Two scientific publishers have announced special tributes to Charles Darwin, on this 150th anniversary of the publication of his seminal work, On the Origin of Species, and the 200th year of Darwin’s birth. The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) is offering open access to two peer-reviewed articles in BioScience, and Springer is providing limited free access to a special issue of Naturwissenshaften.

Registration is now open for the Medical Film Symposium, a four day event that will take place in Philadelphia, PA from January 20th-23rd, 2010.
The symposium will examine the history, aesthetics, ethics and preservation of medical film production and exhibition, with one full day of presentations at the Mutter Museum and four evenings of film screenings at venues around Philadelphia, including the historic surgical amphitheater at the Pennsylvania Hospital.

The Presidents of 57 liberal arts colleges in the U.S., representing 22 states, have declared their support for the Federal Research Public Access Act (S. 1373) in an Open Letter released on September 23rd. The American Chemical Society (ACS) has announced that recordings of more than 150 presentations from its 238th National Meeting (August 2009) are now available online without charge. The sessions are available online at http://www.softconference.com/ACSchem/am.asp.
The Society began releasing presentation recordings in a small way with its spring 2009 meeting, and hopes to continue to build the program to include most of the presentations delivered at future meetings.

PubMed Central Adds Search for Embargoed Articles

The NIH requires articles that have been supported by NIH funding to be deposited to PubMed Central (PMC), and requires researchers to provide each article’s ID number assigned by PMC on all grant reports and subsequent grant applications. But many articles are embargoed for months after they are deposited (because of publisher requirements), and not available for public view. Finding numbers for them has been a problem.
Now PubMedCentral has made it easy to look up PMCID numbers for ALL deposited articles, including the embargoed ones.

Nature Publishing Group (NPG) and the Associazione Differenziamento e Morte Cellulare (ADMC) are soliciting manuscripts for their new journal: Cell Death & Disease. The first issue will be published in January 2010.
Cell Death & Disease is a sister journal to Cell Death & Differentiation, but will explore the more translational area of cell death. Cell Death & Disease will be online only and will make all content freely available to all researchers worldwide. Author fees of $3,000 will be charged per article accepted for publication.

Phishing is a con that attempts to fool you into providing personal information to people who then abuse it.
This one pretends to be an official communication to faculty, from the publishing giant, Elsevier. It may look like the message below.

Comprehensive funding information for NIH grants and contracts is now available on the NIH Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool (RePORT) thanks to a new, user-friendly system called the RePORT Expenditures and Results, or RePORTER. Featuring four nights of screenings and one full day of scholarly presentations, the symposium will take place at several arts and medical venues around the city, including the Mütter Museum and Pennsylvania Hospital.
