The Bond Market Can “Fight the Fed” (And Sometimes Win)
Alan ReynoldsA favoriteWall Street Journal columnist,James Mackintosh, quotes an economist saying that because the price ‐earnings ratio for stocks rises when bond yields fall, “The most capitalist valuation metric in the world, the P/E of the S&P 500, is now just completely dominated by monetary policy. ”That would make sense if increases in the Fed ’s policy rates were matched by increases in 10‐year bond yields. On the contrary, bond yields have instead fallen from 3.49% on June 14 when the fed funds rate was 0.33 to 2.78% on August 10 when the funds rate has risen to 2.32%.The red line in the graph ...

Reforming the Organ Donation System
David Kemp andPeter Van DorenThe Washington Postrecently reported on the logistic and technological failings of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the private non ‐profit agency with a government ‐enforced monopoly on the United States’ system of procuring organ donations and matching donated organs to the over 100,000 people waiting for them. A report from the White House US Digital Service found that UNOS has been ineffective, lacks transparency, and relies on outdated software, with frequent system failures and cybersecurity concerns. While UNOS has resisted efforts to modernize and refor...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
August 04, 2022 Edition-----The war seems to grind on sadly and Pres. Biden is having a second round with COVID as unprecedented weather happens all over the US. It all feels rather like ‘the end of days’!In the UK we see an increasing chance of a third female PM being elected as the country seems to be struggling. We do need to remember however the UK remains a significant power with nuclear weapons and home-grown nuclear submarines! In OZ we have had last week working out how to progress the First Nations ‘Voice’ as we wrap up the 1st session of Parliament for the new Government. Comments welcome on how you think ...
