In this prospective observational study, the authors describe the natural history and visual outcome in eyes with untreated retinal angiomatous proliferation, a neovascular form of age-related macular degeneration. Rapid progression to poor vision was seen in the majority of patients.Page: 732DOI: 10.1097/IAE.0b013e3181a395cbAuthors: VIOLA, FRANCESCO MD *; MASSACESI, AMEDEO MD +; ORZALESI, NICOLA MD ++; RATIGLIA, ROBERTO MD *; STAURENGHI, GIOVANNI MD [S]

In this prospective nonrandomized interventional case series, 17 eyes from 16 patients with neovascularization secondary to retinal angiomatous proliferation were consecutively treated with intravitreal bevacizumab 1.25 mg. At 12 months, treated eyes had a significant functional and anatomical improvement. Treatment resulted in complete absence of angiographic leakage in 82% of eyes.Page: 740DOI: 10.1097/IAE.0b013e3181a0be1dAuthors: GHARBIYA, MAGDA MD; ALLIEVI, FRANCESCA MD; RECUPERO, VINCENZO MD; MARTINI, DELIA MD; MAZZEO, LUIGI MD; GABRIELI, CORRADO BALACCO MD

In eyes with macular edema associated with retinal vein occlusion, intravitreal injection of bevacizumab successfully reduced the macular edema, resulting in visual recovery. Retinal arterial macroaneurysm can cause hemorrhagic and/or exudative complications. Eyes with minimal hemorrhage from the aneurysm often showed an extensive exudative change that extended to the fovea. In these eyes, retinal edema was seen predominantly in the outer nuclear layer, accompanying a focal serous retinal detachment beneath the fovea.Page: 782DOI: 10.1097/IAE.0b013e3181a2f26aAuthors: TSUJIKAWA, AKITAKA MD; SAKAMOTO, ATSUSHI MD; OTA, MASAFUMI MD; OH, HIDEYASU MD; MIYAMOTO, KAZUAKI MD; KITA, MIHORI MD; YOSHIMURA, NAGAHISA MD

A retrospective optical coherence tomographic study with a manually assisted computer algorithm that analyzes optical coherence tomography images quantitatively showed that eyes with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy had a higher incidence of serous retinal detachments, greater serous retinal detachment height, and less intraretinal edema than eyes with exudative age-related macular degeneration.Page: 793DOI: 10.1097/IAE.0b013e3181a3b7d9Authors: OZAWA, SHINSUKE MD; ISHIKAWA, KOHEI MD; ITO, YASUKI MD; NISHIHARA, HIROAKI MD; YAMAKOSHI, TOMOMI MD; HATTA, YOSHIYUKI MD; TERASAKI, HIROKO MD

Clinical appearance and fluorescein angiography distinguish Batten disease (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses) from other childhood retinal diseases. Varied features observed include macular retinal pigment epithelium atrophy, epiretinal membrane, bull's eye maculopathy, bone spicules, and optic atrophy. Diffuse hyperfluorescence of the macula was present on angiography in most juvenile patients.Page: 657DOI: 10.1097/IAE.0b013e31819b0542Authors: HAINSWORTH, DEAN P. MD; LIU, GRACE T. In dye-assisted macular surgery, trypan blue, brilliant blue G, bromphenol blue, and Chicago blue cause significantly less morphologic changes at the retinal cleavage plane of the internal limiting membrane than indocyanine green. If morphologic changes correlate with functional deficits remains to be elucidated.Page: 669DOI: 10.1097/IAE.0b013e318196b1c8Authors: SCHUMANN, RICARDA G. The current study show that perfluorocarbon liquid is directly toxic to human retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19 cells) and that retinal ganglion cells are damaged in a time-dependent manner by the more mechanical than toxic effects of perfluorocarbon liquid. Silicone oil seems to exert mechanical than toxic effects on ARPE-19 cells.Page: 677DOI: 10.1097/IAE.0b013e318196fca1Authors: INOUE, MAIKO MD *; IRIYAMA, AYA MD +; KADONOSONO, KAZUAKI MD, PhD *; TAMAKI, YASUHIRO MD, PhD +; YANAGI, YASUO MD, PhD +

This paper demonstrates that visual prognosis in macular dystrophies associated with peripherin/RDS mutations may be mutation specific and, for the Arginine172Tryptophan substitution, worse than the Arginine142Tryptophan and Arg172Gln substitutions. It supports homogeneity of presentation and progression with the Arg172Trp substitution and provides quantitative estimates for progression of geographic atrophy and decline of visual acuity with age.Page: 682DOI: 10.1097/IAE.0b013e318198dbedAuthors: ANAND, SEEMA FRCSEd (Ophthal) *; SHERIDAN, EAMONN MRCOG +; CASSIDY, FRANCES BSc *++; INGLEHEARN, CHRIS PhD ++; WILLIAMS, GRANGE +...

The authors observed that preservative-free triamcinolone acetonide in an in vitro environment has more aggregates of smaller size than triamcinolone acetonide and triamcinolone acetonide injectable suspension. Triamcinolone acetonide injectable suspension has much larger aggregate size than preservative-free triamcinolone acetonide and triamcinolone acetonide, and this size increases over time after the injection.Page: 689DOI: 10.1097/IAE.0b013e31819e390aAuthors: MOSHFEGHI, ANDREW A.
