Development of an Interprofessional Handoff Assessment for Doctor of Physical Therapy Students
Conclusion: This assessment proved to be simple and reliable to measure IPE handoff communication skills during emergent situations between DPT students and standardized nurses. Thus, this assessment can be used to assess interprofessional handoffs, develop competencies improved teamwork, and reduce medical errors. (Source: The Journal of Acute Care Physical Therapy)

Concurrent Validity Between the AM-PAC “6-Clicks” Basic Mobility Short Form and the WeeFIM in the Pediatric Acute Care Population
Purpose: To evaluate concurrent validity between the Activity Measure for Post-Acute Care (AM-PAC) “6-clicks” basic mobility short form (BMSF) and the Functional Independence Measure for Children (WeeFIM) and the interrater reliability for the AM-PAC BMSF for pediatric patients in the acute care setting. Methods: In this prospective, cross-sectional study, study participants completed the AM-PAC BMSF and the mobility domains of the WeeFIM. One therapist recorded scores for each of the outcome measures, while a second blinded therapist recorded scores for the AM-PAC BMSF. Spearman correlation coefficients (rs...

A Novel Mobilization Criteria Checklist 12 to 24 Hours After Intravenous Thrombolysis in Acute Ischemic Stroke
This study describes the development and utilization of a novel mobilization criteria checklist that can guide clinical decision making to safely initiate very early mobilization for patients with acute ischemic stroke within 12 to 24 hours after intravenous (IV) thrombolysis. Methods: The evidence was examined, and risk factors for hemorrhagic transformation and considerations for initiating or terminating mobility within the first 12 to 24 hours were identified. The information was formatted into a mobilization criteria checklist for use in a case study 12 to 24 hours after tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), an I...

Uninterrupted Actigraphy Recording to Quantify Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviors in Mechanically Ventilated Adults: A Feasibility Prospective Observational Study
Conclusions: Quantifying PA levels with continuous monitoring through actigraphy is feasible, demonstrating prolonged periods of inactivity/SB. This study highlights that uninterrupted actigraphy could contribute to pursuing the optimal dose and the intervention fidelity of the ICU mobilization in the subsequent clinical trials. Physical Therapists: The Missing Link to Safe Care Transitions From the Acute Care Setting
Background: The physical therapist's (PT's) role on the interprofessional team is specialized to address a patient's functional needs. Statement of the Problem: Functional status is a key determinant for rehospitalization and is associated with the greatest risk of readmission, yet typical discharge planning teams do not include the PT as an integral member of the team. When PTs are involved, the likelihood of rehospitalization is much lower. The PT has an essential role in the discharge process to align the patient's capacity with the community resources that will best achieve a safe transition plan, facilitate...

Perception and Utilization of Standardized Outcome Measures in Acute Care Physical Therapy: An Analysis of Practice
Conclusions: Most acute care PTs reported using OMs, although a higher frequency was observed in those with a clinical specialty. This study presents opportunities to provide knowledge translation and resources to combat barriers to OM use in the acute care setting. (Source: The Journal of Acute Care Physical Therapy)

Characteristics of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Education Vary in Entry-Level Doctor of Physical Therapy Programs: Results of a National Survey
Background/Purpose: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) with high risks of mismanagement is being used more frequently in critical care for cardiorespiratory failure. The safety and feasibility of physical therapy (PT) for patients on ECMO have been established. Little is known about ECMO education and training for entry-level physical therapist students. The purpose of this study is to determine the characteristics of ECMO education in entry-level doctor of physical therapy (DPT) educational programs and examine any correlations among these characteristics. Methods: A survey was developed on the basis of...

The Role of Physical Therapy Following CAR T-Cell Therapy: A Case Report
Conclusion: Physical therapists need to understand and recognize the range of side effects that can occur following CAR T-cell therapy. As more patients receive CAR T-cell therapy to treat malignancies, acute care oncology units will undoubtedly be challenged with patients exhibiting severe side effects. Physical therapists are well trained to address physical impairments resulting from CAR T-cell therapy's side effects and will play a vital role in these patients' interdisciplinary care. Functional Improvement During Prolonged Hospitalization in a Patient With Acute Myeloid Leukemia Utilizing Physical and Occupational Therapy Comanagement: A Case Report
Discussion: The use of both cotreatment and individual therapy sessions may be beneficial for individuals with cancer at different stages of functional recovery in the acute care setting. Cotreatment therapy sessions were used in this case when both OT and PT providers could address their different therapy goals during the same treatment session. The patient in this case report initially required total assistance for functional mobility and activity and achieved near-full independence at hospital discharge. Troponin Elevation Following Percutaneous Coronary Intervention in Acute Coronary Syndrome: Clinical Decision-Making for Early Mobility
Conclusion: The clinical value and utility of postprocedural cTn levels in individuals with ACS following PCI is to help understand prognosis and mortality but does not provide sufficient information about the safety of initiating early mobility following PCI. Decisions for initiation of early mobility in this population using the proposed evidence-supported algorithm may help avoid unnecessary prolongation of bed rest. Two Balance Measures as Poststroke Predictors of Ambulation Status at Discharge From Inpatient Rehabilitation
This study aimed to (1) determine whether the Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke (PASS) and the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) can predict an individual's IRF discharge poststroke gait category and (2) establish cut-off scores for these assessments to better forecast gait category upon discharge. Methods: A total of 180 individuals with an admitting stroke diagnosis were assessed with both balance measures and the 10-m walking test at admission and discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. Participants were stratified by gait speed into 4 groups (nonambulators: 0 m/s; household ambulators: 0.8 m/s). Results: Both ...

Increasing Functional Measurement Tool Utilization by Acute Physical Therapists
Conclusions: Accurate discovery of the primary and secondary factors impacting tool use with targeted interventions yielded a 7.5-fold improvement (from 12% to 89.5%) in performance and documentation of functional measurement tools during PT evaluation and reevaluation sessions in the acute care setting. The project also highlighted limitations of education alone in effectively promoting adherence to best practice standards. The increased utilization and documentation of functional measurement tools has improved PT practice in this academic medical center through more objective detection of functional changes across th...
