Conclusions: Based on the analysis of MSHQ scores before and after alfuzosin treatment, improvement was significant on ejaculatory function, in addition to improvement on LUTS and quality of life. MSHQ is a useful tool to evaluate the male sexual dysfunction. (Source: International Journal of Clinical Practice)

In all, 5999 sexually active men with LUTS completed the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) which rates LUTS severity, and the MSHQ long-form, which evaluates seven EjD symptoms and bother due to EjD. Concomitant intake of medical treatments for BPH and previous BPH-related surgery were collected. The impact of...

Conclusions: We propose that ARBs and ARIs have distinct clinical effects and, hence, should be considered for distinct groups of LUTS/BPH patients based on specific treatment goals in a given patient.Take Home Message: While both α-blockers and 5α-reductase inhibitors can reduce male lower urinary tract symptoms and prevent disease progression, their effects differ quantitatively and qualitatively, depending on the end point being studied. Combination treatment is primarily useful to prevent disease progression. (Source: European Urology Supplements)

In this study we test whether functional screening of compounds to adrenergic G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) would provide data that correlated significantly with radiolabeled binding data, thereby permitting researchers to replace expensive radioligand-binding experiments with non-radioactive screening. An increase in intracellular calcium levels represents an important second messenger signal for several recombinant GPCRs. In this study, we describe the affinities of three alpha adrenoceptor antagonists (terazosin, tamsulosin and alfuzosin), determined by monitoring the changes in intracellular calcium levels and co...

A commonly-prescribed drug for men suffering from a painful pelvic condition failed to significantly reduce patients' symptoms in an international study led by Queen's University professor and urologist at Kingston General Hospital, Curtis Nickel. The drug, called Alfuzosin, is regularly prescribed by more than half of family doctors to treat chronic prostititis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome. In this multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, treatment with the alpha-adrenergic receptor blocker alfuzosin (as compared with placebo) did not reduce symptoms in men who had received a diagnosis of chronic prostatitis-chronic pelvic pain syndrome in the preceding 2 years and who had not previously been treated with an alpha-adrenergic receptor blocker.
