However, little is known about the first observations that finally led to the widespread use of this technique. Abstract  200 years ago, on August 5, 1802, Niels Henrik Abel was born on Finnøy near Stavanger on the Norwegian west coast. During a short life span, Abel contributed to a deep transition in mathematics in which concepts replaced formulae as the basic objects of mathematics. Abstract  Christoph Jetzler (1734–1791), a Swiss furrier and amateur mathematician from Schaffhausen, came to Berlin in spring 1763, only to ask a favour of Leonhard Euler, whom he had never met before. He wanted to copy the manuscript of Euler’s Institutiones Calculi Integralis (integral calculus), which had not appeared in print yet.
