Fresh medical graduates and being a life insurance sales person
The long wait for a houseman placing after graduating from medical school in Malaysia is now the new normal, there being thousands of graduates and the limited positions made available by the Government. After spending 5 years in medical school (and in the case of private medical school, spending hundreds of thousands of ringgit in fees) being jobless is quite painful I can imagine. We have fresh medical graduates seeking temporary jobs as a Barista, Grab driver etc. Recently there was a query from a fresh medical graduate about whether becoming a life insurance agent would be affect her career and if indeed there was a co...

The Ivermectin and Covid-19 conundrum
In conclusion, the above implications are basically saying there is lack of good evidence for IVM in Covid-19. There is evidence also that IVM does not work for Covid-19. See this recent paper, highlighted by a Dobber: Ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials This analysis concluded “…in comparison to SOC or placebo, IVM did not reduce all-cause mortality, length of stay, respiratory viral clearance, adverse events and serious adverse events in RCTs of patients with mild to moderate COVID-19. We did not find data about IVM effects on clinica...

Attention doctors: How to apply for your APC Online
The APC or Annual Practicing Certificate is a mandatory legal requirement for practicing doctors and has to be renewed every year. This year doctors have to apply Online for their APC and some doctors have yet to come to grips with the new process. We have produced a short video guide to aid doctors. Firstly, there is already a Manual for Renewal of the APC (it was originally available in the Merits homepage but has been removed; perhaps the manual is in the process of being revised). You can access it here for the time being but bear in mind things might change in the future. As per the current steps that we are aware of,...

Calling all doctors and nurses – get Locum Apps now!
Advertorial The time for slow and tedious methods of getting in touch with hospitals and clinics for locum jobs is now over! Locum Apps was developed after months of research from doctors and nurses, telling us about their struggles in booking jobs consistently, having to submit their APC and MMC details over and over again to different hospitals and clinics which don’t always reply and importantly, sometimes having to go to unsafe location for a job. We believed things should be more transparent. With Locum Apps, healthcare staff can book locum jobs faster, easier and safer. The best part? Every hospital or clinic regi...

Feedback: How to get free medical advice
Winston writes in: I wonder whether you have come across a website called “Tabadoc”. It was a free website that allowed anyone to write in to obtain answers to medical problems. And they are answered by doctors from GPs to Specialists in all fields. It was very popular until it suddenly disappeared! Would your website provide this service? It will be much appreciated by the public. Hello again, Winston. Thanks for writing in. We are not aware of Tabadoc or know what happened to it. I guess like the majority of Malaysians we want everything to be free and not have to pay for it, including medical advice. In orde...

Guidelines on Covid-19 Management in Malaysia
We’re still getting questions from doctors in our DOBBS forums about handling suspected COVID-19 cases. I think the concern is pertinent as the number of cases continues to increase worldwide and we need to prepare for the very real possibility of a pandemic. In the KKM/MOH website, the current guidelines can be viewed here but the sections are in multiple PDFs. Here is the full PDF of the Guidelines on Covid-19 Management in Malaysia v 4/2020 which was shared in DOBBS. Doctors are invited to join DOBBS, our pioneer and largest online platform for Malaysian doctors with over 16,000 participants. Get the pulse and l...

Professional Indemnity is compulsory by law for doctors but there is a glitch in the system
Ever since the regulations for the Medical Act 1971 were updated in 2017, 2 important things affected doctors: 1) CPD became compulsory and doctors have to attain at least 20 CPD points (according to MMC guidelines). This was enforced in 2019’s application for the 2020 APC. 2) Professional Indemnity (PI) or malpractice insurance also became compulsory – this applies to ALL doctors who wish to have an APC, be they government doctors or those in private practice. Here’s a screenshot of the Regulations 2017 amendment for your reference: While PI is a requirement by law, it was not enforced in 2019 when doc...

How to avoid getting the novel Coronavirus infection
(image from The Star) This simple advice from the BC Centre for Disease Control is the most precise and easy to follow: Take similar precautions to those of the common cold or flu. Practice good hand hygiene – frequently wash hands well with plain soap and especially after coughing, sneezing and before preparing foods/eating. Cough/sneeze into arm/elbow (rather than hands). Do not share food, drinks, utensils, etc. As much as possible, avoid interactions with people who are ill. If you are sick yourself, stay away from others. Masks Masks should be used by sick people to prevent others from becoming infected. A mask will...
