Selective peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor {gamma} (PPAR{gamma}) modulation as a strategy for safer therapeutic PPAR{gamma} activation.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) is a clinically validated target for treatment of insulin resistance. PPARgamma activation by full agonists such as thiazolidinediones has shown potent and durable glucose-lowering activity in patients with type 2 diabetes without the concern for hypoglycemia or gastrointestinal toxicities associated with some other medications used to treat this disease. However, thiazolidinediones are linked to safety and tolerability issues such as weight gain, fluid retention, edema, congestive heart failure, and bone fracture. Distinctive properties of PPARgamma provide ...

The causes, prevalence and treatment of obesity revisited in 2009: what have we learned so far?email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Obesity is a chronic disease that is increasing in prevalence in the United States and worldwide and is often accompanied by multiple comorbidities that lead to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In April 2009, the American Society for Nutrition hosted the symposium "An Integrative View of Obesity" at Experimental Biology 2009 in New Orleans, LA. The presentations addressed the causes of the obesity epidemic and notably discussed a combination of genetics, obesogenic environment, cultural and racial concerns, and treatment modalities based on what we have learned from research into the physiology and neuroendo...

Lifestyle interventions for the treatment of class III obesity: a primary target for nutrition medicine in the obesity epidemic.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Although rates of obesity have increased universally in the United States over the last 30 y, it is clear that certain individuals are more susceptible to weight gain than others. Extreme obesity [body mass index (BMI; in kg/m(2)) > 40] is increasing at rates greater than any other class of obesity in the United States. Severely obese patients often suffer from a wide variety of comorbidities. Although weight-loss surgery is the most effective treatment, it offers little in the way of large-scale containment due to its costly and invasive nature. Lifestyle interventions that induce modest weight loss and improve fit...

Adiponectin in insulin resistance: lessons from translational research.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Adiponectin is an adipose tissue-secreted endogenous insulin sensitizer, which plays a key role as a mediator of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma action. Adiponectin alters glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity, exhibits antiinflammatory and antiatherogenic properties, and has been linked with several malignancies. Circulating concentrations of adiponectin are determined primarily by genetic factors, nutrition, exercise, and abdominal adiposity. Adiponectin concentrations are lower in subjects with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. Adiponectin knockout mice manifest glucose i...

Adolescent beverage habits and changes in weight over time: findings from Project EAT.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: We showed no association between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, juice consumption, and adolescent weight gain over a 5-y period. A direct association between diet beverages and weight gain appeared to be explained by dieting practices. Adolescents who consumed little or no white milk gained significantly more weight than their peers who consumed white milk. Future research that examines beverage habits and weight among adolescents should address portion sizes, adolescent maturation, and dieting behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: Increased REE in subjects with HIV lipoatrophy cannot be explained by differences in organ-tissue mass as modeled by DXA. Instead, DXA and regression modeling of REE suggests that skeletal muscle is hypermetabolic in patients with HIV lipoatrophy. A reversal of the increase in energy intake of approximately 2000 kJ/d (500 kcal/d) for adults and of 1500 kJ/d (350 kcal/d) for children would be needed for a reversal to the mean body weights of the 1970s. Alternatively, large compensatory increases in physical activity (eg, 110-150 min/d walking), or a combination of both, would achieve the same outcome. Population approaches to reducing obesity should emphasize a reduction in the drivers of increased energy intake. PMID: 19828708 [PubMed - as supplie...

Cumulative effects and predictive value of common obesity-susceptibility variants identified by genome-wide association studies.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: Common variants for BMI have small effects on obesity measures and show different association patterns with anthropometric traits, with the largest effect shown for the FTO locus. These variants have cumulative effects, yet their predictive value for obesity risk is limited. PMID: 19812171 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Prenatal food supplementation fortified with multiple micronutrients increases birth length: a randomized controlled trial in rural Burkina Faso.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: The provision of FFS to pregnant women resulted in higher birth length than did MMN supplementation. For women with a suboptimal prepregnancy nutritional status, MMN supplementation should be complemented with a balanced energy and protein supplement to produce a clinical effect on birth size. The trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00909974. PMID: 19812173 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Effect of short-term high-protein compared with normal-protein diets on renal hemodynamics and associated variables in healthy young men.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: A short-term HP diet alters renal hemodynamics and renal excretion of uric acid, sodium, and albumin. More attention should be paid to the potential adverse renal effects of HP diets. {omega}-3 Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid intake and 12-y incidence of neovascular age-related macular degeneration and central geographic atrophy: a prospective cohort study from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: The 12-y incidence of CGA and NV AMD in participants at moderate-to-high-risk of these outcomes was lowest for those reporting the highest consumption of omega-3 LCPUFAs. If these results are generalizable, they may guide the development of low-cost and easily implemented preventive interventions for progression to advanced AMD. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00594672. PMID: 19812176 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Optimal gestational weight gain ranges for the avoidance of adverse birth weight outcomes: a novel approach.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: Considerably wider optimal GWG ranges than recommended by the Institute of Medicine might be tolerated with respect to avoidance of adverse birth weight outcome. Stratification by maternal body mass index category alone might not be sufficient. PMID: 19812177 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Randomized trial on the effects of a 7-d low glycemic diet and exercise intervention on insulin resistance in older obese humans.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that the metabolic improvements after short-term exercise training in older obese individuals are dependent on increased physical activity and are not influenced by a low-GI diet. However, a low-GI diet has added benefit in alleviating hypertension, thus reducing the risk of diabetic and vascular complications.
