Capgras Syndrome: In the Conscious and the Unconscious Mind: A Case Report
We report the successful psychotherapy and medical treatment of a patient with an atypical presentation of Capgras syndrome, in which the patient not only believed that his parents were impostors but also believed that the entirety of what others would consider consensual reality was in fact an impostor. He insisted that a complex delusional world in which he wished to reside was authentic reality. His delusions of misidentification waxed and waned in response to discernable social stressors, and at times, he seemed to have conscious insight into the delusional nature of his beliefs. This case raises questions about whethe...

A Case Report of Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Illness Anxiety Disorder: Perspectives From: DSM-5: and: ICD-11
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a mental illness currently classified as part of the “Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders” (OCRD) chapter in both the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) and in the ICD-11. This is not the case for illness anxiety disorder/hypochondriasis (IAD/HC), as IAD is classified in the chapter “Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders” in DSM-5, and in ICD-11, under the name HC, it is classified along with BDD in the OCRD chapter. Instagram Use and Mental Well-Being: The Mediating Role of Social Comparison
This study explores the relationship between time spent on Instagram and depressive symptoms, self-esteem, and disordered eating attitudes in a nonclinical sample of female Instagram users aged 18–35 years. In addition, it explores the mediating role of social comparison. A total of 1172 subjects completed a one-time-only online survey. Three different mediation analyses were performed to test the hypotheses that social comparison on Instagram mediates the association time spent on Instagram with depressive symptoms (model 1), self-esteem (model 2), and disordered eating attitudes (model 3). All three models showed that ...

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Metabolic Disorders: Overview and Future Perspective
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has a bidirectional relationship with metabolic disorders. The purposes of this review are to decipher the links between OCD and metabolic disorders and to explore the etiological mechanism of OCD in metabolism, which may aid in early identification of and tailored interventions for OCD and metabolic disorders. Trait Versus State Predictors of Emotional Distress Symptoms: The Role of the Big-5 Personality Traits, Metacognitive Beliefs, and Strategies
To enhance formulation and interventions for emotional distress symptoms, research should aim to identify factors that contribute to distress and disorder. One way to formulate emotional distress symptoms is to view them as state manifestations of underlying personality traits. However, the metacognitive model suggests that emotional distress is maintained by metacognitive strategies directed by underlying metacognitive beliefs. The aim of the present study was therefore to evaluate the role of these factors as predictors of anxiety and depression symptoms in a cross-sectional sample of 4936 participants collected during t...

A Survey of the Relationship Between Trait Anxiety and Mental Resilience of Marathoners in China
This study aims to investigate the relationship between trait anxiety and mental resilience in marathoners and the general population. The study recruited 135 marathoners and 140 members of the general population. Trait anxiety and mental resilience were measured by the State-Trait Anxiety Scale and the Chinese version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. The amount of weekly exercise resulted in significant differences in the trait anxiety (F = 6.358, p (Source: The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease)

Eating Habits and Eating Disorder Associated Behavior in Bipolar Disorder
A relevant comorbidity of bipolar disorder (BD) is eating disorders (EDs). Crossed vulnerability factors as eating disorder–specific symptoms (EDSSs) may trigger the onset of both disorders in either direction. The Structured Inventory for Anorexic and Bulimic Eating Disorders for Self-Report was used to examine the occurrence of EDs in euthymic/subsyndromal individuals with BD (n = 86) and healthy controls (n = 86) matched for age and sex. Furthermore, we explored EDSSs with the subscales “general psychopathology and social integration,” “bulimic symptoms,” “body image and slimness ideal,” “sexuality and b...

COVID-19 Survivors' Intensive Care Unit Experiences and Their Possible Effects on Mental Health: A Qualitative Study
It is known that being hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) for any reason is a risk factor for future psychiatric problems. This qualitative study aims to identify the experiences of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) ICU survivors and provide insights for relevant mental health problems after being discharged. Participants were COVID-19 patients discharged from ICUs of a secondary care hospital. The experiences of 21 ICU survivors were evaluated using Colaizzi's 7-step approach, which were determined by the purposeful sampling method. There were three themes generated from the interviews as “emotions on COVID...

Stuck Inside: How Social Functioning in Schizophrenia Changed During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Social distancing policies enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic altered our social interactions. People with schizophrenia, who already exhibit social deficits, may have been disproportionally impacted. In this pilot study, we a) compared prepandemic social functioning to functioning during the pandemic in people with schizophrenia (n = 21) who had data at both time points; and b) examined if patterns of decline in schizophrenia differed from healthy controls (n = 21) across a series of repeated-measures analyses of variance. We observed larger declines in social functioning in schizophrenia (η2 = 0.07, medium effect size...

SARS-CoV–Related Pandemic Outbreaks and Mental Disorder Risk
This study aimed to quantify the association between exposure to pandemic outbreaks and psychological health via a comprehensive meta-analysis. Literature retrieval, study selection, and data extraction were completed independently and in duplicate. Effect-size estimates were expressed as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Data from 22 articles, involving 40,900 persons, were meta-analyzed. Overall analyses revealed a significant association of exposing to SARS-CoV–related pandemics with human mental health (OR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.24–1.40; p (Source: The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease)

Hermann Rorschach’s (1884–1922) Clinical and Scientific Work as a Psychiatrist in Russia
This article examines an insufficiently studied period of Rorschach's work in Russia in 1913–1914 and aims to reconstruct his clinical and scientific activities at that time. Rorschach worked in the psychoneurological sanatorium in Kryukovo near Moscow where he treated his patients with psychotherapy. During that period, he came in contact with leading psychiatrists and became a part of the Russian psychoanalytic community. Case histories of Rorschach's patients did not reveal any original approaches in his psychotherapeutic methods. Despite his lack of time for scientific work, he still coedited one of the leading psych...

The Mental and Physical Health Impacts of Overturning Roe v Wade
The overturning of Roe v Wade has resulted in the loss of reproductive rights for millions of women in the United States. It has also put these women at risk of severe mental and physical health consequences. When legal abortions are restricted, there is a rise in illegal abortion with the risk of hemorrhage, infection, infertility, and death. There are many more risks of carrying a pregnancy to term than health or psychological risks of a legal abortion. Women who have a miscarriage risk having to prove they did not abort. In cases of medical emergencies, doctors may be restricted from performing life-saving abortions for...
