[Intrastromal femtosecond laser-based presbyopia correction.]
Abstract The surgical correction of presbyopia is gaining more and more popularity in the field of refractive surgery. Besides intraocular treatment with multifocal or accommodative intraocular lenses more and more corneal laser approaches are being established. These are performed either with the Excimer laser as laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) or the femtosecond laser. The femtosecond laser treatment is done purely intrastromally without dissection of the epithelium and is characterized by an extremely low risk of infection and inflammation. The procedure leads to a central corneal steepening with more prola...

Technology for imaging can be for treatment too, but where’s the line between them?
On any given day thousands of patients around the world—children and adults—will get an x-ray. What they probably won’t think about while sitting on the table wearing one of those lead aprons, though, is how at that moment the same technology being used to take a picture of their arm or leg or skull is also helping an oncologist treat a cancer patient’s tumor. X-rays—rather, the radiation used to take an x-ray—are just one example of how many of the energies used to take pictures of the body can also have direct treatment applications. Sometimes the same radiation that takes an x-ray picture is used to ...

Comparison of visual acuity, higher-order aberrations and corneal asphericity after refractive lenticule extraction and wavefront-guided laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis for myopia.
CONCLUSIONS: In myopic eyes, FLEx induces significantly fewer ocular fourth-order aberrations than wfg-LASIK, possibly because it causes less oblation in the corneal shape, but there was no statistically significant difference in visual acuity or in the induction of third-order aberrations and total HOAs. It is suggested that FLEx is essentially equivalent to wfg-LASIK in terms of visual acuity and total HOA induction, although the characteristics of HOA induction are different. January consultation #2
Corneal ectasia is the most sight-threatening complication that can occur after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Thus, the main concern of refractive surgeons is to detect patients at risk for post-LASIK corneal ectasia. Keratoconus is a progressive, noninflammatory, localized thinning and elevation of the cornea that stabilizes after the age of 35 to 40 years. The diagnosis of keratoconus at advanced stages is made on the basis of a combination of clinical and corneal topographic signs. Corneas that share similarities with ectatic corneas (keratoconus or pellucid marginal corneal degeneration) are at higher risk for ...

Predictable visual outcomes with accelerated corneal cross-linking concurrent with laser in situ keratomileusis
In their article reporting the results of a pilot study assessing the use of accelerated corneal crosslinking (CXL) concurrent with laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), Celik et al. demonstrated that the addition of accelerated CXL to the LASIK procedure did not appear to affect LASIK algorithms. We have also incorporated accelerated CXL into LASIK procedures and have similarly demonstrated predictable visual and refractive outcomes with this combined method. Prevention of ectasia for laser in situ keratomileusis with simultaneous corneal crosslinking
In a prospective pilot interventional case series, Celik et al. performed simultaneous corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) to prevent ectasia and found no occurrence of significant refractive change or side effects during the 1-year follow-up. The authors conclude that this procedure appears to be a promising modality for future applications to prevent corneal ectasia after LASIK treatment. Ectopic Epithelial Implants following Surface Ablation of the Cornea [Cornea]
Conclusions. Ectopic epithelia are a known complication of LASIK and LASIK-like procedures. The data presented here indicate that ectopic epithelia are also a complication of surface ablation techniques. The knowledge that these complications are present following surface ablations provides a new understanding of the biological response to surface ablation techniques and suggests new avenues of study to improve clinical outcomes of those for whom LASIK-based techniques are not an option. Implantation of intrastromal corneal ring segments for post-keratoplasty astigmatism
In a recent retrospective study, Coscarelli et al. evaluated the clinical outcomes of intrastromal corneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation in patients with astigmatism after penetrating keratoplasty (PKP). They reported a statistically significant improvement in the mean corrected distance visual acuity, as well as a statisticaly significant reduction in the mean spherical equivalent, mean spherical refractive error, mean maximum and minimun keratometry values, and mean topographic astigmatism. Based on these results, they suggest that ICRS implantation may offer a useful alternative to the standard refractive procedures...

Thulium | video | @GrrlScientist
What do dental x-rays, YAG and Tim have in common? This week's element is thulium, a lanthanide that has the symbol, Tm, and the atomic number, 69. It is very rare, being only slightly more common on Earth than promethium. Like the other lanthanides, thulium is never found in its pure form in nature. Of all the lanthanides, thulium is the most forgotten (by me), since I always forget I've ever heard of this one except when I see its symbol, Tm, which my mind always transliterates as "Tim". So let me tell you more about this lanthanide known as thulium and with the nickname "Tim".As you can see in the above image, pure thuli...
