A Concept Development for the Symptom Science Model 2.0
Discussion There have been several calls to revise the original SSM from the nursing scientific community to expand its utility to other healthcare settings. Incorporating three additional concept elements can facilitate a broader variety of translational nursing research symptom science collaborations and applications, support additional scientific domains for symptom science activities, and produce more translatable symptom science to a wider audience of nursing research scholars and stakeholders during recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The revised SSM 2.0 with newly incorporated social determinants of health, pat...

A Protocol to Assess Adult Outcomes at 30 Years Following Preterm Birth
Discussion After an 11-month COVID-19 pause, participant response has been strong. As of May 2022, 75 participants have completed the full protocol, and 99 have consented to participate. When socioeconomic risk is controlled, we hypothesize that life course trajectories in physical and psychological health, adaptive function, and executive function will differ between term and preterm neonatal morbidity groups. AL will vary across groups and contribute to outcomes. We expect proximal protection and resilience to mediate the cumulative medical and socioeconomic risk and AL. Epigenome-wide DNA methylation, with estimates...

Study Protocol: Sleep Effects on Poststroke Rehabilitation Study
Discussion The results of this study will contribute to understanding the complex interplay between non-OSA sleep disorders and poststroke rehabilitation; they provide insight regarding barriers to participation in the community and return to normal activities after stroke. Such results could lead to strategies for developing new stroke recovery interventions. (Source: Nursing Research)

Understanding and Optimizing Family Caregiver Participation in Dyadic Research
Discussion Instruments assessing dyad-level information could aid researchers in deploying resources at recruitment, as well as in adjusting results for data that could bias results and conclusions. Our findings support the importance of considering the recruitment strategy as well as dyadic care type as part of the recruitment process. (Source: Nursing Research)

Polychoric Correlation With Ordinal Data in Nursing Research
Discussion A polychoric correlation suggests stronger associations, and consequently, the approach can be more credible with an ordinal Likert scale than Pearson correlations. Hence, polychoric confirmatory factor analysis can address a larger proportion of variance. In nursing research, polychoric confirmatory factor analysis can confidently be utilized when conducting confirmatory factor analysis of ordinal variables in Likert scales. Furthermore, when a Pearson confirmatory factor analysis is used for ordinal Likert scales, the researcher should carefully evaluate the difference between the two approaches and justif...

Treatment Fidelity in a Randomized Controlled Trial of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia in Heart Failure
We describe strategies to ensure treatment fidelity in study design, provider training, and treatment delivery. We measured treatment receipt (observation and self-report) and enactment of CBT-I strategies (self-report and actigraphy). We used the Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes About Sleep Scale and the Sleep Disturbance Questionnaire to indicate sleep-related beliefs and cognitions. We computed descriptive statistics for demographic characteristics, treatment receipt, and enactment variables. We compared baseline and post-intervention dichotomous sleep behaviors using the two-sided Wilcoxon rank-sum test. We calculat...

Identification to Intervention: A Perspective From Parents of Children With Cerebral Palsy
The objectives of this study were to explore and describe the experiences of parents of children with CP, including their journey to diagnosis, access to services and resources, and what they would want other parents or healthcare providers to know and understand about their experiences. Methods Using a qualitative descriptive design, semistructured interviews were conducted from January 2021 to April 2021. A purposive sampling method with a snowball effect was used to recruit parents through therapists, a children’s hospital, a pediatric rehabilitation center, and social media CP support groups. An inductive appr...

Nurse-Reported Staffing Guidelines and Exclusive Breast Milk Feeding
This study provides evidence that hospitals’ nurse-reported compliance with Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses staffing guidelines predicts hospital-exclusive breast milk feeding rates and that the rates are a nurse-sensitive outcome. (Source: Nursing Research)

Experiences of U.S. Nurses Compared With Nonnurses in the First Year of COVID-19: Findings From a National Registry
Discussion Differences were identified between nurses and nonnurse HCWs in access to PPE, physical and mental well-being measures, and likelihood of reporting exposure and infection. Among nurses, testing and infection differed based on race and ethnicity, and type of work setting. Our findings suggest further research and policy are needed to elucidate and address social and occupational disparities. (Source: Nursing Research)

Patient-Reported Outcomes for Function and Pain in Total Knee Arthroplasty Patients
This study included 201 patients. Outcomes were changes between baseline and follow-up in the functional and pain subcomponents of the Oxford Knee Score. Both classification and regression modeling were applied. Twenty-one predictors were included. Tenfold cross-validation was used, and the regression models were evaluated based on root-mean-square error, mean absolute error, and coefficient of determination. Classification models were evaluated based on the area under the receiver operating curve, sensitivity, and specificity. Results In classification modeling, random forest and stochastic gradient boosting provid...

Study Protocol to Evaluate Influences of Stress and Inflammation on Mucositis in Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer
This study is also an important translational science study essential in bringing data from laboratory studies to the clinical arena. The study may also be important to implementation science because assessing the ability of critically ill individuals to participate in low-burden clinical studies may yield essential findings to improve care delivery. Discussion Findings from this work will identify potentially modifiable factors that may be manipulated to minimize chemotherapy toxicities and lead to improved survival. Data from this study will inform larger research endeavors to better understand symptom development...
