Stability/Change of DSM Diagnoses among Children and Adolescents Assessed at a University Hospital: A Cross-sectional Cohort Study.

CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study show poor stability for all diagnoses, however the trend seemed to follow that reported in previous literature where moods disorders and schizophrenia showed more stability than other diagnoses. Explanations are provided for the results. A well-designed prospective longitudinal study utilizing structured diagnostic interviews to assign DSM-IV TR diagnosis from child hood to adulthood would improve the reliability of diagnoses and perhaps time for crystallization of psychopathology and clarification into more discrete diagnostic entities.

CONCLUSION: This initial reliability data supports interest in the ALS as a means to evaluate a global level of affective lability, during the euthymic phase, among francophone adolescents in an in-patient psychiatric unit. A future study with a larger sample will make it possible to confirm these initial results and examine the factorial structure of the instrument.

CONCLUSIONS: Identifying the pattern of neuropsychological deficits in children with TS on the CANTAB(R) is important for highlighting areas of deficit that can be targeted for intervention and teaching strategies. With further research, the CANTAB(R) may prove to be a useful resource in the assessment and treatment of children with TS.

CONCLUSION: While co-morbid ID and ASD generally imply a poor outcome, for children and youth with ASD and normal range IQ, adult functioning is more variable and difficult to predict. Because of delays in ongoing social development, some of these individuals may attain educational, independent living and relationship goals, but reach them a decade or more later than typical for the general population.

DISCUSSION: BPNOS is a serious illness the diagnostic guidelines for which are still debatable. Until further clarification of this diagnosis, the COBY definitions for BPNOS can be used in a clinic. The use of stringent criteria for diagnosing the bipolar spectrum disorders allows for careful differential diagnoses of psychiatric illnesses.

CONCLUSION: Most of the 34 patients traced seemed to have satisfactory personal and professional lives, in contrast to the high level of repeated suicide attempts. Repeated suicide attempts during adolescence appear to be one of the major risk factors in attempting suicide again within 10 years. This confirms the importance of preventive measures after a first suicide attempt.
