Psoriasis and alcohol: is cutaneous ethanol one of the missing links?email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Abstract Many exogenous factors including excessive alcohol consumption have been associated with psoriasis, but the underlying mechanisms still remain elusive. Drinking worsens therapeutic compliance, decreases the efficacy and increases the toxicity of systemic antipsoriatic treatments. Excess alcohol intake results in compromised immunity and increased risk of infections, but alcohol can induce proinflammatory cytokine production in various cell types and can increase mitogen-derived lymphocyte proliferation and lymphocyte activation. As we have previously reported, alcohol and one of its metabolites acetone induce ...

Dermoscopic features of Acral Lentiginous Melanoma in a large series of 110 cases in a white population.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSION The presence of a parallel-ridge pattern and/or the irregular diffuse pigmentation within the lesion is highly indicative of melanoma on volar skin. An irregular lines pattern is the most prominent dermoscopic feature of pigmented ALM of the nail apparatus. Amelanotic ALM either in volar skin or in nail apparatus is characterized by remnants of pigmentation and polymorphic vascular pattern. BRAF V600E mutation and the tumour suppressor IGFBP7 in atypical genital naevi.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions The prevalence of BRAF V600E in AGN suggests that ultraviolet exposure is not essential for generating the mutation. The BRAF V600E mutational status appears to be of limited diagnostic utility in distinguishing genital naevi that exhibit atypia from those that do not. Similar to oncogenic BRAF-positive common naevi without atypia, enhanced expression of the tumour suppressor IGFBP7 in oncogenic BRAF-positive AGN supports that they are biologically inert. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and Chelsea & Westminster TEN protocol. Br J Dermatol. 2009 Nov 11; Authors: de Sica-Chapman A, Williams G, Soni N, Bunker CB Summary Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a rare but life-threatening, allergic drug reaction. Skin blistering with epidermal and mucosal necrolysis with subsequent detachment from an inflamed underlying dermis is a hallmark of the condition. The pathogenesis of TEN is not well understood, accounting for controversies about its management and significant delay in initiating potentially beneficial therapy. The...

Factors affecting histological tumour-free margin after excision of Basal Cell Carcinoma.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions. We underestimated tumour extent at only 4% of margins. The most important factor affecting eventual histological margin was tissue shrinkage. Our novel technique allowed us to demonstrate that this shrinkage is not uniform across the specimen, but is disproportionately high in the tumour free margin. This suggests that previous estimates of margin shrinkage, based on whole-specimen contraction measurements, may have been erroneously low. Conclusion A higher prevalence of hypertension in women with androgenetic alopecia has been found. The elevated aldosterone values in these patients may contribute, alongside other mechanisms, to the development of AGA and may also explain the higher prevalence of hypertension. Blood pressure screening of women with AGA will permit earlier diagnosis of an unsuspected hypertension and initiation of appropriate treatment. Place of human amniotic membrane immunoblotting in the diagnosis of autoimmune bullous dermatoses.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusion: Amniotic membrane immunoblotting is an interesting diagnostic tool for bullous diseases, as the entire panel of auto-antibodies can be detected with a single extract. This method improves the identification of complex and heterogeneous autoimmune processes, in conjunction with IIF and ELISA, and is particularly useful for MMP characterization. In vitro model for penetration of sensory nerve fibres on a Matrigel basement membrane: implications for possible application to intractable pruritus.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: Membrane-associated MMP-2 contributes to penetration of nerve fibres into Matrigel through modulation by axonal guidance molecules and/or ECM. These findings provide insight for understanding the development of intractable pruritus involving epidermal nerve density. Contact allergy to allergens of the TRUE-test (panels 1 and 2) has decreased modestly in the general population.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: Although the overall prevalence of contact allergy decreased in the general population, frequent contact allergens such as fragrance mix II and methyldibromo glutaronitrile were not tested. Thus, contact allergy remains prevalent in the general population. PMID: 19857210 [PubMed - in process] (Source: The British Journal of Dermatology)
