Clinical Pathologic Conference Case 1: A unilocular radiolucency of the right mandible
An 18-year-old black male presented to the oral surgery resident clinic for evaluation of a radiolucent lesion of the right posterior mandible detected on routine panoramic imaging at a local pediatric dental clinic. The patient was otherwise healthy with no significant past medical or social history. The patient's mother vaguely recalled that “something” was seen several years ago on a radiograph of the area, but a search of dental records found no images for comparison. On extraoral exam, the patient appeared symmetric without evidence of facial fullness or swelling. A 52-year-old male presented to his oral surgeon for evaluation of a right palatal mass that had been present for one year. Clinical symptoms included swelling, and no pain was reported. His past medical history was non-contributory. Intraoral examination revealed a smooth-surfaced mass with a slightly bluish hue, measuring approximately 3.0 cm in its greatest dimension (Figure 1). No surface ulceration was observed. Radiographic evaluation showed erosion of the nasal floor and maxillary sinus in the corresponding area. A nine-year-old male presented to his dentist with the chief complaint that he had noticed “a bump in his mouth a few weeks ago.” The patient reported no pain with eating. His medical history was unremarkable, except for a broken arm a few years prior. The patient is adopted and the family has no medical records from his birth. Extra-oral exam revealed no diagnostic abnormalities and the patient was awake, alert and comfortable with the examination. Upon intraoral physical exam, an expansile fullness of the anterior maxilla was noted (Figure 1). (Source: Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology, and Endodontics)

Clinical Pathologic Conference Case #6: Oral and Cutaneous Findings in a 14-year-old Female
A 14-year-old female with a history of Kawasaki disease was referred to a university oral medicine clinic by her orthodontist due to swollen, hemorrhagic gingiva and tooth mobility. Scurvy was suspected by the patient's nurse practitioner and confirmed by a measure of ascorbic acid in plasma of less than 5 μmol per liter (0.1 mg per deciliter; reference range, 23 to 114 μmol per liter [0.4 to 2.0 mg per deciliter]). Laboratory testing also revealed vitamin D deficiency with a measured 25-hydroxyvitamin D level of less than 23.3 ng per milliliter (50 nmol per liter; reference range 32.0-100.0 ng per milliliter). Association between coca chewing (Erythroxylum coca) habit and oral squamous cell carcinoma. A case-control study from Argentina
Previous isolated reports have hypothesized that chewing coca leaves, a pre-Columbian tradition found in certain regions of South America, may be associated with the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Coca chewing (CC) is a habit that shares many characteristics with the well-known practice of betel chewing observed in Asia. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between CC and OSCC among patients who attended the Se ñor del Milagro Hospital in Salta, Argentina. Is there a superiority between arthrocentesis and stabilizing occlusal splint for the treatment of anterior disc displacement with reduction and intermittent block and anterior disc displacement without reduction in tmj? - randomized clinical trial
Anterior displacement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc is a disorder in which the articular disc is dislocated from its correct position relative to the mandibular condyle and mandibular fossa. Traditionally, the initial treatment of disc displacements involves various conservative measures, including the use of a stabilizing interocclusal plate. However, in cases where there is associated limited mouth opening, as in the case of anterior disc displacement with reduction (ADDwR) and intermittent block (ADDwRIB), and anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDw/oR), arthrocentesis has been suggested as anothe...
