Frontline worker perceptions of medication safety in India
Conclusions: Immediate interventions to improve medication safety include enforcement of legible/printed medical orders in generic names, workforce development, developing standard protocols, and a corresponding change in organizational culture. Accreditation can serve as a driver for improving patient safety. (Source: Therapeutic Advances in Drug Safety)

Rifampicin and isoniazid plasma concentrations in relation to adverse reactions in tuberculosis patients: a retrospective analysis
Conclusions: High INH concentrations were common in patients with and without ADRs whereas RMP concentrations were low or within the normal range in most patients. Further studies are required to assess the association between high INH concentrations and the occurrence of ADRs. (Source: Therapeutic Advances in Drug Safety)

Anticholinergic medication use and dementia: latest evidence and clinical implications
In conclusion, there is evidence from three observational studies suggesting that anticholinergic medications may increase dementia risk. Given this potential risk and the myriad of other well-known adverse effects (i.e. constipation, blurred vision, urinary retention, and delirium) associated with anticholinergic medications, it is prudent for prescribers and older adults to minimize use of these medications and consider alternatives when possible. Mirabegron in overactive bladder patients: efficacy review and update on drug safety
Overactive bladder is a common condition, which significantly affects people’s quality of life. The use of anticholinergic medication has been the mainstay of managing overactive bladder when conservative measures are not enough. Many patients stop anticholinergic medication because of the side effects and more recently the concerns about the effect of an anticholinergic burden and the development of dementia have been studied. Activation of β3 adrenoceptors has been shown to relax the detrusor muscle and subsequently lead to the development of the first β3 adrenoceptor agonist. Mirabegron is the first drug...

Observed medical and surgical complications of prolonged barbiturate coma for refractory status epilepticus
Conclusions: This study highlights the high morbidity in patients with refractory status epilepticus requiring pentobarbital coma. Anticipating and addressing the indirect and direct complications in prolonged pentobarbital coma may improve survival and functional outcomes in patients with refractory status epilepticus. Temporal trends in the use of antidiabetic medicines: a nationwide 9-year study in older people living in New Zealand
Conclusion: This population-level study showed an increase in utilization of antidiabetic medicines in older people in NZ from 2005 to 2013; however, the increase does not seem to parallel the proportional increase in prevalence of diabetes for the study period. Improving access to newer antidiabetic medicines in line with emerging evidence should be a consideration for decision makers. (Source: Therapeutic Advances in Drug Safety)

Nonmedical prescribing: where are we now?
Nonmedical prescribing has been allowed in the United Kingdom (UK) since 1992. Its development over the past 24 years has been marked by changes in legislation, enabling the progression towards independent prescribing for nurses, pharmacists and a range of allied health professionals. Although the UK has led the way regarding the introduction of nonmedical prescribing, it is now seen in a number of other Western-European and Anglophone countries although the models of application vary widely between countries. The programme of study to become a nonmedical prescriber (NMP) within the UK is rigorous, and involves a combinati...

Making rational choices about how best to support consumers use of medicines: a perspective review
Inappropriate medicine use and polypharmacy create significant challenges for consumers and the health systems they live in, worldwide. In this review, we describe the evidence underpinning interventions directed primarily at healthcare consumers, including information provision, pharmacist-delivered interventions and practical supports, such as reminders to improve outcomes related to medicines. We identify a relatively small number of strategies that seem effective or promising: self-monitoring and self-management programmes, simplified dosing regimens and pharmacist-delivered interventions such as medication review. The...

Medication-overuse headache: a perspective review
Medication-overuse headache (MOH) is a debilitating condition in which frequent and prolonged use of medication for the acute treatment of pain results in the worsening of the headache. The purpose of this paper is to review the most recent literature on MOH and discuss future avenues for research. MOH accounts for a substantial share of the global burden of disease. Prevalence is often reported as 1–2% but can be as high as 7% overall, with higher proportions among women and in those with a low socioeconomic position. Management consists of withdrawing pain medication, focusing on prophylactic and nonmedical treatme...
