Summary Scoliosis is a deformity of the spine known since Hippocrates times. The value of certain methods of conservative treatment remains controversial. Some of them have only a psychological value both for the physician and his or her caregivers. Based on current literature and the Scoliosis Research Society Report of Alternative Methods of Treatment of Idiopathic Scoliosis, we describe the effectiveness of various alternative methods, such as exercise, Dobosiewicz technique, Karski method, SEAS 02, acupuncture, Alexander technique, aromatherapy, ayurveda, ASCO treatment, biofeedback, chiropractic, Yoga, Feldenkrais...

Background: Aneurysmal bone cyst was first described by Jaffe and Lichtenstein in 1942. Schajowicz in 1972 in his Histopathological Classification of Primary Bone Tumors (later modified by WHO in 1993) placed it in group IX - tumor-like lesions. Its etiology and pathogenesis is not completely clear. Aneurysmal bone cysts are usually found in older children and young adults, rarely before the age of 5 or after 30.
The aim of the study is to evaluate aneurysmal cyst treatment outcomes in patients we have treated and present diagnostic difficulties, especially considering the giant cell tumor in differential d...

Abstract Bilateral posterior fracture-dislocations of the shoulders are a rare injury that usually occurs secondary to a tonic-clonic seizure, electrocution or a high energy trauma. In this unique case, we present the first case of this injury resulting from a simple syncope in a 49 year old man with no history of epilepsy. He was fully investigated and no cause was found for his syncope. His shoulder fracture dislocations were reduced acutely and treated conservatively with full functional recovery.

Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and architectural derangements leading to an increased fracture risk. Evaluation of the quality of life of patients with osteoporosis concerns the physical, emotional, social and pain QoL domains. Quality of life can be measured to compare the effect of different treatments of osteoporosis. The as-sessment of quality of life is also useful in epidemiological studies to estimate the burden of disease and to evaluate the effectiveness of different treatments. The principal goals of health care for these patients are to maintain independence and pr...

Conclusions. 1. Comprehensive motor rehabilitation exerts an effect that potentially modifies spinal cord plasticity and may significantly supplement SCRT, leading to expected functional effects. 2. Encouraging results of animal studies cannot be directly translated into expectations regarding SCRT utility in people. 3. Ensuring a high quality of studies on SCRT efficacy and safety necessitates compliance with rigorous methodological requirements. Functional ability of the patient needs to be a significant end-point of SCRT studies.
The treatment of septic bone defects represents a significant challenge in orthopaedic surgery. Non-vascularised cancellous bone grafts are very commonly used. In contrast, thin and malleable periosteal grafts have generally only been investigated in animal models. The free corticoperiosteal flap is used only in exceptional cases in traumatology. This case report describes the treatment of an infected and non-reactive bone defect in the shaft of the tibia. This case involves a septic non-union over two years old with evidence of methicillin-resistant Staph. aureus. A vascularised corticoperiosteal flap was used to brid...

Concomitant ipsilateral shaft and femoral neck or pertrochanteric fractures are uncommon. They result from high-energy traumas and the mechanism of injury is usually complex. The proximal fracture is often not displaced and may be hardly visible on x-rays. Overlooking the proximal fracture may result in therapeutic problems. The best method of treatment is by closed stabilization of both fractures with a reconstruction nail. In our opinion, concomitant neck and femoral shaft fractures demand particular alertness in x-ray analysis, precision in fracture stabilization and usually longer patient rehabilitation.

Posterior shoulder dislocation is an extremely rare injury. A radiograph of the dislocated shoulder is generally accepted as normal owing to several traps. Therefore if the clinician is not suspicious, this injury can easily be overlooked. Most of the cases described in the literature were overlooked dislocations reported as case reports or series. We aimed to present a case of sustained posterior shoulder dislocation. The injury was initially overlooked, the patient was admitted 1 month later and treated by modified McLaughlin procedure.

CONCLUSIONS: Our results do not differ from those described in literature. A sagittal dimension over 15 mm, and an interpedicular dimension of more than 25 mm are characteristic of a normal spinal canal. The results constitute reference data for further studies concerning lumbar stenosis.

Leptin, a hormone secreted by adipose tissue, but also by several other tissues, has a dual effect on bone, acting by two independent mechanisms. As a signal molecule with growth factor characteristics, leptin is able to stimulate osteoblastic cells and to inhibit osteoclast formation and activity, thus promoting osteogenesis. However, as a molecule which stimulates sympathetic neurons in the hypothalamus, leptin indirectly inhibits bone formation. This inhibitory effect of leptin mediated by activation of sympathetic nervous system can be abrogated by application of blood pressure-reducing beta-blockers, which also in...

Conclusions 1. The HSS and ST scores exhibit high sensitivity in assessing pain, difficulty performing activities of daily living and in assessing the results of physical examination of the knee joint in patients who following knee replacement surgery. 2. The sensitivity of the HSS Knee Score may be adversely affected by assessment of instability and varus or valgus deformity of the joint due to a low variability of those parameters over time. 3. The assessment of the ability to perform activities of daily living using the two scores makes it possible to tailor exercises and adjust the rehabilitation programme to solve pat...

This paper presents a case of an unorthodox technique of screw fixation of an odontoid process fracture which consisted in simultaneous reposition of an odontoid process fracture from a posterior pharyngeal wall approach and direct screw fixation from a submandibular approach. A 53-year-old patient sustained an injury to the cervical spine. Radiographs and CT scans revealed an Anderson and D'Alonzo type II fracture of the odontoid process. No neurological deficits were found. Due to a significant degree of dislocation of the fractured fragment towards the spinal cord it was initially decided that the fragment should be...

We present a case of fatigue fracture of the femur after navigated total knee arthroplasty with the Orthopilot system. A 60-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis (T-score = -3.1) reported increasing pain of the thigh 8 weeks after the surgery. A fatigue fracture of the right femur through the pinholes was diagnosed and stabilized with an intramedullary nail, achieving union and a good functional result. To our knowledge, this is the first described fracture through the pinholes after Orthopilot-assisted surgery with 4.5 mm threaded pins for tracker fixation. We believe that the number of such complicati...

Conclusions. Pharmacological treatment, rehabilitation, physical therapy and other methods appear to be inefficient in patients with hip OA awaiting THR and their costs are twice as high. Additionally, NSAID drugs produce GI ulcers in 25% of the patients. Psychosocial problems are also common for these patients. Surgical treatment produces a radical improvement of the quality of life and ameliorates psychosocial problems. Therefore, hip OA costs can only be reduced by shorter waiting times, which can be accomplished through an increase in funding resulting in wider access to the procedure.
