During the next decade, a rapid increase in the number of new cancer diagnoses in the population as well as a growing number of cancer survivors can be expected. Cancer is anticipated to exceed cardiovascular disease as the primary cause of mortality in the United States population. Despite efforts in tobacco control, the aging of the population and obesity epidemic will contribute toward the increasing incidence of cancer. Although oncology specialists will continue to play a critical role in the diagnosis and initial treatment of patients with cancer, primary care providers will need to play an expanding role in the ...

The objective was to determine whether antimullerian hormone (AMH) and inhibin B are such biomarkers. The authors tested whether AMH and inhibin B were impacted by breast cancer treatment by comparing cancer survivors to age-matched control women and determined the association between these hormones and postchemotherapy menstrual pattern.Breast cancer patients (n = 127) with American Joint Committee on Cancer stage I to III disease who were premenopausal at diagnosis were enrolled postchemotherapy and observed. The primary endpoint was chemotherapy-related amenorrhea (CRA) ([ge]12 months of amenorrhea after chemotherapy). ...

Conclusions:
Our study identified differences in body composition but not in dietary habits between HA and PCOS infertile women. We documented, for the first time, a relationship between the accuracy of dietary surveys and the psychological characteristics of subjects with anovulation. This finding suggests that it may be important to be aware of the psychological terrain when planning a dietary survey in infertile women. (Source: Nutrition Journal)

Opioid abuse has increased in the last decade, primarily as a result of increased access to prescription opioids. Physicians are also increasingly administering opioid analgesics for noncancer chronic pain. Thus, knowledge of the long-term consequences of opioid use/abuse has important implications for fully evaluating the clinical usefulness of opioid medications. Many studies have examined the effect of opioids on the endocrine system; however, a systematic review of the endocrine actions of opioids in both humans and animals has, to our knowledge, not been published since 1984. Thus, we reviewed the literature on th...

Abstract Mitoxantrone (MTX) is a synthetic antineoplastic cytotoxic drug, active both on proliferative and non-proliferative cells.
The efficacy of MTX has been suggested by many open-label or observational studies and demonstrated in four randomized controlled
clinical trials (RCTs). It is indicated for reducing neurological disability and the frequency of clinical relapses in patients
with progressive relapsing and worsening relapsing–remitting MS patients. The short-term most frequent adverse events observed
in RCTs have been nausea/vomiting, alopecia, an increased risk of urinary and respiratory tract ...

Conclusions: Hydrothermablation performed in the medical office using local anesthesia seems to be a safe, effective, and cost-saving procedure for treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding in women with both normal and myomatous uteri. Although the success rate in patients with normal cavities was higher than that achieved in patients with submucous myomas, hysterectomy because of abnormal bleeding related to myomas was avoided in 88.4% of the group with myomas. Conclusion: We report the first study of CNV analysis in a large cohort of Caucasian POF patients. In the eight statistically significant CNVs we report, we found five genes involved in reproduction, thus representing potential candidate genes in POF. The current study along with emerging information regarding CNVs, as well as data on their potential association with human diseases, emphasizes the importance of assessing CNVs in cohorts of POF women.

Abstract: Neuroblastomas of the sellar region are exceedingly rare. Only 2 cases have previously been reported. We are reporting the case of a 43-year-old woman who developed progressive bitemporal hemianopsia and visual loss, accompanied by amenorrhea and hyponatremia. Laboratory findings revealed a slightly elevated prolactin level. Cranial MR-imaging displayed an intrasellar and suprasellar lesion with a maximum diameter of 2.5cm that was suspicious for a pituitary adenoma or tuberculum sellae meningioma. ...

DR. LEVY is an assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine, Johns Hopkins University. Premature ovarian failure (POF), also known as primary ovarian insufficiency, is typically defined as amenorrhea with elevated follicle-stimulating hormone levels occurring prior to age 40 years. “Early menopause,” the cessation of ovarian function in the early 40s, probably represents a continuum of ovarian dysfunction lying between formal POF and normal menopause around age 50. to an increasing occurrence of injury. Radiologists’ appreciation of the breadth of injury and its relation to imaging and
clinical findings should enhance the care of these children. Some of the patterns of injury are well known to rad...

Conclusions Our findings suggest that exclusive breastfeeding and concomitant suppression of menses significantly reduce the risk of postpartum relapses in MS. Our findings call into question the benefit of foregoing breastfeeding to start MS therapies and should be confirmed in a larger study.

Conclusions: Continuous LNG 90 mcg/EE 20 mcg was shown to be a safe and effective OC in this direct comparison to a cyclic OC. Suppression of menses and the potential for no bleeding requiring sanitary protection may be provided by this continuous, low-dose OC. (Source: Contraception)

Exclusive Breastfeeding May Cut Postpartum MS Risk

Women with multiple sclerosis who breastfeed exclusively appear to cut their risk of postpartum relapse by fivefold, based on a study of 32 women with MS. In contrast, those who supplement breastfeeding with formula feedings are at the same high risk of relapsing MS symptoms as are those who don't breastfeed at all. It appears that the benefit of exclusive breastfeeding is due to the prolonged amenorrhea it induces, said Dr. Annette Langer-Gould of Stanford (Calif.) University and her associates. The purpose of the study was to investigate the seasonal relationship of athletic amenorrhea and body composition in elite, adolescent, cross-country runners. The participants consisted of 28 female adolescent cross-country runners (mean age +/- SD = 15.4 +/- 1.5 years); 17 eumenorrheics and 11 amenorrheics. The participants' body composition was measured pre- and postseason using dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometer (DXA). The eumenorrheics' postseason BMD was significantly greater than the amenorrheics' postseason BMD (F(1,54) = 16.22, p < .05, partial eta2 = .231). The eumenorrheics' postseason bodyweight (F(1,54) = ...

To the Editor: We read with interest the paper by Badawy et al. , reporting the beneficial effect of goserelin for the prevention of chemotherapy induced amenorrhea and ovarian failure in young breast cancer patients undergoing cytotoxic treatment. Even if we acknowledge the study design and the stringent criteria used for the evaluation of ovarian function recovery after chemotherapy, we have some concerns that we would like to share with the authors and the readers. Conclusion(s): Postmenopausal women treated with BZA 20 or 40 mg with CE 0.625 or 0.45 mg had high rates of cumulative amenorrhea that were similar to those reported with placebo. This new menopausal therapy may offer a favorable bleeding and tolerability profile. (Source: Fertility and Sterility)

CONCLUSION:: Placental site trophoblastic tumor is an unusual malignancy that may present remotely from antecedent gestational events. The relatively slow growth rate of this tumor may explain the lack of PET findings in our case.

This article presents and discusses the arguments for maintaining as well as those for removing the criterion. The psychological and biological literatures on the utility of amenorrhea as a distinguishing diagnostic criterion for AN and as an indicator of illness severity are reviewed. The findings suggest that the majority of differences among patients with AN who do and do not meet the amenorrhea criterion appear largely to reflect nutritional status. Overall, the two groups have few psychological differences. There are mixed findings regarding biological differences between those with AN who do and do not menstruate and t...

Conclusions: Two thirds of women with recent-onset SCA-POI had normal AMH concentrations. Women with SCA-POI, differently from those with iPOI, present a preserved ovarian follicle pool for several years after diagnosis of ovarian insufficiency.
