Does eating liquorice in pregnancy raise the risk of ADHD?
Conclusion This study provides evidence of some link between how much liquorice a pregnant woman eats and earlier puberty in girls, but not boys. It also shows some association between pregnant women eating liquorice and their children scoring lower for intelligence and being more likely to have ADHD. However, this study has some limitations to consider: Glycyrrhizin is found in other food products, such as chewing gum, sweets, cookies, ice creams, herbal teas, and herbal and traditional medicines, as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The amount of these products the women ate was not reported, which means ...

Monarch Becomes the 1st FDA-Cleared Device for ADHD
The Monarch external Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation (eTNS) System made history last week after it became the first device to win a nod from FDA to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It should be noted the technology has had CE mark since 2015. Monarch was developed by NeuroSigma and is indicated to help treat 7 to 12-year-olds suffering from ADHD. What makes this de novo clearance from FDA so significant is that typically pharmaceutical solutions are used to treat patients suffering from the neurological disorder. Monarch is about the size of a cellphone. The device generates a low-level electrical pulse ...

FDA warns Pearson on ADHD device claims
The FDA published a warning letter it sent to NSC Pearson over issues with the company’s Quotient ADHD being marketed as a consumer device to treat ADHD without the proper clearance. Pearson’s system, originally named the OPTAx system, was cleared with indications for use “as a device that provides clinicians with objective measurements of hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention to aid in the clinical assessment of ADHD,” according to the federal watchdog. The Quotient system is a device that measures 3 indicators of ADHD, according to the company’s site, which calls it an “easy-to-a...

Sleep and Mental Health Disorders
Sleep is essential to the maintenance of mental health. Sleep helps to regulate mood and process emotional information and experiences into memory. Insufficient sleep is associated with increased emotional reactivity and emotional disturbance. Research indicates that REM sleep may play an especially significant role in maintaining emotional well-being and psychological balance. Sleep problems occur substantially more frequently in people with psychiatric conditions than in the general population. Often, sleep and mental health disorders exist in bi-directional relationship to each other, with each condition influencing the...

The Dark side of ADHD in my marriage
ADHD goes hand in hand with many definitions: lazy, excitable, overstimulated. I've heard these and many more. And I'm sure that in many ways these describe it perfectly. But there's a darker side to having ADHD. One in which you can't comprehend unless it's you or your married to it. That place where all the medication and therapy still simply can't reach. There are funny parts for sure. I laugh and joke with my partner about them in some ways. Often to ease the tension and strain I know it puts on our marriage; or to hope he sees it in the colour of humour vs hurt and exhaustion. It's like a super thrill ride of a roll...
