Antidepressants and extrapyramidal symptoms
The newer non ‐tricyclic antidepressants have occasionally been associated with development of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPSs). However, no large‐scale epidemiological or observational studies have examined this reported association. Recognizing the need to evaluate further the association between antidepressa nt use and extrapyramidal reactions in clinical practice settings, investigators conducted a pharmacoepidemiological study in a large cohort. Antidepressant effect of ketamine requires opioid system activation
A placebo ‐controlled study in which participants with treatment‐resistant depression received naltrexone prior to infusion of ketamine found that the opioid antagonist blocked ketamine's antidepressant effects but not the dissociation induced by ketamine. These findings suggest that the antidepressant ef fect of ketamine requires activation of the opioid system. (Source: The Brown University Psychopharmacology Update)

No increased risk of malformations in infants exposed to quetiapine in utero
A study based on data from a reproductive safety database has found no increased risk of major malformations in infants exposed to quetiapine during early pregnancy, compared with unexposed infants whose mothers had a psychiatric illness history. These results are consistent with previous findings suggesting no strong association between fetal exposure to atypical antipsychotics and increases in the prevalence of major malformations. Research supports methylphenidate for ADHD in youths, amphetamines in adults
Findings from a comprehensive systematic review and meta ‐analysis of medications to treat attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) support methylphenidate as the first‐choice option for the treatment of children and amphetamines as the preferred choice in adults. The findings apply to short‐term treatment with the medications over 12 weeks , as the researchers did not reach conclusive findings for 26‐ and 52‐week timepoints because of a scarcity of data. Prazosin study finds reduction in quantity, not frequency, of alcohol use
A 12 ‐week double‐blind study involving individuals with alcohol use disorder has found that the alpha‐1 adrenergic receptor antagonist prazosin reduced the likelihood of heavy drinking relative to placebo. Prazosin did not reduce the frequency of drinking as measured by the number of drinking days per week. (Source: The Brown University Psychopharmacology Update)
