Developing and leading a sustainable organization for early career acute care surgeons: Lessons from the inaugural American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Associate Member Council
The associate membership of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) was established in 2019 to create a defined but incorporated entity within the larger AAST for the next generation of acute care surgeons. The Associate Member Council (AMC) was subsequently established in 2020 to provide the new AM with an elected group of leaders who would represent them within the AAST. In its inaugural year, this cohort of junior faculty and surgical trainees had developed for the AM a set of bylaws, a mission statement, a strategic vision, and a succession plan. The experience of the AAST AMC is exemplary of what can...

Ventilator-associated pneumonia and intubation location in adults with traumatic injuries: Systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION
Traumatically injured patients who are intubated in the prehospital setting have a similar risk of developing VAP compared with those that are intubated in the hospital setting.

Performance of quick sequential organ failure assessment and modified age disease adjusted qadSOFA for the prediction of outcomes in emergency general surgery patients
BACKGROUND
Sepsis is a highly prevalent condition and is associated with a reported in-hospital mortality rate up to 40% in patients with abdominal sepsis requiring emergency general surgery (EGS). The quick sequential organ failure assessment score (qSOFA) has not been studied for EGS patients.
METHODS
Retrospective cohort study in adult patients undergoing abdominal EGS at a university tertiary care center from 2016 to 2018. The primary outcome was mortality. The effect of clinical variables on outcomes was assessed in univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses. Based on these results, the qSOF...

Tracheostomy decreases continuous analgesia and sedation requirements
CONCLUSION
Tracheostomy allows for a rapid and significant reduction in intravenous sedation and analgesia medication utilization. Posttracheostomy sedation can transition to intermittent enteral medications, potentially contributing to the observed improvements in postoperative mental status and agitation.

Mortality of adolescents with isolated traumatic brain injury does not vary with type of level I trauma center
BACKGROUND
Pediatric patients with isolated severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) treated at pediatric trauma centers (PTCs) have lower mortality than those treated at adult trauma centers (ATCs) or mixed trauma centers (MTCs). The primary objective of this study was to determine if adolescent patients (15–17 years) with isolated severe TBI also benefited from treatment at PTCs.
METHODS
This was a cross-sectional analysis using a national sample of adolescent trauma patients obtained from the American College of Surgeons' Trauma Quality Program Participant Use Files for 2013 to 2017 (n = 3,524). Mortality, the p...
