The burden of headache disorders in the adult general population of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: estimates from a cross-sectional population-based study including a health-care needs assessment
ConclusionA very high symptom burden is associated with a commensurately high burden of impaired participation. The economic cost appears to be enormous. Over a third of the adult population are revealed to require headache-related health care on the basis of being likely to benefit, demanding highly efficient organization of care. Health-related quality of life, work ability and disability among individuals with persistent post-dural puncture headache
ConclusionThis study stresses the burden of pPDPH in terms of substantial disability, limited quality of life, mental health concerns, and significant impact on the ability to work. The study highlights the long-term impact of pPDPH on individuals, emphasizing the need for timely diagnosis and effective treatment. It underscores the complexity of managing pPDPH and calls for further research into its long-term effects on patient health and HRQoL. (Source: The Journal of Headache and Pain)

Female-selective mechanisms promoting migraine
AbstractSexual dimorphism has been revealed for many neurological disorders including chronic pain. Prelicinal studies and post-mortem analyses from male and female human donors reveal sexual dimorphism of nociceptors at transcript, protein and functional levels suggesting different mechanisms that may promote pain in men and women. Migraine is a common female-prevalent neurological disorder that is characterized by painful and debilitating headache. Prolactin is a neurohormone that circulates at higher levels in females and that has been implicated clinically in migraine. Prolactin sensitizes sensory neurons from female m...

Unsatisfactory response to acute medications does not affect the medication overuse headache development in pediatric chronic migraine
ConclusionsDespite the high prevalence of unresponsiveness to acute therapies in pediatric CM, it does not act as a protective factor for MOH. Moreover, responsiveness to acute drugs is improved by pharmacological preventive treatment and it is not affected by concomitant psychiatric comorbidities. (Source: The Journal of Headache and Pain)

Trends and prescribing patterns of antimigraine medicines in nine major cities in China from 2018 to 2022: a retrospective prescription analysis
ConclusionsMigraine treatment gradually converges toward evidence-based and guideline-recommended treatment. Attention should be given to opioid prescribing, weak evidence-based antidepressant use, and medication overuse in migraine treatment. (Source: The Journal of Headache and Pain)

Healthcare utilisation and economic burden of migraines among bank employees in China: a probabilistic modelling study
ConclusionsThe study points to the need to raise awareness of migraines across all stakeholders and to improve the organisation of the migraine care system. A substantial economic burden of migraines on the healthcare system, employers, and society at large was highlighted. These cost estimates offer evidence-based benchmarks for assessing economic savings from improved migraine management, and can also draw the attention of Chinese policymakers to prioritise migraine policies within the banking and other office-based occupations. An economic evaluation of eptinezumab for the preventive treatment of migraine in the UK, with consideration for natural history and work productivity
ConclusionsThis economic evaluation shows that from a societal perspective, eptinezumab is a cost-effective treatment in patients with  ≥ 4 migraine days per month and for whom ≥ 3 other preventive migraine treatments have failed.Trial registrationN/A.Graphical Abstract (Source: The Journal of Headache and Pain)

Dynamic fluctuations of salivary CGRP levels during migraine attacks: association with clinical variables and phenotypic characterization
ConclusionsOur study underscores the dynamic nature of migraine at a molecular level and emphasizes the importance of integrating clinical variables, such as depressive symptoms, in understanding its pathophysiology. The identification of distinct migraine subtypes based on CGRP dependence suggests potential opportunities for personalized treatment approaches. (Source: The Journal of Headache and Pain)

Effects of PDE-3 inhibition in persistent post-traumatic headache: evidence of cAMP-dependent signaling
ConclusionsOur results provide novel evidence showing that PDE-3 inhibition can elicit migraine-like headache in persons with PPTH. Given that PDE-3 inhibition increases intracellular cAMP levels, our findings allude to the potential therapeutic value of targeting cAMP-dependent signaling pathways in the management of PPTH. Further investigations are imperative to substantiate these insights and delineate the importance of cAMP-dependent signaling pathways in the neurobiologic mechanisms underlying PPTH.ClinicalTrials.gov IdentifierNCT05595993. Photophobia is associated with lower sleep quality in individuals with migraine: results from the American Registry for Migraine Research (ARMR)
ConclusionResults suggest that photophobia is a significant predictor of poor sleep quality and sleep disturbances in migraine. These results underscore the necessity for comprehensive and systematic investigations into the intricate interplay between photophobia and sleep to enhance our understanding and develop tailored solutions for individuals with migraine. Reconceptualizing autonomic function testing in migraine: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsInterictal ANS dysfunction can be identified in migraine patients when compared to healthy controls. These findings indicate the importance to evaluate ANS function in migraine patients - especially, as migraine-specific prophylactic therapies (such as anti-calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) antibodies) may affect the function of the ANS. Alterations of the alpha rhythm in visual snow syndrome: a case-control study
ConclusionsOur main finding was a decreased power spectral density in the alpha band over parietal and temporal brain regions corresponding to areas of the secondary visual cortex. These findings complement previous functional and structural imaging data at a electrophysiological level. They underscore the involvement of higher-order visual brain areas, and potentially reflect a disturbance in inhibitory top-down modulation. The alpha rhythm alterations might represent a novel target for specific neuromodulation.Trial registrationwe preregistered the study before preprocessing and data analysis on the platform osf.org (DOI...

The prevalence and demographic associations of headache in the adult population of Benin: a cross-sectional population-based study
ConclusionsOverall, these findings are evidence that headache disorders are very common in Benin, a low-income country. The prevalence of pMOH, well above the estimated global mean of 1 –2%, is evidence that poverty is not a bar to medication overuse. The findings are very much the same as those in a similar study in its near neighbour, Cameroon. With regard to migraine, they are reasonably in accord with two of three earlier studies in selected Beninese populations, which did no t take account of probable migraine. This study adds to the hitherto limited knowledge of headache in SSA. (Source: The Journal of Headache and Pain)
