General practitioner and paediatrician self-reported capacity for the diagnosis and management of childhood and adolescent overweight and obesity

Conclusions: The findings suggest that many doctors may benefit from increased training and a health system that better remunerates them for the time investment needed to provide management consistent with best practice. Reorientation of local public sector nutrition services may also provide them with better support when managing overweight and obese paediatric clients. Future research should examine the actual practices of doctors and how public sector dietitians can best communicate and interact with them to facilitate effective management of these patients. Structural change in Medicare funding: Impact on the dietetics workforce

Conclusions: Medicare funding for allied health has provided structural change and presents an opportunity for growth in the private sector of dietetics. While the number and full-time equivalents of private practice dietitians increased since 2004, the anticipated sharp increase relative to other work areas was not seen. Dietetics had a high uptake of Medicare consultations per provider and consultations increased each year; however, the declining share of total consultations demonstrates that dietitians are not using the opportunity presented by Medicare to the same degree as some allied health professions. How many Australian deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided by a small reduction in population cholesterol levels?

Conclusions: A small leftward shift in the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol distribution of the adult Australian population has the potential to save about 3000 lives from coronary heart disease and stroke annually. Achieving this goal will require the active participation of key public health, food industry and government stakeholders. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Conclusions: The present study highlights many of the limitations in current online programs/websites and interventions targeting preschool children. We have attempted to address these in the design and development of the Time2bHealthy Program. The present study describes the first step in the development of a novel and innovative initiative that has the potential to make a contribution to long-term health of preschool children and their families. Conclusion: Further research is required to examine the association between shifting preferences in body ideals and obesity among traditional communities, such as sub-Saharan African migrants. The understanding of how changes in body image perceptions may influence eating and exercise behaviours among sub-Saharan African migrants would assist in the development of obesity-related preventive interventional programs for this at-risk population. Glycaemic index and glycaemic load intake patterns in older Australian women

Conclusions: In this population, dietary glycaemic load decreased with increasing age; however, this was likely to be a result of higher energy intakes in younger women. Focus on careful selection of lower-glycaemic-index items within bread and breakfast cereal food groups would be an effective strategy for decreasing dietary glycaemic load in this population of older women. Conclusions: Analysis of learning styles can assist curriculum change towards teaching strategies that suit students. Teaching and learning activities for dietetics students should be developed to strengthen reflective and emotional learning and to develop students' ability to appreciate different points of view. The finding that learning styles changed with year level requires confirmation via cohort studies. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Conclusions: This research suggests that less healthy beverages are discounted more frequently and to a larger extent than healthier beverages, but a nationwide study is required to confirm this. It appears likely that supermarkets could play a role in promoting healthy beverage choice if they refrain from discounting amber and red products. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)
