We report the imaging appearances of an unusual case of combined soft-tissue and intraosseous arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the hand with marked periosteal elevation in a 12-year-old child. Although associated skeletal changes are common, diffuse periosteal elevation owing to direct communication of the AVM with the subperiosteal space has not, to the best of our knowledge, been reported previously.

Uterine artery embolisation is an increasingly used modality for the treatment of uterine leiomyomata. A 45-year-old woman with menorrhagia due to fibroids was discovered at uterine artery embolisation to have absent uterine arteries. Knowledge of the potential anatomical variants is important for those carrying out uterine artery embolisation, and further investigation of alternative treatment methods is required.

We report a rare case of cervical chordoma masquerading radiologically as an extracranial nerve sheath tumour. A laterally situated chordoma (centred extra-osseously in the neural foramen) was diagnosed radiologically as a neurofibroma pre-operatively. We review the key radiological features for diagnosis of chordoma. We consider the importance of pre-operative diagnosis of chordoma in guiding management and in determining survival.

We present findings of persistent left superior vena cava, anomalous right superior pulmonary venous return into the right-sided superior vena cava and a sinus venosus-type atrial septal defect detected incidentally by CT pulmonary angiography. To our knowledge, there has been no previous case report with all of the above findings detected by CT. In addition to the radiological findings and their clinical significance, the anatomy and embryological explanation of each anomaly is discussed.

We present an extremely rare case of a non-bifurcating carotid artery through which intra-arterial chemotherapy for laryngeal cancer was administered. The CCA angiogram, as well as ultrasonographic evaluation of the carotid arteries, demonstrated a non-bifurcating CCA that subsequently constituted the ICA. Furthermore, several branches normally given off by the ECA arose directly from the single carotid artery. Superselective intra-arterial infusion of cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II) (CDDP) was subsequently performed.

We report two unusual cases of tuberculous lymphadenitis mimicking metastatic lymph nodes from papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Pre-operative ultrasonography of the cervical nodes suggested a metastasis with cystic necrosis and calcification in PTC patients, but permanent pathology revealed tuberculosis lymphadenitis after neck dissection. In cases suspicious for metastatic cervical nodes in patients with PTC, fine-needle aspiration cytology may be indicated for the differential diagnosis of tuberculosis lymphadenitis, especially in those who have experienced tuberculosis in the past.

Irregular surface compensation uses dynamic multileaf collimators to modify the fluence to an irregular surface along the cranio-caudal axis. The depth of the compensation surface can be varied by specifying a user-defined parameter called the transmission penetration depth (TPD). In our institution, a review has been carried out of 60 breast patients treated using irregular surface compensation of the tangent fields. The effect of changes in the TPD on the dose distribution was investigated, and the optimum TPD was correlated with the maximum field separation (Smax) along the posterior border. Reducing the TPD below 5...

The recent discussion and debate about the use of in vivo dosimetry as a routine component of the radiotherapy treatment process has not included the limitations introduced by the physical characteristics of the detectors. Although a robust calibration procedure will ensure acceptable uncertainties in the measurements of tumour dose, further work is required to confirm the accuracy of critical organ measurements with a diode or a thermoluminescent dosemeter outside the main field owing to limitations caused by a non-uniform X-ray energy response of the detector, differences between the X-ray energy spectrum inside and ...

T1 of native cartilage is frequently assumed to be constant. To redress this, the spatial variation of T1 in unenhanced healthy human knee cartilage in different compartments and cartilage layers was investigated. Knees of 25 volunteers were examined on a 1.5 T MRI system. A three-dimensional gradient echo sequence with a variable flip angle, in combination with parallel imaging, was used for rapid T1 mapping of the whole knee. Regions of interest (ROIs) were defined in five different cartilage segments (medial and lateral femoral cartilage, medial and lateral tibial cartilage and patellar cartilage). Pooled histograms...

We present a clinical example for which the model accurately tracks tumour growth, and shows the correspondence to genetic variation (as determined by array comparative genomic hybridisation). One clinical implication of our work is that the assessment of heterogeneous tumours using Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumours (RECIST) or volume measurements may not accurately reflect tumour growth, stability or the response to treatment. We believe that this is the first model linking the macro-scale appearance of tumours to their genetic composition. We anticipate that our model will provide a more informative way to as...

Severe brain damage is often followed by serious complications. Quantitative measurements, such as regional volume and surface area under various conditions, are essential for understanding functional changes in the brain and assessing prognosis. The affected brain tissue in patients suffering from severe brain injury is variable; hence traditional methods used in imaging are not always applicable, and automatic methods may not be able to match the individual observer. Stereological techniques are alternative tools in the quantitative description of biological structures, and have been increasingly applied to the human...

Following transcatheter arterial chemoembolisation (TACE), the appearances on CT or MR images are largely related to the chemical and ischaemic insults to the portal tract. Understanding the mechanism of TACE-induced changes is essential for radiologists in order to determine the therapeutic effect as well as to distinguish these changes from recurrent tumours. This pictorial review illustrates the haemodynamic and substantial parenchymal changes related to TACE for hepatic malignancy.

In conclusion, a higher prostate volume reduction during 3D-CRT was demonstrated when RT planning was performed within 3 months of NAD. However, this reduction and daily organ motion may lead to an unpredictable increase in rectal doses.

We compared the diagnostic performance of non-enhanced MRI and fat-suppressed contrast-enhanced MRI (CEMRI) in diagnosing intravertebral clefts in benign vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). We retrospectively reviewed 99 consecutive patients who had undergone percutaneous vertebroplasty for VCFs. A cleft was defined as a signal void or hyperintense area on non-enhanced MRI (T1 and T2 weighted imaging) or as a hypointense area within a diffusely enhanced vertebra on CEMRI. A cleft was confirmed as a solid opacification on post-procedural radiographs. The interobserver reliability and MRI diagnostic performance were ...

In conclusion, IMRT_Tomo for CSI is technically easier and potentially dosimetrically favourable compared with IMRT_LA and 3DCRT. IMRT for CSI can also be realised on a conventional linear accelerator even for spinal lengths exceeding maximum allowable field sizes. The longer beam-on time in IMRT_Tomo raises concerns about intrafraction motion and whole-body integral doses.

We report cerebral cystic meningioangiomatosis in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 2. An 18-year-old woman presented with progressive hemiparesis secondary to a meningioma at the foramen magnum. Her MR examination also demonstrated three small cortical and subcortical cystic lesions. She underwent surgery for the meningioma, but died from brainstem infarction. Post-mortem histopathological examination of the cystic lesions showed enlarged subcortical perivascular spaces with overlying meningioangiomatosis. The unusual features and possible pathogenesis are discussed.

We report multidetector row CT images of multiple gastrointestinal tumours in a patient with Type 1 neurofibromatosis who presented with haemoperitoneum. The use of CT demonstrated multiple, variably sized, ovoid, relatively well-enhancing masses in the intramural or subserosal location of the jejunum. The largest mass that showed a haemorrhagic necrosis caused haemoperitoneum. These imaging features are unique and differ from previous imaging features that have been reported in the radiological literature.
