Treatment Prices at the Point of Care in a Clinical Oncology Service: Pilot Project [QUALITY IN ACTION]
Conclusion: The pilot was feasible, built capacity to locate price data, and did not adversely affect staff workload. It addressed a clear need and demonstrated high potential overall value, especially with its protocol-based format. The resource’s lack of personalized estimates of out-of-pocket charges was the biggest gap reported. (Source: Journal of Oncology Practice)

Electronic Intervention to Improve Structured Cancer Stage Data Capture [QUALITY IN ACTION]
Conclusion: Electronic decision support improves the rate of structured cancer staging at our institution. The staging rates between 56% and 60% for the 5- to 8-month and 9- to 12-month periods likely reflect accurate postintervention staging rates, whereas the initial 115% rate for 1 to 4 months is inflated by providers staging cancers diagnosed before the BPA. Public Reporting of Hospital-Level Cancer Surgical Volumes in California: An Opportunity to Inform Decision Making and Improve Quality [ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTIONS]
Conclusion: There is clear potential for more readily available information about hospital volumes to help patient, providers, and payers choose cancer surgery hospitals. Our successful public reporting of hospital volumes in California represents an important first step toward making publicly available even more provider-specific data regarding cancer care quality, costs, and outcomes, so those data can inform decision-making and encourage quality improvement. Ovarian Sex Cord-Stromal Tumors [Clinical Reviews]
Ovarian sex cord-stromal tumors are clinically significant heterogeneous tumors that include several pathologic types. These tumors are often found in adolescents and young adults and can present with hormonal manifestations as well as signs and symptoms of a pelvic mass. Serum tumor markers may assist in preoperative diagnosis and surveillance. Several subtypes are associated with genetic predisposition, including those observed in patients with Peutz-Jegher syndrome. Recent studies have elucidated the relationship between Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors and DICER1 mutations. When classified as International Federation of Gyne...

Management of Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma Using Cytoreductive Surgery and Perioperative Chemotherapy [Clinical Reviews]
Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare disease, with approximately 800 new patients per year in the United States. Its natural history is defined by progression restricted to the peritoneal space. In the past, patients with this disease had a limited lifespan of approximately 1 year. Numerous single-institution studies as well as a systematic review have reported median survival of 3 to 5 years with a combination of cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic perioperative chemotherapy. These markedly improved survival statistics were achieved in experienced centers with 1% mortality and 20% morbidity rates. Data have show...

Preparing for Value-Based Payment: A Stepwise Approach for Cancer Centers [ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTIONS]
Most cancer centers are ill-equipped to pursue value-based payment (VBP) because of limited information on their population’s cost of care. Herein, we outline the stepwise approach used by Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven in our pursuit of better value care. First, we addressed institutional barriers. A move toward value required demonstration to Yale-New Haven Health System leadership that OCM would improve patient care, fund new infrastructure, and provide the opportunity to gain experience with VBP without a major threat to the financial stability of the health system. We evaluated patterns of care and fou...
