Sharon talked about two important components of "Web 2.0": social networking and web services. She briefly demonstrated a few examples to get you started as you think about how you can incorporate Web 2.0 into your library. Betsy reviewed and compared the region's libraries that were captured in Network Data Inventory reports of 2002 and 2005, and asked how the MCR can meet your needs. [SD]

NLM Director Receives Knowledge Trust Honor

NLM Director, Dr. Donald A. B. Lindberg, was one of five trailblazers in information and library science and information technology who were honored in the first Knowledge Trust Honors ceremony. The awards were made by the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Lindberg received the Wilson Prize for Lifetime Achievement, for his accomplishments in knowledge exploration, compilation and stewardship in service to society. 2007 MeSH Browser Debuts

Ring in the New Year with the 2007 MeSH Browser. Introduced in 1960, The MeSH Browser is an online vocabulary look-up aid available for use with MeSH(Medical Subject Headings). It is designed to help quickly locate descriptors of possible interest and to show the hierarchy in which descriptors of interest appear. Virtually complete MeSH records are available, including the scope notes, annotations, entry vocabulary, history notes, allowable qualifiers, etc. There are nearly 23,000 descriptors in MeSH. In addition to these headings, there are more than 151,000 headings called Supplementary Concept Records.[da]

Heads up for NLM Year End Processing

Following annual year-end processing two changes will occur. All of the MeSH Category V terms will be identified as Publication Type (PT) in the MEDLINE citations and the NLM Catalog records instead of MeSH. Examples of Category V terms are "Comparative Study" and "Research Support".
Approximately 86% of the OLDMEDLINE citations have had all of their keywords mapped to current MeSH. This means their MeSH headings will be maintained with the upcoming 2007 version of MeSH. As a part of the 2006 MEDLINE year-end processing activities, these records will be designated as MEDLINE records.

NLM Assistant Director Policy Development Appointed

NLM Director Donald A.B. Lindberg, M.D. has announced the appointment of Mr. Jerry Sheehan as NLM Assistant Director for Policy Development. Mr. Sheehan comes to NLM from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, where he served as Principal Administrator and Senior Economist. Prior to OECD, Mr. Sheehan held positions in the National Research Council and in the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment. The Rural Assistance Center (RAC), a national resource for rural health and human services information, has launched State Resources on its Web site allowing easy access to continuously updated demographics and statistics, documents and resources, contacts and success stories for all 50 states. RAC's other web-based services, available at www.raconline.org, include an online clearinghouse of news, documents, maps, and success stories; a calendar of events; a directory of rural contacts and organizations; and a searchable database of funding opportunities.[da]
