The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) is committed to promoting healthy eating and active lifestyles for children and families. The problem of childhood overweight and obesity is epidemic, leading to related physical and psychological co-morbidities, some of which include cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and mental health disorders (). Greetings from your President. As we prepare for the coming holiday season, a traditional time to celebrate giving and caring, it is appropriate that we contemplate the nature of our care. Nurses are instantly recognized as quality caregivers. Even the name of our profession promises we care. , an early advanced practice nursing leader, articulated the dichotomous nature of caring, describing it as both an art and a science. Artists do not need to defend their art; they simply display it. Scientists, however, need to show the evidence. Historically, nursing has struggled with the challenge of finding that evidence and docu...

Okay, I will admit it: I am a collector—mostly of children's books. The stories by Louisa May Alcott and Laura Ingalls Wilder that I grew up with often seem to remain fresh in my mind. When I discovered eBay (alas), I began pursuing the McGuffey readers of the 19th century, some of the Little Golden Books that are now out of print, and the Dick and Jane readers that took me right back to my elementary school where I spent some of the best years of my life. I even rediscovered the classic Nurses Who Led the Way, a glossy-covered tome (published in 1961 by the Whitman Company of Racine, Wisconsin) where I was first introd...

As I composed my second message to you, I realized it would be published in that transition time of year between late summer and early fall. In New England, where I live, this is a dynamic season of welcomed change and natural beauty. Although these changes are dramatic, they are accepted easily because they are anticipated changes that occur every year. We are prepared for them to happen. Adaptation to change does not always occur so easily. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Health Care)

Bullying continues to be a significant public health problem among children in schools and other group settings. With the expansion of online and electronic communication among school-aged and teen-aged children, bullying is no longer limited to the schoolyard. Cyberbullies may harass, tease, disrespect, or exclude fellow classmates by sending photos, text messages, e-mail, instant messages (IMs), and video through cell phones, personal digital assistants, and computers. With these multiple digital modalities, cyberbullying is a more insidious form of bullying, with messages reaching the victim any time of the day or night...

Background and Implementation: Individuals with asthma, regardless of severity, must be aware of how to self-manage symptoms. The scope of this evidence-based project includes the work processes and systems required to develop an electronic asthma action plan (AAP) tool and optimize its utilization within an electronic health record of a multi-specialty regional health system. De-identified medical record data were collected and analyzed via a one-group prospective pre-test/post-test design. Stakeholder feedback was obtained regarding ease of use, ability to access, readability, clarity, and likelihood to utilize. (Source:...

The purposes of this study are to examine: (a) the relationship between child and maternal factors and family functioning for technology-dependent children and their families; and (b) whether there are differences in outcomes (e.g., family functioning, normalization, and depressive symptoms) based on the child's level of technology (i.e., mechanical ventilation, intravenous nutrition/medication, and respiratory/nutritional support).
