Behavioral Health Workforce Development in Washington State: Addition of a Behavioral Health Support Specialist
Psychiatr Serv. 2024 Apr 15:appips20230312. doi: 10.1176/appi.ps.20230312. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe mental and behavioral health workforce shortage has hindered access to care in the United States, resulting in long waitlists for persons who need behavioral health care. Global models for task sharing, combined with U.S.-led studies of nonspecialists delivering interventions for depression and anxiety, support the development of this workforce in a stepped care system. This Open Forum highlights an innovative effort in Washington State to initiate a bachelor's-level behavioral health support specialist curriculum l...

Self-Pay Outpatient Mental Health Care for Children and Adolescents, by Socioeconomic Status
CONCLUSIONS: The self-pay market for child mental health care potentially exacerbates inequities in access to care by burdening low-income families with high costs. Incentivizing mental health providers to participate in insurance for larger portions of their patient panels, for example, by increasing reimbursement rates and reducing paperwork, may help improve equitable access to mental health care. To the extent that reimbursement rates drive insurance acceptance, the frequency of self-pay mental health visits suggests that mental health services are underreimbursed relative to their benefit to patients and families.PMID...

Integrating Board-Certified Psychiatric Pharmacists in a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic
Psychiatr Serv. 2024 Apr 10:appips20230521. doi: 10.1176/appi.ps.20230521. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDemand for mental health services has dramatically increased in recent years, raising concerns about the availability of service providers to meet these increased needs. One approach to expanding access to care is the use of highly qualified board-certified psychiatric pharmacists (BCPPs). However, the implementation of programs for integrating BCPPs has not been well characterized in community mental health settings. This column describes the development and implementation of a comprehensive practice model to incorpora...

Exploring Data Collection Priorities of Community Partners in Early Psychosis Care
CONCLUSIONS: Large-scale aggregation of health care data collected as part of routine care offers opportunities for research and may have a positive impact on care delivery and quality improvement activities. However, these benefits are contingent on the data being both relevant and accessible to those who deliver and receive such care. This study highlights an approach that may inform the development of core assessment batteries used, optimizing the utility of such data for all community partners.PMID:38595117 | DOI:10.1176/appi.ps.20230455 (Source: Psychiatric Services)

The Role of Black Churches in Promoting Mental Health for Communities of Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Black Americans
CONCLUSIONS: Uptake of traditional mental health services was low, and reliance on faith and resource distribution by the church was high. Church-led interventions are needed to promote mental health at the individual and community levels. Mental health stigma, and negative attitudes toward mental health promotion in the community, may be addressed by integrating traditional mental health services in church-based recreational and leisure activities.PMID:38595118 | DOI:10.1176/appi.ps.20230263 (Source: Psychiatric Services)

Promoting Positive Self-Identity of Youths With Mental Disorders: Collaboration Between Academia and a Ministry of Education
Psychiatr Serv. 2024 Apr 10:appips20230056. doi: 10.1176/appi.ps.20230056. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInclusive schools reflect the dominant approach to education, yet many youths with mental disorders still attend special education schools. Although special education schools address educational, social, and developmental needs, they may increase students' self-stigma and hinder positive identity formation. Israel's Ministry of Education and an academic community mental health department partnered to address this challenge by developing a manual-based intervention for special education school settings. About 180 teacher...

Digital Navigator Training to Increase Access to Mental Health Care in Community-Based Organizations
Psychiatr Serv. 2024 Apr 10:appips20230391. doi: 10.1176/appi.ps.20230391. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProviding human support for users of behavioral health technology can help facilitate the necessary engagement and clinical integration of digital tools in mental health care. A team conducted digital navigator training that taught participants how to promote patrons' digital literacy, evaluate and recommend health apps, and interpret smartphone data. The authors trained 80 participants from 21 organizations, demonstrating this training's feasibility, acceptability, and need. Case studies explore the implementation of t...
