Irreversible Electroporation: A Novel Ultrasound-guided Modality for Non-thermal Tumor Ablation
Publication date: December 2017 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound, Volume 25, Issue 4 Author(s): Chih-Yang Hsiao, Kai-Wen Huang Ultrasound-guided tumor ablation techniques have been proven to be highly effective and minimally invasive in the treatment of many diseases. Traditional approaches to ablation include microwave and radiofrequency techniques, cryotherapy, and high-intensity focused ultrasound. However, these methods are prone to heat-sink effects that can diminish the effectiveness of treatment and damage adjacent structures, such as bile ducts, blood vessels, the gallbladder, or bowel. Irreversible electro...

Type I Choledochal Cyst Complicated With Acute Hemorrhagic Pancreatitis: A Case Report
We report a patient with type I choledochal cyst(s) who had concomitant acute frank hemorrhagic pancreatitis. A 14-year-old male noted with a history of recurrent abdominal pain, fever and jaundice. Ultrasonography (US) of abdomen at the Emergency Department depicted distended gall bladder with wall thickening. Apparently dilated intrahepatic ducts (IHDs) and fusiform dilatation of the common bile duct (CBD), and mild dilatation of the pancreatic duct were also noted, suggesting a type I choledochal cyst( ). Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated calcifications in the uncinate process of the pancreas in addition to the simi...

Large Subchorionic Hematoma: Breus' Mole
Publication date: Available online 27 November 2017 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound Author(s): Ahmed Samy El-agwany A case of large subchorionic hematoma complicated by intrauterine growth retardation and oligohydramnios diagnosed at 32 weeks' gestation with twin pregnancy after ICSI is reported below. The patient was on clexane injection during pregnancy for mitral valve replacement. She was managed with tocolysis using progesterone therapy and antibiotic with followup until delivery. At 34 weeks, a male baby weighing was delivered without complication by caesarean section because of single fetal demise of twin pr...

A Standardized Ultrasound Scoring System for Preoperative Prediction of Difficult Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
Conclusion This indigenous scoring system is effective in predicting conversion risk of LC to OC. Patients having high risk may be informed and scheduled appropriately and decision to convert to OC in case of anticipated difficulty may be taken earlier. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasound)

Prenatal diagnosis of persistent left superior vena cava is associated with coarctation of the aorta – A case report
Publication date: Available online 10 October 2017 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound Author(s): Tzu-Ming Wen, Yi-Ling Huang, Pei-Chen Wu, Yi-Ying Li, Ming-Ren Chen, Tung-Yao Chang A singleton pregnant woman was found to have persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) of the fetus at 22 weeks by ultrasound. Follow-up scans revealed PLSVC, dilated coronary sinus, dominant right heart, some pericardial effusion, and hypertrophy of the right ventricular wall. The woman had an abdominal delivery at 34 weeks due to rupture of membranes. The baby was found to have coarctation of the aorta postnatally and had aortic rec...

Thrombin Injection to Treat an Iatrogenic Internal Mammary Artery Pseudoaneurysm
Publication date: September 2017 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound, Volume 25, Issue 3 Author(s): Jamal Jefferson, Zachary Nuffer, Devang Butani A 71-year-old female presented to the emergency room eight weeks status post open heart surgery for aortic valve replacement with right-sided chest wall pain and swelling. Computed tomographic (CT) angiography demonstrated a hyperattenuating structure arising from the right internal mammary artery surrounded by a heterogeneously-attenuating fluid collection in the anterior right chest wall, compatible with a right internal mammary artery pseudoaneurysm with surrounding che...

Early Detection of Left Ventricular Diverticulum by Transthoracic Echocardiography
Publication date: Available online 8 September 2017 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound Author(s): Chia-Hung Yang, Victor Chien-Chia Wu, Kuo-Chun Hung, Fen-Chiung Lin Left ventricular diverticulum is a very rare entity to be found in adults. Noninvasive echocardiography can offer useful information prior to contrast-enhanced computer tomography or invasive angiography. We evaluated a patient with left ventricular apical diverticulum but complained no symptoms. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated a outpouching at left ventricle apex. A 640-slice computed tomography later confirmed the left ventricular diverti...

A Systematic Evaluation of Ultrasound-based Fetal Weight Estimation Models on Indian Population
Conclusion We found that the existing fetal weight estimation models have high systematic and random errors on Indian population, with a general tendency of overestimation of fetal weight in the LBW category and underestimation in the HBW category. We also observed that these models have a limited ability to predict babies at a risk of either low or high birth weight. It is recommended that the clinicians should consider all these factors, while interpreting estimated weight given by the existing models. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasound)

Intrapericardial Doppler Flow Signals in a Patient with Postsurgical Pericardial Effusion
Publication date: Available online 31 August 2017 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound Author(s): Luigi Mancuso, Pietro Camarda, Andrea Mancuso, Eliana Valerio, Eduardo Rebulla A 62-year-old female patient was admitted to our hospital because of a relapse of pericardial effusion complicating a recent aortic root replacement. At admission to our hospital, echocardiogram showed the reappearance of pericardial effusion and the presence of intrapericardial clots. Color Doppler and Pulsed–wave examinations showed a localized systolic flow within the pericardial space. Contrast enhanced computed tomography excluded abno...
