Massive peritoneal inclusion cyst with secondary abscessation
AbstractPeritoneal inclusion cysts are rare intra-abdominal cystic lesions of controversial pathogenesis and nomenclature. Postulated to be of neoplastic or reactive origin, they are characterised by progressive expansion and variable symptomatology in classically reproductive-aged females. Local recurrence is frequent while malignant transformation is plausible. Herein, we review a presentation of a massive peritoneal inclusion cyst with secondary abscessation and septic shock in a 58-year-old female, reviewing the available literature to highlight the potential acuity of this pathology, the standard of surgical care, and...

Buttressed pancreaticogastrostomy for a soft pancreas and/or small pancreatic duct in pancreaticoduodenectomy: A retrospective cohort study
ConclusionButtressing PG represents a simple and safe reconstruction technique following PD, particularly for patients with a soft pancreas and/or small pancreatic duct. This approach is associated with a low incidence of POPF. However, prospective randomised trials with large sample sizes are required to confirm these results. (Source: Surgical Practice)

Comparing the safety and effectiveness of surgical approaches in thymectomy
ConclusionsOur results suggest that with a shorter LOS, robotics, subxiphoid and LVATS thymectomies are safe. Larger size studies are required to compare R0 resection rates between these less invasive surgical approaches. (Source: Surgical Practice)

Use of surgical procedure manager to standardise operation steps and monitor surgeon performance in open repair of inguinal hernia
ConclusionsThe use of SPM did not significantly prolong the operation time and produce comparable operative outcomes in open hernia repair. It provided the additional advantage of standardising operation steps and monitoring the performance of surgical trainees during their training. (Source: Surgical Practice)

Diabetic mastopathy: A case report and literature review on a mimic of breast carcinoma in patients with diabetes
AbstractDiabetic mastopathy is a rare benign breast condition that mimics breast carcinoma in patients with diabetes. Clinicians must differentiate it from malignant causes because of differences in prognosis and management. This paper presents a case report of an 87-year-old lady with type 2 diabetes and diabetic mastopathy. We also review the literature on the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostic workup and management of diabetic mastopathy. (Source: Surgical Practice)

Colonoscopy combined with laparoscopy can improve post ‐operative quality of life in patients with colon cancer
ConclusionsColonoscopy combined with laparoscopic radical resection for colon cancer had only a little effect on immune function and inflammatory response. It can shorten the recovery time of patients and reduce post-operative complications, which is worthy of further clinical promotion. (Source: Surgical Practice)

Paraganglioma of the thyroid gland: A case report and literature review
We report on a middle-aged man with thyroid paraganglioma that presented as an incidental finding on the computed tomography scan of the thorax. Preoperative fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was suggestive of a neuroendocrine tumour. Hemithyroidectomy was performed and histological findings were most compatible with paraganglioma arising from the thyroid gland. The diagnosis of primary thyroid paraganglioma is rarely established by FNAC preoperatively due to architectural similarities with other thyroid tumours; the most important clinical technique for differentiating thyroid paraganglioma from other histology is im...

Laparoscopy versus laparotomy in the management of abdominal trauma
ConclusionsLaparoscopic surgical procedures present a viable and practical alternative to laparotomy in appropriate cases for patients. The decision to choose laparoscopy as a surgical approach should depend on the surgeon's proficiency and the availability of required resources. (Source: Surgical Practice)

Off ‐label application of the breast expander magnet: An alternative approach to enable localisation and removal of ferromagnetic subcutaneous foreign bodies
ConclusionOff-label application of the breast expander magnet allows for FFB pre-operative localisation and safe intra-operative surgical guidance, thus representing a promising off-label application of the device. After surgical removal of FFBs, the magnetic resonance imaging is allowed without any risk. (Source: Surgical Practice)
