Titanium Mesh for guided bone regeneration: a Systematic Review
This systematic review aims to evaluate the results reported in the literature regarding the success rate of both titanium mesh technique and dental implant. The topic was focused on the presence of the titanium meshes used as a physical barrier for ridge reconstruction in partial or total edentulism. The authors conducted an electronic search of four databases up to October 2023. A total of 6 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. A total of 100 titanium mesh were studied for a minimum of 4.6 months follow-up surgery and a total of 241 implants were placed. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

A systematic review and meta-analysis of surgical approaches for improving airway stability in infants with Robin Sequence: evaluating complications and outcomes
The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the most effective and least morbid surgical technique for relieving retroglossal airway obstruction in infants with Robin Sequence (RS). The study adhered to PRISMA guidelines and included 25 studies (24 cohorts and 1 case series) that investigated interventions for airway improvement, including conservative measures, tongue-lip adhesion (TLA), mandibular distraction (MDO), and tracheostomy. The primary outcome variable was complication rates, while predictor variable was the interventions for airway improvement. (Source: The British Journal of Oral ...

Transconjunctival approach: Revisited and Anatomical considerations
Transconjunctival approach was first described byBourqetin 1923. It has become a routine procedure for management of orbital floor, medial and lateral walls and infraorbital rim fractures. In addition, it is used in aesthetic surgery and access surgery. The different approaches of transconjunctival surgery can be complicated by the complex lower lid anatomy. In this publication we revisit the anatomy of transconjunctival approach, and the surgical steps for pre and post septal dissection is discussed. Changing patterns of Penetrating Neck Injuries at a London based level 1 major trauma centre – a 5 year review
This study aimed to review the change in patterns of penetrating neck injuries (PNI) over a five year period at our level 1 major trauma centre.Data was retrospectively collected on all patients presenting to the emergency department with penetrating neck injuries between 2016 and 2021.Penetrating neck injuries doubled between 2016 and 2021, accounting for 11% of all penetrating trauma in 2021. Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Alloplastic Temporomandibular Joint Replacement Surgery: A Multi-National Survey of Temporomandibular Joint Surgeons
Temporomandibular disorders include a wide spectrum of extraarticular and intraarticular conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). In salvage cases involving intraarticular end-stage disease, alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) is a management option which can be utilized to rehabilitate a disabled joint ’s function and form. Whilst post-TMJR infection is rare, it is one of the most serious complications. The principles governing TMJR surgery antibiotic prophylaxis have been based on those established in the orthopaedic surgery literature. UK OMF surgeons support changes to current specialty recruitment process which could include ‘Walport’ style local selection and national benchmarking
Recruitment to OMFS specialty training was centralised in 2010. The ‘flexibility’ for OMFS to respond to specialty specific recruitment issues is reducing and many ST posts are left unfilled. The NIHR appointment process designed to address the problem of recruiting and appointing academic surgeons with local selection with national benchmarking has worked. Effect of duration of preoperative pain on outcomes of total temporomandibular joint replacement
The purpose of the study is to determine whether duration of preoperative pain affects outcomes of temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR). Twenty-seven patients that underwent primary TMJR between 01/07/2020-31/10/2022 were assessed retrospectively for duration of preoperative pain, pre- and post-operative pain on visual analogue scale (VAS), pre- and post-operative range of motion (ROM), and postoperative quality of life. Surgical success was defined as postoperative pain ≤4 and either postoperative ROM≥30mm or net change (Δ) in ROM≥10mm. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Prognostic Biomarkers for Malignant Progression of Oral Epithelial Dysplasia: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Oral Epithelial Dysplasia (OED) is a premalignant condition, which carries an appreciable risk of malignant progression. The current grading system for severity of OED, as defined by the World Health Organisation, is a valuable clinical tool but further work is required to improve the accuracy of predicting OED malignant progression. This systematic review aims to assess progress in prognostic biomarker discovery in OED over the past 16 years. The primary objective was to update the latest evidence on prognostic biomarkers that may predict malignant progression of OED – with strict inclusion criteria of studies with a lon...

Uvuloplasty during soft palate cleft reconstruction
The uvula has been a subject of contradictory observations.1 The aesthetic reconstruction of the uvula during soft palate cleft reconstruction is an important outcome measure from the parents ’ perspective.2 It therefore should be repaired during palatoplasty. The conventional method for uvula repair involves suturing the two hemi-uvulas together, often resulting in a displaced, small, scarred, and contracted uvula. Techniques of uvuloplasty have been described to create a more aesthet ically appearing uvula. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Effective strategies in the management of anterior mandibular fractures: a comprehensive systematic review
This review examines the prevailing modalities for fractures of the anterior mandible, which represent a significant proportion of the maxillofacial injuries commonly treated by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The article traces the historical shift from conservative techniques to the dominant management strategies of open reduction and fixation. Encompassing a range of studies, the review, in accordance with PRISMA 2020 recommendations, meticulously examines various fixation methods, assessing their efficacy in achieving stability of fracture, early healing, and mobilisation.
