I understood growing up that trusted people were not inadvertently driving me crazy but were instead devoted to the systematic destruction of my sanity. It wasn’t about their behaviors, though I’d make it a point to avoid a beating by wandering the neighborhood til the lights went out, go home and step over mom on the way to the kitchen, eat a tub of Cool Whip, fall asleep on the couch and wake up with a caregiver’s dick in my mouth. Go down to the basement and burn my cum-stained nightie in the laundrytub, thinking, then head off to school in rumpled overalls and mother’s torn nylons, sleep at my d...

I’ve got a problem. There’s a physician in my town wreaking havoc on the livers of everyone in the entire area. Drug seekers rejoice! If your drug of choice is Fioricet (Butalbital/Acetaminophen/Caffeine), Soma (Carisoprodol), or Ultram (Tramadol) you are in luck. I’m not joking when I say that he has put them in the ground — 6 feet under. He’s got more people addicted to more drugs than should be possible. For many Americans there is an unfortunate notion that our health care is the best in the world, so, when I recently read an article entitled "The Epidemic of Medical Child Abuse, and what can be done", I had to share some statements and comment. Just read the first statement from author, Dana Ullman: The primary purpose of this article is to encourage a stronger commitment from doctors and parents to consider using safer medical care for infants and children FIRST before resorting to more dangerous treatments. I absolutely agree with this statement. It's not to say that there are not medical treatments which are neces...

Recently, I and many others wrote about an Oklahoma abortion law that could potentially seriously compromise the privacy (and safety) of women seeking abortions in that state. At issue is the law’s requirement that that each individual form be posted to a publicly available website. While traditionally identifying information would not be included on the form, public posting is an unnecessary for data collection and analysis and could still jeopardize women’s privacy (see this post for more on why I think that’s the case). The Center for Reproductive Rights has filed a lawsuit challenging the law. Via Wom...

By Patricia McAdams, HBNS Contributing Writer Many U.S. children face a terrible burden of stressors that can harm the development of their brains and nervous systems. These stressors can lead to health problems and diseases throughout their lives, ultimately causing some to die prematurely, according to the lead author of a new study. David W. Brown, DSc, an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and colleagues found that children who were exposed to six or more "adverse childhood experiences" or ACEs were at double the risk of premature death compared to children who had not suffered thes...

We’ve long had a version of these rights here on our website, but I thought it might be helpful to further describe or explain each right in a little more detail. Therapists nowadays may also often offer you their guidelines for electronic and/or outside contact, (such as through Facebook, email, telephone, etc). A new law, HB 1595, is set to take effect that could potentially seriously compromise the privacy (and safety) of women seeking abortions in that state. The law deals in part with collection of data about abortion in the state via an Individual Abortion Form which asks providers a number of questions about the details of the procedure and the woman requesting it. The law requires that the State Department of Health make the form available on its website to abortion providers, and that providers complete a form for each department and submit it to the State Department of Health. This in itself is not so problematic, as man...

Conclusions: Despite the use of validated assessments, our findings are limited by the retrospective and subjective nature of self-report measures used to assess childhood maltreatment. I have to say, I haven’t had time to fully read and digest the Baucus/Senate Finance Committee’s 223-page [PDF] stab at health care reform. Christine had a bit about it at Our Bodies Our Blog on Wednesday, and Raisin Women’s Voices has a list of reasons they believe the bill is not good, especially for women. The New York Times had a piece on the bill “draw[ing] fire on both sides.” Another Times piece indicates that 564 amendments to the bill were filed in the past couple of days. The proposed amendments are currently available here. *** A Harvard public health grad, Mikhaila Richards, has s...

Too many pupils with behavioural problems are being excluded unofficially by heads who can’t deal with them. Parents are often asked to remove their child voluntarily from classes rather than the school imposing a statutory period of expulsion. The illegal practice is blamed for a recent drop in official exclusion figures. Read it here.War on homeschoolers spreading? Whenever a high-profile person dies as a result of abusing prescription drugs, it brings to light how serious the problem really is. To that end, a new study found that overall people are abusing prescription drugs less than the before. I’d like to think that it has something to do with learning from each other. If one person admits that prescription drugs are dangerous, perhaps it will help another person think twice about their use of the product as well. It will also help people become aware of what it means to become addicted. The survey found that 2.5% of Americans (or 6.2 million) said they abused prescription...

By Amy Sutton, HBNS contributing writer On TV, Sex and the City makes regular Cosmo-drinking sessions seem like a glamorous, harmless pastime. In reality, though, excessive alcohol use can relate to overeating and depression in young women, according to the results of a new study. "Anyone who has been touched by depression, obesity or alcoholism knows that these disorders on their own can be devastating. When they're combined, these disorders become more costly, more difficult to treat and more impairing," said Carolyn McCarty, PhD, lead study author and a research associate professor at the University of Washington and Se...

We've all heard about viruses and websites that steal our sensitive private information. Cyberstalking has also become a problem on social media sites. Blogs, Twitter, MySpace and Facebook, in particular, are prone to this sort of abuse. But even cellphone texting can be a problem since you can forward others details where ever you want. Although there are mixed reviews of just how much of a risk there is, there is agreement there is a risk. Parents should certainly provide supervision for their kids with the youngest getting the most. Image by luc legay via FlickrJohn Dvorak, a columnist at MarketWatch.com recently poste...
