Chinese Medicine has been labeled traditional in its external communication since the 1950s. It is widely thought of as a coherent, orthodox medical system that has been handed down to us in pristine and unaltered teachings. However, as Chinese Medicine is going global it is unlike orthodox teachings simultaneously adapting swiftly to local patterns of perception and interpretation, thereby being shaped into hitherto unknown forms. The globalization of Chinese Medicine produces multiple localized visions of a healing system that is permeable to external ideas and influences and very open to individual interpretations. In Ge...

Medical guidelines are intended to guide decisions and criteria regarding diagnosis, management, and treatment. Strategy is to review, summarize and evaluate the best evidence and most current data on prevention, diagnosis, prognosis and therapy. Then the most important questions related to clinical practice are defined and all possible decision options and their outcomes are identified. There are currently about 800 German guidelines available, classified into 3 levels. Only 50 of them are of the highest, the so-called S-3 level, incorporating expert opinion on the basis of current evidence within the paradigm of evidence...

Quantitative sensory testing as a neurobiological tool for measuring “specific” effects of naturopathic reflex therapies in chronic painemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Evidence from recent RCTs has shown that naturopathic reflex therapies such as massage, acupuncture, Gua Sha, cupping, wet packs, etc. are helpful in reducing symptoms of chronic pain . These bodily oriented therapies are likely able to influence chronic pain not only through brain mechanisms, but also at the level of the nociceptor and the spinal cord. However, the neurobiological basis of these effects has rarely been investigated even though the accumulating knowledge of the pathophysiology of chronic pain syndromes allows for specific hypotheses. This study also suggests we are able to deliver convincing acupuncture placebos/controls and that a ‘placebo’ needle (SN) appears as clinically effective as MES. This implies that an enhanced placebo response is not associated with acupuncture needling. This suggests we should consider that the most important factor influencing treatment outcome for pain may be related to the therapist and not the procedure they employ. This hypothesis will require further investigation across a number of different interventions but may be important for pain management. (Source: European Journal of Integrative Medicine)

The Effect on Serotonin and MDA Levels in Depressed Patients with Insomnia when Far-Infrared Rays are Applied to Acupoints.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Little is known about the effect of far-infrared rays (FIR) on serotonin and malondialdehyde levels in depressed patients with insomnia. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of far-infrared rays on depressed people with insomnia. A randomized design was used to determine this effect. A total of 70 inpatients were recruited with the clinical diagnosis of depression with sleep disturbance. In the experimental group, FIR was applied to three chosen acupuncture points by a patch-like sticker for a period of 15 minutes twice a week. The three acupuncture points are Nei-Kuan (PC6), Shenmen (HT7) and Sanyinjiao (...

Update on autism: A review of 1300 reports published in 2008.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
This publication, by reviewing 1300 studies published on autism in 2008, represents an update on this topic. Results include possible parental influences, maternal conditions, and studies on genes and chromosomes. Possible etiological factors involve the "extreme male brain," defects in the mirror neuron system, vaccines, underconnectivity, disorders of central coherence, and many other more specific etiologies. Assessments or tests for autism are also reviewed. Characteristics of autistic individuals include repetitive behavior, language disorders, sleep disturbances, social problems, joint attention disorders, seizur...

Study Suggests That Both Traditional and Simulated Acupuncture Relieve Pain but by Different Mechanismsemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Although acupuncture has long been used to treat pain, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. The process appears to involve the brain's ability to produce opioids (pain-reducing chemicals) that bind to neurons in distinct regions of the brain, and the ability of neurons to produce receptors for these endogenous opioids—specifically, mu-opioid receptors (MORs). Recent clinical trials have indicated that both traditional (actual) and simulated (sham/placebo) acupuncture decrease pain, but other studies have suggested that the neural mechanisms involved may be different. Effect of electro-acupuncture on heart rate variability and gastric emptying in ovariectomized conscious ratemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
To clarify the effects of electro-acupuncture to the hindpaw on menopausal distress, we studied electrocardiography (ECG) recordings for heart rate variability (HRV) analysis and gastric emptying, in ovariectomized conscious rats. Four weeks after ovariectomy, ECG was recorded in 13- and 14-week-old rats for analysis of the heart rate variability. Gastric emptying was measured five weeks after ovariectomy. Electro-acupuncture was done by stimulating bilaterally the ST-36 point once a week from four weeks after ovariectomy. After ovariectomy we detected both a decrease of the heart rate and a decrease of the LF/HF component...

Electrical acupuncture reduces the inhibitory effect of butylscopolamine on gastric motilityemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Electrical acupuncture of lower limb ST36 point reportedly facilitates gastric activity in healthy subjects. We studied the effect of this stimulation on butylscopolamine-induced inhibition of gastric motility in healthy subjects. Physiological post-prandial gastric activity was observed for 30 min after food ingestion (Ensure liquid(tm), 1.5 ml/kg of body weight (BW) and water, 1.5 ml/kg BW) with continuous ultrasonographic recordings (B-mode, 5 MHz convex probe) of the gastric antrum and external electrogastrography (EGG) for 40 min in 10 healthy subjects (control group). Butylscopolamine (4 μg/kg BW) was administ...

Inhibitory regulation of blood pressure by manual acupuncture in the anesthetized ratemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Abstract: Effect of manual acupuncture (twisting; lifting and thrusting; combination of them) at acupoints Nei-guan (PL-6) in the fore limb and Zu-san-li (ST-36) in the hind limb on mean arterial blood pressure was investigated in anesthetized rats. During acupuncture treatment mean arterial blood pressure was decreased but fluctuated in intact rats, intensively decreased after vagotomy and completely abolished after spinalization. The depressor response was significantly higher with combination treatment than others at PL-6, rather than at ST-36. Results suggest that manual acupuncture at either PL-6 or ST-36 can reduce b...
