CONCLUSION: MBL production is an important mechanism of carbapenem resistance among Pseudomonas species but not among Acinetobacter species. EDS is more sensitive for detection of MBLs than modifi ed Hodge test. Both EDTA-meropenem and EDTA-ceftazidime combination must be used to detect all the MBL producers. Carbapenemases other than MBL may also be responsible for carbapenem resistance. AmpC beta-lactamase is also a contributory factor for carbapenem resistance among the isolates in the hospital.

CONCLUSION: Mutations of S91F and D95A/G/N in gyrA combined with S87N in parC was the most prevalent mutation pattern of fluoroquinolone resistant N. gonorrhoeae isolates. This mutation pattern was associated with a high level of quinolone resistance (MIC >16.0 microg/ml) which can serve as a maker for quinolone-resistance prediction in Shanghai, P.R. of China.

CONCLUSION: There are gender differences in sexual behaviour patterns among men and women. Understanding these differences is important to plan gender based intervention strategies in order to ensure that people living with HIV have a better quality of life, addressing their sexual concerns both within and outside of marriage. The findings will also help in advocacy and prevention programmes aimed at HIV/AIDS control.

Although a plethora of molecules have been implicated in the development of HIV associated dementia (HAD), the identity of the indispensable ones is still elusive. The action of various molecules appears to follow a cascade path with one molecule activating another thereby regulating the expression and modulation of the regulatory machineries. Two pathways have been proposed leading to HIV-induced central nervous system (CNS) injury. First involving neurotoxic effect of ...

CONCLUSION: The findings of the study suggest that both HIV and TB act synergistically to activate the host immune system. None of the markers were specific enough to be used to assess cure of TB.

CONCLUSION: SNaPshot method for TPMT polymorphism analysis works faster with the potential for high throughput. By simultaneously interrogating the genotype at multiple sites, the method can provide future opportunity to multiplex, though multiplexing has not been done in the present analysis. Heterozygosity for TPMT*3C (719 A>G) was detected in 4.1 per cent of the study population and no homozygosity was observed. Our results indicated that TPMT*3C was the most common polymorphism in Indian population, while TPMT3*A, associated with the absence of catalytic activity of TPMT, was very rare.
