We present two cases of CCMs with anaplastic features in the intracranial and intraspinal region. The first case is a 65-year-old male who gradually developed changes in behavior over a period of 1 year. The second case is a 35-year-old female who presented with a 7-month history of posterior cervicothoracic pain and dysuria for 1 week. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intracranial lesion in the right frontal lobe in the male patient, and an intradural extramedullary lesion at C7 in the female patient. On histological examination, both tumors partly exhibited unusual anaplastic appearances with nuclear pleomorphism, ...

We report on an example of this paradigm, involving tanycytic ependymoma as the host tumor in a 40-year-old female who underwent two tumor extirpation procedures at one-year interval. She first presented with severe headaches, and was seen by imaging to harbor a moderately enhancing mass 2.5cm in diameter at the rostral septum pellucidum accompanied by occlusive hydrocephalus. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of solid, wavy fascicles of elongated cells that were occasionally interrupted by vague perivascular pseudorosettes. Mitotic activity was absent, and less than 1% of nuclei immunoreacted for MIB-1. A histological ...

In this study, we examined whether vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VABB) specimens provide an accurate immunohistochemical assessment of estrogen receptors (ER), progesterone receptors (PR), c-erbB-2, and p53 proteins. Thirty-seven consecutive cases with a VABB diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) were included. The immunohistochemical expression of ER and PR, c-erbB-2, and p-53 was assessed in VABB and in surgical specimens with pathological concordance. The "clinically relevant concordance rate" (CRCR) was calculated. The CRCRs were 77.8%, 77.8%, and 89% for ER, PR, and c-erbB-2, respectively. Concerning both ER a...

A 69-year-old man underwent right hemicolectomy for colon cancer in the transverse colon in 2005. Two years after surgery, he was admitted with abdominal pain. Colonoscopy revealed a submucosal tumor of approximately 4cm in size at the ileocolonic anastomosis site. In the biopsied samples from the anastomosis site, there was diffuse proliferation of large lymphoid cells, which were immunohistochemically positive for CD3 and CD4, but negative for CD8 and CD20. Clonality analysis of T-cell receptor-beta gene rearrangement revealed a single band, indicating monoclonal proliferation of the T- lymphocytes. Epstein-Barr viru...

HER2 is amplified and overexpressed in up to 20% of all breast carcinomas, and accurate assessment of the HER2-status is essential for the appropriate use of anti-HER2 therapies, including trastuzumab. Here, we have evaluated the accuracy of two commercially available and commonly used HER2 antibodies (antibody A0485 and HercepTest), followed by FISH-test, in 538 consecutive breast cancers, to identify a reliable procedure for the determination of HER2-status. Immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis revealed that 282 cases (52.2%) were positive (2+/3+) for antibody A0485, while only 179 cases (33.3%) were positive (2+/3+) f...

This study was based on the analysis of gastric biopsy specimens from 126 cases of H. pylori-associated gastritis, 16 cases of H. pylori-negative gastritis, 17 cases of gastric dysplasia, and 25 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma. The number of Tregs was elevated in H. pylori-associated gastritis, where it was positively correlated with the grade of chronic inflammation and the number of lymphoid follicles. It was significantly elevated in adenocarcinomas compared to chronic gastritis and gastric dysplasia. In summary, the number of Tregs is increased in H. pylori-associated gastritis and gastric cancer.

Micropapillary carcinoma is a rare distinct variant of high grade urothelial carcinoma, which has specific morphological characteristics and is almost always associated with muscularis propria and vascular invasion. No currently defined imaging techniques can reliably diagnose some types of deeply invasive urothelial carcinoma of urinary bladder, in particular its micropapillary variant. Therefore, the pathological findings are crucial in making the diagnosis. Micropapillary carcinoma (MPC) is a tumor with an aggressive clinical course, an advanced stage of disease at the time of presentation, and usually a poor outcom...

Mutation analysis of the KRAS oncogene is now established as a predictive biomarker in colorectal cancer (CRC). Large prospective clinical trials have shown that only CRCs with wild-type KRAS respond to anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) treatment. Therefore, mutation analysis is mandatory before treatment, and reliable benchmarks for the frequency and types of KRAS mutations have to be established for routinely testing large numbers of metastatic CRCs. A thousand and eighteen cases (879 primary tumors and 139 metastases) of metastatic colorectal cancer were analyzed for the KRAS mutational status of codons 1...

Solid-pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) is a rare pancreatic tumor primarily affecting women in their twenties. It is characterized by a well-demarcated or encapsulated mass, indolent behavior and favorable prognosis. Capsular or punctate calcification is occasionally observed. Reported herein is a case of SPN of the pancreas with massive calcification in a 76-year-old Japanese man. Macroscopically, the pancreatic tumor appeared to be a simple calcified nodule, but histological examination revealed that it was an epithelioid tumor with massive calcification. The tumor cells, forming nests and cords, had eosinophilic cytop...

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor (SLCT) is a rare tumor involving the ovary. Approximately 20% of SLCT are associated with heterologous elements that are either of endodermal or mesodermal origin. The gastrointestinal-type epithelium is the most commonly described endodermal heterologous element. SLCT with benign and borderline mucinous neoplasm has been reported in the literature. However, SLCT with mucinous adenocarcinoma as heterologous element has been rarely documented. Herein, we describe a rare case of intermediately differentiated Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor with mucinous adenocarcinoma as the heterologous element in a ...

We describe the case of a 62-year-old female with an intracapsular ca ex PA of the buccal mucosa with subsequent metastases to the lung. The metastatic deposits resembled benign PA with no histological evidence of malignancy. This pattern of spread is described with mPA, an entity that caused controversy in the past regarding its exact classification as a benign or malignant tumor. The possibility that ca ex PA originates from a mPA, with intracapsular ca ex PA representing an intermediate lesion in a histological continuum, is discussed.

They were polyclonal for T-cell receptor gamma chain gene rearrangement, indicating an NK cell lineage. The aggressive course in these two patients suggested that in nasal and nasal-type NK-cell lymphomas, CLA expression might be an indicator of poor prognosis. A differentiation towards myoepithelial cells has been demonstrated in several types of lesions in the breast. These include multifocal myoepitheliomatosis, the rare mixed tumor or pleomorphic adenoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, adenomyoepithelioma and myoepithelial carcinoma (malignant myoepithelioma). Myoepithelial carcinoma is the only lesion purely composed of myoepithelial cells. All these tumors are benign and/or of low-grade malignancy, with the exception of malignant myoepithelioma. In contrast to the statement of the current World Health Organization (WHO), recent studies have reported that regional and distant...

Absence of proximal convoluted tubules (APCT) is a specific pathomorphological change found in kidney with renal tubular dysgenesis (RTD). Non-specific structural abnormalities in the kidney with this disorder have rarely been reported. The aim of this study was to detect non-specific histopathological changes (NSHC) in RTD kidney, to evaluate their incidence, and to establish a possible relationship to various etiological-pathogenic variants of RTD. Kidneys of 12 patients with RTD diagnosed in 9 Israeli hospitals were studied. Paraffin sections were examined using histological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical s...

In this study, 21 cases of tuberculous abscesses encountered over a period of 13 years (1995-2007) were reviewed to study the clinical, radiological, and histopathological spectrum of the disease. The presence of palisading epithelioid cells and sheets of foamy histiocytes, enclosing a neutrophillic exudate rich in fibrin with nuclear debris, were clues as to suspicion of a tuberculous abscess. The demonstration of acid fast bacilli in the wall of the abscess or necrotic contents by microscopy or culture is essential to confirm the diagnosis of tuberculous abscess. A high index of clinical suspicion is necessary particular...

We report a case of synchronous double primary clear cell tumor in the liver and the kidney of a 70-year-old male. The renal mass was a renal cell carcinoma of mixed clear and granular cell types, and the hepatic mass was a hepatocellular carcinoma with extensive clear cell change that mimicked a metastatic renal cell carcinoma. A simple battery of immunohistochemical stains composed of hepatocyte antigen, and CD10 was performed to make a definite diagnosis.

We report a case of a right OSST with prominent characteristics of signet-ring stromal tumor in a 4-year-old girl with symptoms of premature thelarche. We describe the clinical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical findings and review the literature. To our knowledge, the 4-year-old patient presented here is the youngest case of OSST reported in premenarchal children. The presence of non-mucin/non-lipid obvious signet-ring-like cells in this case suggests a possible relationship between OSST and signet-ring stromal tumor of the ovary.

We report the case of a 17-year-old male who presented with progressive dyspnea due to a large mediastinal tumor with accompanying pericardial effusion. Percutaneous core needle biopsies showed differentiated pancreatic tissue with chronic inflammation and cystic transformation. On this basis, heterotopic pancreatic tissue of the mediastinum, a lesion occasionally reported in the literature, was suspected and the lesion was excised. The histopathological workup of the surgically excised lesion, in the first place, supported the primary diagnosis. However, after extensive sampling of the lesion, the diagnosis had to be chan...

Epithelioid vascular proliferations comprise a wide morphologic spectrum, ranging from reactive hyperplasia via benign tumor to malignant conditions. Epithelioid angiomatous nodule (EAN) is a recently recognized benign vascular proliferation with distinct clinical and pathological features. We review the literature and present six additional EANs in the head and neck examined by immunohistochemistry. This series comprised an equal number of males (n=3) and females (n=3) aged 13-45 years (mean 25.8 years). The sites of origin included the tongue (n=2), skin of the lip (n=2), periorbital and temporal skin (n=1), and nose...

In conclusion, HCA and HCC revealed changes in the expression of certain metabolic enzymes as compared with the non-neoplastic liver tissue or FNH. Therefore, reduced expression of GST alpha and CYP3A4 may indicate specific metabolic defects in the tumor tissue characterizing subgroups of HCA and HCC.

Data regarding the assessment of angiogenesis in liver tissue in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) are rare. The study was performed to explain the association between the histopathological features and the number of new blood vessels in lobules and portal tracts in CHC. The second aim of the study was to define the localization of sprouting and pattern of formation of new vessels by estimating CD 34 antigen expression in the liver. The study involved 74 patients with CHC, infected with viral genotype 1b before antiviral therapy. The number of new-formatted blood vessels was positively associated with fibrosis stage and inflam...

p53 is a well-known tumor suppressor gene, and its mutation is a common event in intraepidermal and invasive neoplasms of the skin. p63 is a homologue of the tumor suppressor gene p53, which is expressed in human basal squamous epithelium, and despite its homology to p53, it is considered to act as an oncogene. We evaluated p63 and p53 expression in usual skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), keratoacanthoma (KA), and intraepidermal neoplasms, including Bowen's disease (BD), actinic keratosis (AK), malignant melanoma in situ (MM in situ), and Paget's disease (PD) to clarify ...

Primary cardiac tumors are rare. Of all primary heart neoplasms, sarcomas account for around 10%, and of these, rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) constitute a minority. A case of primary left atrial RMS, reminiscent of leiomyosarcoma, is reported herein. Histologically, the tumor was composed of tightly-packed spindle-shaped cells arranged in long fascicles. At immunohistochemistry, the tumor cells stained strongly and diffusely with vimentin, muscle-specific actin, desmin and myogenin, and focally with fast-myosin and sarcomeric actin. WT-1 showed diffuse and intense cytoplasmic staining. Staining for calponin was weak. Stainin...

We report the cases of two patients in their fifties who presented with a growing abdominal mass and died of metastatic disease within less than a year. Histological assessment revealed large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma admixed with mucinous adenocarcinoma and teratoma. Different hypotheses regarding the origin of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ovary are discussed. The immunohistochemical pattern of staining for cytokeratin 7 and cytokeratin 20 suggests that the composite epithelial tumors originated from the pre-existing teratoma.

Since pulmonary adenocarcinomas, malignant mesotheliomas (MM), and sometimes benign mesothelial proliferations show a great histomorphological resemblance to each other, an immunohistochemical panel is usually necessary for differential diagnosis. D2-40 is an available monoclonal antibody, which is already in use as a lymphatic endothelial marker. It has also been suggested to be useful in identifying the mesothelial differentiation. The aim of this study is to compare D2-40 immunostaining in MM, pulmonary adenocarcinoma, and benign mesothelial proliferations. In this retrospective study, D2-40 immunostaining was inves...

This study attempted to determine if these cells would show aberrant E-cadherin expression, which imparts greater propensity for cell motility and invasion. Consecutive sections from breast tumors with a high frequency of FMCLD were double-immunostained for E-cadherin and a panel of related markers. The E-cadherin mRNA levels in cells overlying FMCLD and adjacent cells within the same duct were compared using real-time PCR. Nearly all the cell clusters overlying FMCLD were strongly immunoreactive for E-cadherin, whereas their adjacent counterparts within the same duct were largely negative. Cell clusters overlying FMCLD we...

We report a case of squamous cell carcinoma arising in a ciliated hepatic foregut cyst (CHFC) in the left lobe of the liver in a 60-year-old woman. Gross examination revealed an irregular, partially encapsulated, smooth tumor mass with multiple cystic areas, 3-5mm in size. Microscopically, the lining of the microcysts was composed of ciliated columnar epithelium with scattered goblet cells. Multiple foci of squamous metaplasia of the columnar epithelium were observed, which showed areas with dysplastic changes and other areas with carcinomatous transformation. Our case also showed an inconspicuous or absent smooth muscle l...

We report on an anaplastic oligodendroglioma and an anaplastic oligoastrocytoma that metastasized to cervical lymph nodes and bones. Both patients were women aged 54 and 30 years, and the metastases appeared following craniotomy. In the first patient, metastases to cervical lymph nodes developed one year after surgery, and, despite adjuvant therapy, recurred in the same location several times. Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the cervical lymph node prior to neck dissection suggested a possible metastatic primitive neuroepithelial tumor. In the second case, metastases to the sacrum and femur developed after surgery ...
