The Role of State versus Trait Anxiety on Cognition in Older Adults with Major Depressive Disorder
As one of the most prevalent and debilitating mental health conditions, depression can have a substantial negative impact on cognition. Late-life depression (LLD) or major depressive disorder in people older than 60 has been linked to significant cognitive impairment, with several potential mechanisms explaining the association between LLD and the increased risk of a later dementia diagnosis 1. Indeed, LLD is associated with systemic inflammation, cerebrovascular disease, and neurodegeneration that alone or in combination may perpetuate cognitive decline 2-4. National Estimates of Incremental Work Absenteeism Costs Associated with Adult Children of Parents with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias
Informal caregivers serve as the backbone of long-term care and support systems for older adults in the US.(1,2) About 83% of assistance to seniors is provided by informal caregivers, who are often unpaid family members and friends, and there are approximately 53 million of them.(2,3) Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) is a progressive disease that worsens with varying levels of symptoms, including memory loss, personality change, and functional and cognitive limitations. In advanced stages of dementia, individuals can no longer communicate, recognize family and friends, swallow, or walk independently. (Sourc...

Time to Diagnosis and Its Predictors in Syndromes Associated With Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration
CONCLUSIONS: The identification of predictors of time to diagnosis might improve current diagnostic algorithms, resulting in a timely initiation of symptomatic treatments, early involvement in clinical trials, and more adequate public health policies for patients and their families.PMID:38521735 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2024.03.002 (Source: The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry)

Cognitive and Hippocampal Changes in Older Adults With Subjective Cognitive Decline After Acupuncture Intervention
CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that acupuncture may improve the cognitive function of SCD individuals, and increase hippocampal volume on the regional level and enhance the structural and functional connectivity of hippocampus on the connective level.PMID:38521736 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2024.03.001 (Source: The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry)

Demographics, Symptoms, Psychotropic Use, and Caregiver Distress in Patients with Early vs Late Onset Dementia
An estimated 6.7 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease and this number is expected to rise to 13.8 million by 2060.1 Although the incidence of Alzheimer's disease increases with age,2 some persons develop Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) at ages less than 65 years, which is referred to as Early-Onset Dementia (EOD).3,4 The onset of dementia differs from the usual patient with ADRD who develops dementia sometime after age 65, referred to as late onset dementia (LOD). The prevalence of EOD among Alzheimer's disease is approximately 5-6%,5,6 with the expectation this number will rise with improved screeni...

Clinical Accuracy of Serum Neurofilament Light to Differentiate Frontotemporal Dementia from Primary Psychiatric Disorders is Age-Dependent
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is one of the most common forms of early-onset dementia (1). The most common presentation is the behavioural variant of FTD (bvFTD) manifesting in personality and behavioural changes (2). Symptoms like decreased empathy and emotional reactivity, apathy, and compulsive behaviours significantly overlap with those of non-neurodegenerative primary psychiatric disorders (PPD) including major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), schizophrenia (SZ), and personality disorders (2,3). Commentary: Illuminating the role of non-English language preference in healthcare disparities for older adults with cognitive impairment
Our older adult population, including those living with cognitive impairment, is ethnically and racially diverse and will become even more diverse in the coming years. Ensuring that all segments of our older adult population with cognitive impairment have access to timely and high-quality healthcare is essential from a health equity perspective (1). However, there is now abundant evidence of healthcare disparities for minoritized populations (2). (Source: The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry)

Gluing Together a Fragmented Healthcare System for Geriatrics Will Be Hard. It's Time for United Action
Am J Geriatr Psychiatry. 2024 Apr;32(4):393-404. doi: 10.1016/j.jagp.2024.01.026.ABSTRACT"Gluing" together integrated Geriatric Clinical Service lines (GCSL) within the US healthcare system is a significant challenge. Reasons encompass health professional workforce shortages, inconsistent requirements for geriatric educational competencies among the health professional disciplines, preconceived ageist attitudes about older adults with complex illnesses, and a US healthcare system infrastructure that is not aligned with longitudinal and interdisciplinary care needs for older adults. This review focuses on three major charac...
