Analysis of Serum Pro-Inflammatory Cytokine Levels after Rat Spinal Cord Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury and Correlation with Tissue Damage.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSION: Inflammation is a plausible pathway in spinal cord ishemia/reperfusion injury. However clinical treatment of the damage does not currently include antiinflammatory therapy. The results of our study supported the hypothesis that inflammatory responses could play a possible role in the ischemia/reperfusion injury of the spinal cord. Characterization of the role of inflammation in the etiopathogenesis of ischemia/reperfusion injury to the spinal cord is important to facilitate the development of novel therapeutic approaches for prevention and/or treatment of this severe condition. Neuroproctective effects of ischemic tolerance (preconditioning) and postconditioning.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Elucidation of the endogenous cell survival pathways involved in ischemic tolerance (preconditioning) and postconditioning has significant clinical implications for preventing neuronal damage in susceptible patients. Ischemic tolerance is a phenomenon in which the brain protects itself against future injury by adapting to low doses of noxious insults. Ischemic postconditioning is defined as brief periods of reperfusion alternating with re-occlusion applied during the very early minutes of reperfusion that mechanically alters the hydrodynamics of reperfusion. Similar pathways and molecules play a role in pre-and postcon...

Achieving complete resolution of spinal hydatid cyst disease is quite challenging when bone is involved. Many authors reported the poor outcome of posterior decompression and laminectomy for intraosseous spinal hydatid disease. In an attempt to avoid a similar poor outcome, hydatid cysts were reached via both anterior and posterior surgical approaches in our patient. A 73-year-old man presented with complaints of low back and right leg pain. Symptoms or signs of systemic hydatid cyst disease were absent. MRI demonstrated a cystic lesion in the presacral/retroperitoneal region, involving the body of the sacrum and sacra...

It is important to identify the functional activation of SMA in terms of planning the surgical strategy. Our unpublished data from M.D. Anderson suggest that resection of the site of SMA activation based on fMRI is an important parameter for predicting the postoperative neurological deficit. Also, protecting the functional SMA during tumor resection may prevent post-operative deficit. Choroid Plexus Papillomas in two Siblings: Case Report.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
We report three lateral ventricle CPPs in two siblings, at the age of 7 month and 2 years respectively. All tumors were resected with parietotemporal craniotomy and a superior temporal sulcus approach to the lateral ventricle. To avoid a concomitant need of ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion, external ventricular drainage was inserted for a week in the postoperative period relieving symptoms of hydrocephalus. Search for a hereditary defect in the p53 gene of the second infant (7 months old) revealed no mutation. Postoperative courses were uneventful and the patients were followed for three years without any recurrence. B...

Pure ventral midline long segment schwannoma of the cervicodorsal spine: a case report.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Spinal intradural extramedullary schwannomas commonly occur posterolateral or anterolateral to the spinal cord. A case of a pure midline ventrally situated cervicodorsal extramedullary schwannoma in a 33-year-old female patient with subacute cord compression and sphincteric involvement is presented. Spinal MR imaging showed a C2-D3 midline ventrally situated extramedullary tumor with severe spinal cord compression. It was resected through a posterolateral approach. Histology was consistent with a schwannoma. There was a gradual improvement in left-sided spasticity but the patient had mild diaphragmatic paresis. MR imag...

The Executive Committee of the Neurosurgical Society that functioned during 1988-1990 period under the leadership of Dr's Tunçalp Ozgen and Yücel Kanpolat realized many major accomplishments. Each of these senior neurosurgeons served as presidents of the Society for one year. Dr. Nur Altinörs was the General Secretary while Dr. Kemali Baykaner served as the associate secretary and Dr. Nuri Arda served as the treasurer thus composing the Executive Committee. The most important project was to receive the right to add "Turkish" to the title of the society. This required a long and tiresome formal process an...

Replacement of Vertebral Lamina (Laminoplasty) in Surgery for Lumbar Isthmic Spondylolisthesis. A Prospective Clinical Study.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSION: The laminoplasty technique is a method which presents advantages in isthmic spondylolisthesis cases such as short duration of operation, absence of graft donor site complications, preservation of the osteoligamentous structures of the posterior column and a high probability of achievement of fusion through only a posterior approach at a single session; therefore, we believe it is an alternative surgical technique. Total Disc Replacement in the Treatment of Lumbar Discogenic Pain with Disc Herniation: A Prospective Clinical Study.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: Results from this series are promising and indicate that placement of TDR for degenerative disc disease with lumbar disc herniation is a valuable alternative to conventional techniques. The main advantages of this application are preservation of spinal stability, early mobilization, restoration of normal segmental range of motion and elimination of problems related to intervertebral disc tissue such as discogenic pain and recurrence of disc herniation. Supratentorial High Grade Astroblastoma: Report of two Cases and Review of the Literature.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
In this report, the authors present two cases of high grade intracerebral astroblastomas. Both tumors occurred in children as supratentorial, well-circumscribed, peripheral masses. The lesions differed radigraphically; one contained a huge cystic component and heterogeneously enhancing mural nodule while the other appeared as a prominently contrastenhancing solid mass lesion. Both patients were treated with surgery and postoperative radiotherapy. They were followed-up long-term and no recurrence of the tumor was detected in either case. We also discussed the radiological and histological characteristics with prognostic fea...

Circumferential Total Resection of Cervical Tumors: Report of Two Consecutive Cases and Technical Note.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
To date, few studies have addressed the subaxial vertebrectomy technique and related anatomical landmarks in this method. Total spondylectomy is performed via piecemeal resection or en bloc removal in a one-stage procedure associated with stabilizing the spine and preserving neurological status. In this presentation, a circumferential total cervical tumor resection for subaxial cervical spine lesions was described. Two cases of subaxial cervical malignancy, one with primary C3 chondrosarcoma and the other with C4 lung adenosarcoma metastasis, were both treated by the anterior-posterior approach. The lesions could be re...
