assess the efficacy and safety of ezetimibe more fully. (Source: Journal of Internal Medicine)

Abstract. Jädersten M, Hellström-Lindberg E (Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital Stockholm, Sweden). Myelodysplastic syndromes: biology and treatment (Review). J Intern Med 2008; doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2796.2008.02052.x Optimal management of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) requires an insight into the biology of the disease and the mechanisms of action of the available therapies. This review focuses on low-risk MDS, for which chronic anaemia and eventual progression to acute myeloid leukaemia are the main concerns. We cover the updated World Health Organization classification, the latest prog...
