Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a benign bone lesion. Histologically, the replacement of the normal substance of bone by fibro-osseous connective tissue is the most distinct character. Recent research shows that fibrous dysplasia is caused by a somatic activating mutation of the Gsalpha subunit of protein G. It may involve one bone (monostotic) or multiple bones (polyostotic). Diagnosis relies on X-ray examination and pathology. The indications and extent of surgical therapy for craniofacial FD are controversial. Nonsurgical pharmacological treatments have been disappointing. This review presented the recent advances in clin...

The indication of surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion is to correct the transverse maxillary deficiencies. With the purpose of increasing the width of narrow upper dental arch and of the nasal cavity, maxillary expansion can provide dental arch space for teeth alignment, and improve the masticatory efficiency and nasal respiration. Comparing to teeth anchored palatal expansion, bone anchored technique can reduce the periodental damage and root resorption of supporting teeth. The results of bone anchored method are stable and the relapse is low for long term follow-up. More time on surgical duration is the mai...
