Process Modeling of ABCDE Primary Survey in Trauma Resuscitations: A Crucial First Step for Agent-Based Simulation Modeling of Complex Team-Based Clinical Processes
Conclusions Overall, our data offered validity support for the blunt trauma primary survey process model. This process model was an important first step for the use of ABSM for the support of trauma care operations and team-based processes. Getting Ready for 2021 Joint Commission Perinatal Standards: Lessons From the Field
Summary Statement The new Joint Commission requirements on perinatal safety present a unique opportunity for the simulation community to actively engage with labor and delivery units nationwide. Considerations for implementation using “real-life” experience with the programmatic development of an in situ team-based simulation training program in obstetric emergencies are discussed. We urge simulationists to explore opportunities to promote culture change on a large scale to move the needle of maternal morbidity and mortality. Mapping Simulated-Based Learning Experiences Incorporated Into Professional Placements in Allied Health Programs: A Scoping Review
Summary Statement Emerging literature continues to demonstrate the use of innovative practices such as simulated-based learning experiences to prepare students for professional placements. This scoping review aimed to provide a broad overview of how simulated-based learning experiences have been implemented within or immediately before the professional practice placements of entry-level allied health programs. Four databases (MEDLINE, EMCARE, CINAHL, and Scopus) were searched up to August 2020. Kirkpatrick's evaluation framework was used to categorize outcomes, and the Simulation-Based Research Extension for the CONSOR...

Emotional Activation in Simulation: Measuring the Influence of Participant Roles and Scenario Design
Conclusions Hands-on learners were more emotionally activated than observers in both scenario designs. There was significant perceived anxiety, threat, and pleasurable arousal in both roles and both scenario designs. Pause-and-discuss scenarios demonstrated similar levels of activation as the immersive scenario design. The Affect Grid provided a quick subjective view of arousal and pleasure in simulation participants, potentially providing educators with an indication of whether emotional activation is positive (excitement) or negative (stressful) and may be helpful in educational planning and future research. Visual Fixation on the Thorax Predicts Bystander Breathing Detection in Simulated Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest, but Video Debriefing With Eye Tracking Gaze Overlay Does Not Enhance Postallocation Success Rate: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Introduction Bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is associated with higher survival rates. Even trained health care staff cannot assess breathing well enough to detect cardiac arrest. Recognition of cardiac arrest by lay rescuers might be overlooked in adult basic life support resuscitation guidelines, which explain what to do, but not how to do it. The 2015 Adult Advanced Life Support Resuscitation Guidelines recommend to “look for chest movement.” We hypothesize (1) that instructing lay rescuers to look for chest movement allows detecting breathing (or lack thereof); (2) that...

Preparing and Presenting Validation Studies: A Guide for the Perplexed
Summary Statement Simulated environments are frequently used for learner assessment, and a wide array of assessment instruments have been created to assist with this process. It is important, therefore, that clear, compelling evidence for the validity of these assessments be established. Contemporary theory recognizes instrument validity as a unified construct that links a construct to be assessed with a population, an environment of assessment, and a decision to be made using the scores. In this article, we present a primer on 2 current frameworks (Messick and Kane), define the elements of each, present a rubric that ...

Designing Sustainable Solutions to Implement a Distance-Based Simulation Basic Life Support Training Program During COVID-19 Pandemic in Low-Income Countries
Summary Statement The global pandemic of COVID-19 had strong repercussions in healthcare simulation-based education around the world. Different adaptations to imposed restraints such as social distancing have been developed to address the educational needs of healthcare professionals. However, the lack of access to simulators in low-income countries or rural areas may restrict the access to distance simulation-based training. Creation of a Novel Hands-on Model to Teach Breast Tanner Staging to Pediatric Learners
Conclusions We show that the use of a synthetic, 3-dimensional, lifelike breast model to teach breast Tanner staging may be valuable within the context of pediatric medical education. Further refinement of the model as well as curriculum development and evaluation is necessary before broadly disseminating this model as an educational tool.
