“ Dr. ” Raphael Nyarkotey Obu: Another example showing quackery ’ s the same all over the world
Orac has Google Alerts set up for various subjects, such as alternative medicine. This time around, it was a Google Alert that introduced him to "Dr." Raphael Nyarkotey Obu, who shows how quackery is the same all over the world, including in Ghana. Right-to-try: A bait and switch intended to weaken the FDA
On Wednesday, President Trump signed a federal right-to-try bill into law with great fanfare, making extravagant claims for it. It's time to reiterate one last time that right-to-try will not help terminally ill patients but it will strip important protections from them. It's pure snake oil. An unholy combination of methodolatry and quackery apologia —with jade eggs
Meet Dr. Jason Fung. Dr. Fung is unhappy with skeptics and thinks they're hypocrites behaving like religious fanatics. Unfortunately for him, his arguments are a combination of the worst methodolatry of evidence-based medicine combined with rants against conventional medicine and a defense of quackery. The cruel sham that is federal right-to-try has passed. Let patients beware!
“Right-to-try” laws are a cruel sham that purport to allow terminally ill patients access to promising experimental drugs. In reality, they strip away many protections and leave vulnerable patients on their own. After four years and a number of toothless state laws, a federal version of “right-to-try” has passed Congress and is poised to become law. Once President Trump signs the bill this week, this federal version of “right-to-try” will leave terminally ill patients on their own and will likely be the first step in returning the FDA to its pre-thalidomide state, in which it only required evidence of safety, n...

The British Columbia College of Naturopathic Physicians investigates naturopaths using CEASE therapy on autistic children
Naturopathy is quackery. If you doubt this, consider that you can't have naturopathy without homeopathy. What's even worse is when naturopaths subject autistic children to quackery like CEASE therapy. Expecting any naturopathic regulatory board to investigate quackery in naturopathy is the proverbial fox guarding the henhouse. Helen Lawson and black salve: Cutting, burning, and poisoning “ naturally ”
Cancer quacks frequently characterize conventional treatments for cancer as "cutting, poisoning, and burning." Yet, in Australia a woman with ovarian cancer chose black salve, in essence, "cutting, poisoning, and burning" (but mostly burning and without the cutting) to treat her disease. She died a horrible death. How can black salve still be a thing. The post Helen Lawson and black salve: Cutting, burning, and poisoning “naturally” appeared first on RESPECTFUL INSOLENCE. Here we go again. A naturopathic licensure bill stealthily passes the Michigan Senate
Naturopathic licensure is like The Terminator. It never, ever gives up. This time around, it's back in Michigan. Orac basks in the adoration of Gary Null (revised and greatly expanded)
Orac loves to bask in the adulation of his "fans." This time around, one of the old men of quackery, Gary Null, has decided that he really, really doesn't like science-based medicine. Michigan Vaccine Freedom Political Action Committee: Promoting antivaccine policies in my state
A childhood friend of mine, who is running for office, forwarded me a questionnaire from the Michigan Vaccine Freedom Political Action Committee. It consisted of questions about whether she would support vaccine "choice" and "freedom." Unfortunately, antivaccine advocacy groups are becoming more influential. Now they're trying to lobby like any other lobbying group. The Supreme Court of Canada grants a new trial to the parents who let Ezekiel Stephan die
David and Collet Stephan were convicted in 2016 for failure to provide the necessities of life for their son Ezekiel Stephan, who died of bacterial meningitis after his parents treated him with natural remedies, supplements, and naturopathy. Unfortunately, as a result of their appeal, the Canadian Supreme Court has granted them a new trial. Predictably, they are claiming vindication. The verdict is nothing of the sort, but will serve as propaganda for quacks for years to come. Crowdfunding for unproven stem cell treatments: Taking advantage of the generosity of strangers to pay for quackery
With the rise of quack stem cell clinics, there has been a rise of crowdfunding campaigns to assist patients in paying for expensive stem cell treatments of unproven efficacy. Unfortunately, as a recent study shows, these crowdfunding campaigns nearly always oversell efficacy and ignore potential risks of the treatments, while making powerful emotional appeals. The FDA brings the hammer down on two quack stem cell clinics
Last year, the FDA announced a regulatory framework for stem cell clinics, and hopes were raised that it would finally crack down on the hundreds of quack stem cell clinics in the US. Yesterday, the FDA dropped the hammer on two clinics, seeking injunctions in federal court to stop them. Is this the beginning of a real (and long overdue) crackdown on these clinics?
