Toxic shock syndrome due to group A streptococcal pharyngitis and bacteremia in adults.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
This report describes a previously healthy young man with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome who presented with fatigue, high fever, and suspected extensive streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis. Treatment consisted of high-dose antibiotics followed by therapy for consumptive coagulopathy, acute renal failure, and toxic shock syndrome. An attempt at hemodialysis and hemodiafiltration was ineffective, and the patient died within 24 h of admission. The autopsy findings were compatible with the clinical diagnosis. The invasive group A streptococci isolated from the pharyngeal swab and blood cultures were identified as M1 and T1 t...

Epidemiology of diarrhea among young children: a questionnaire-based study in Taiwan.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the possible epidemiological features of acute diarrhea among children younger than 5 years in Taiwan. The children's ages and the seasonal distribution of diarrhea coincided with the pattern of rotavirus gastroenteritis seen in hospital-based studies. Since 1985, the frequency of diarrhea has reduced, and the peak age of diarrhea is older. PMID: 19812861 [PubMed - in process]

CONCLUSIONS: Among HIV-infected patients, smoking was the only factor significantly associated with a higher prevalence of upper airway colonization by S. pneumoniae. As previous receipt of 23-valent polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine was not associated with a lower prevalence of S. pneumoniae colonization, a better vaccination strategy, in addition to smoking cessation, may be needed to reduce S. pneumoniae colonization in HIV-infected adults. Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related diseases, including cancers, low-grade neoplasia, genital warts, and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, have a substantial impact on public health. The increasing incidence of HPV infection and genital warts highlights the need for an effective strategy for the management of this disease. Immunization holds the promise of reducing the overall burden of clinical HPV-related diseases. A prophylactic quadrivalent HPV 6/11/16/18 vaccine is highly effective for reducing the risk of HPV 6-, 11-, 16-, and 18-associated cervical cancer, precancerous cervical lesions, and external genital l...

CONCLUSIONS: These data show that several key transcriptional pathways (lack of late developmental cycle completion, key cell wall components) respond similarly between the models. However, other pathways appear to differ depending on the persistence-inducing mechanism. This result suggests that Chlamydia spp. have evolved more than 1 mechanism to respond to different persistence-inducing conditions, but ultimately the pathways probably converge through a common persistence regulon. Genotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella enterica serotype Panama isolated in Taiwan.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: In view of the high rates of drug resistance to the antimicrobial agents tested, extended-spectrum cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones seem to be a better choice for treatment of systemic infection caused by Salmonella Panama. There is a major clone (P1 and its subtypes) among the Salmonella Panama isolates. Multidrug resistance was conferred by integrons or plasmids, rather than SGI1. PMID: 19255695 [PubMed - in process]

A hospital-based screening study of latex allergy and latex sensitization among medical workers in Taiwan.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: Latex allergy continues to be an important occupational allergy among medical workers in Taiwan. The addition of a routine screening examination in medical employees' health check-ups will help in the early identification of sensitized cases and facilitate preventive strategies. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that use of triple antimicrobial therapy (ceftazidime, amikacin, and sulbactam) can be a useful alternative treatment for MDR P. aeruginosa infection in certain circumstances. PMID: 19255693 [PubMed - in process]

Pyogenic liver abscess: clinical profile, microbiological characteristics, and management in a Hong Kong hospital.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSION: Although advances in imaging and therapeutic modalities have lead to substantial improvement of outcomes, patients with underlying malignancy and those requiring open surgery in particular are at significant risk of mortality. Delay in diagnosis can result in a fatal outcome. A high index of suspicion with prompt institution of treatment is the cornerstone of successful treatment for patients with PLA. Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in patients with and without human immunodeficiency virus infection.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSION: P. jirovecii pneumonia remains a significant problem for immunocompromised patients. The mortality rate for patients without HIV infection was high (50%). Greater alertness with regard to early detection of P. jirovecii in HIV-negative immunosuppressed patients with the application of nested PCR may improve the clinical management and outcome. Phenotypic and molecular identification of lactobacilli isolated from vaginal secretions.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSION: This is the first polyphasic taxonomy study on vaginal lactobacilli from Bulgarian women of reproductive age. These data add to the limited information existing in Bulgaria on the true identity of Lactobacillus spp. in the vaginal microbiota. PMID: 19255690 [PubMed - in process]
