Reconsideration of urine culture for the diagnosis of acute pyelonephritis in children: a new challenging method for diagnosing acute pyelonephritis.
Authors: Lee JH, Rhie S Abstract Acute pyelonephritis (APN) should be detected and treated as soon as possible to reduce the risk of the development of acquired renal scarring. However, in the medical field, urine culture results are not available or considered when the prompt discrimination of APN is necessary and empirical treatment is started. Furthermore, urine culture cannot discriminate APN among children with febrile urinary tract infection (UTI) (pyelitis, lower UTI with other fever focus). Therefore, the usefulness of urine culture for diagnostic purposes is small and the sampling procedure is inv...

Hypoxia-inducible factor: role in cell survival in superoxide dismutase overexpressing mice after neonatal hypoxia-ischemia.
CONCLUSION: HIF-1α and HIF-2α may promote cell survival in neonatal HI in a cell-specific and regional fashion. Our findings suggest that early HIF-2α upregulation precedes apoptotic cell death and limits necrotic cell death. However, the influence of SOD was not clarified; it remains an intriguing factor in neonatal HI. PMID: 31870086 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Lipid accumulation product is a predictor of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in childhood obesity.
CONCLUSION: LAP is a powerful and easy tool to predict NAFLD in childhood. If LAP is ≥42.7, NAFLD should be suspected. This is the first study to assess LAP diagnostic accuracy for childhood obesity. PMID: 31870087 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Evaluation of drug interventions for the treatment of sleep disorders in children with autism spectrum disorders: a systematic review.
Authors: Jenabi E, Ataei S, Bashirian S Abstract A structured review study of drug interventions on sleep disorders in patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has not been published to date. This systematic review aimed to investigate drug interventions for the treatment of sleep disorders in children with ASD. The Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases were searched until March 2019. Study quality was assessed using the Delphi checklist. Due to the heterogeneity of the findings, a meta-analysis was not possible. Drug interventions for the treatment of sleep disorders in patients with ASD inclu...

Clinical manifestations of BK virus infection in pediatric kidney transplant patients.
CONCLUSION: BKV infection is common in children with kidney transplantation and might not have affected short-term renal function in our patient sample due to early immunosuppressant reduction at the time of BKV detection. PMID: 31760721 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Pediatrics)

Assessment of interhospital transport care in pediatric patients.
Conclusion: We report an incidence of adverse events occurring during transport of critical ill pediatric patient of 22%. Most of the events were physiologic deterioration. The escort personal maybe the key person to prevent and appropriately monitor any complication during the transport. Genetic classification and confirmation of inherited platelet disorders and current status in Korea.
Authors: Shim YJ Abstract Inherited platelet disorders (IPDs), which manifest as primary hemostasis defects, often underlie abnormal bleeding and a family history of thrombocytopenia, bone marrow failure, hematologic malignancies, undefined mucocutaneous bleeding disorder, or congenital bony defects. A wide heterogeneity in IPD types, in regard to the presence or absence of thrombocytopenia, platelet dysfunction, bone marrow failure, and dysmegakaryopoiesis, is observed in patients. The individual processes involved in platelet production and hemostasis are genetically controlled: to date, mutations more t...

Placental Histopathology in Late Preterm infants: Clinical Implications.
Conclusion: Placental infection does not predispose to late preterm birth. There is a non-significant predominance of vascular anomalies in late preterm placentas. Higher maternal age, magnesium sulfate therapy and maternal hypertension are clinical risk factors for late preterm labor. Autoimmune Encephalitis and Epilepsy: Evolving Definition and Clinical Spectrum.
Authors: Seo JH, Lee YJ, Lee KH, Gireesh E, Skinner H, Westerveld M Abstract Advances in autoimmune encephalitis studies in the past 10 years have headed to the identification of new syndromes and biomarkers that have transformed the diagnostic approach to the disorder. The disorder or syndrome has been linked to a wide variety of pathologic processes associated with the neural-specific autoantibodies targeting both intracellular and plasma membrane antigens. However, current criteria for autoimmune encephalitis are very dependent on antibody testing and response to immunotherapy, which might delay the dia...
