Vincristine-Induced Unilateral Ptosis in a Childemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Vincristine is a vinca alkaloid used in combination with other agents in the treatment of solid tumors, lymphoma, and leukemia, as well as for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and autoimmune hemolytic anemia. A dose-limiting complication of vinca alkaloids is neurotoxicity. Vincristine is the oldest and also the most neurotoxic agent in this group. Described here is the case of a 4-year-old girl with unilateral palpebral ptosis. She has been diagnosed with precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Ptosis was noted on the 45th day of therapy, and the last vincristine was administered on the 28th day of protocol 1. V...

[Clinical significance of detecting serum erythropoietin in patients with leukemia.]email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSION: AL patients with anemia have significantly higher serum EPO levels than healthy individuals. In AL and IDA patients with moderate or severe anemia, EPO levels are inversely correlated to the level of hemoglobin, suggesting the integrity of the EPO synthesis mechanism in AL patients. Serum EPO level is also associated with bone marrow function in addition to hypoxia and hemoglobin levels, and hematopoiesis deficit in the early stage may be the main cause of anemia. In this study the functional and structural role of a recently identified ADAMTS13 metalloprotease domain mutation S119F was investigated. Secretion from heterologous cells was hampered but not completely eliminated. Secreted S119F was active toward multimeric VWF and FRETS-VWF73 but with abnormal kinetics, having a significantly reduced overall catalytic rate (kcat; 0.88 ± 0.04 s–1 vs 2.78 ± 0.11 s–1) and slightly smaller Michaelis constant (KM; 1.4 ± 0.2µM vs 2.3 ± 0.3µM). A computational model of the metalloprotease domain demonstrates both steric and polar interaction...

The nuclear protein FOG-1 binds transcription factor GATA-1 to facilitate erythroid and megakaryocytic maturation. However, little is known about the function of FOG-1 during myeloid and lymphoid development or how FOG-1 expression is regulated in any tissue. We used in situ hybridization, gain- and loss-of-function studies in zebrafish to address these problems. Zebrafish FOG-1 is expressed in early hematopoietic cells, as well as heart, viscera, and paraspinal neurons, suggesting that it has multifaceted functions in organogenesis. We found that FOG-1 is dispensable for endoderm specification but is required for endoderm...

The patient suffered from sudden onset of intra-abdominal hemorrhage with profuse hemoperitoneum. The patient was treated successfully with a right hemihepatectomy and is in good health after 13 postoperative months. We suggest that peliosis hepatis be considered in patients with hepatic parenchymal hematoma, especially in patients under prolonged synthetic anabolic steroid medication. The possibility ...

In 2008, after reports of an association between erythropoietic stimulating agent (ESA) therapy and the potential for either thrombotic cardiovascular events or more rapid tumor progression in some cancers, the Food and Drug Administration changed the product labeling for ESAs, adding a black box warning as well as more restrictive indications, especially in oncology patients. In addition the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has placed significant restrictions on payments for ESA therapy. These new limitations on ESA have led to increased use of transfusions in anemic cancer patients. This increase in allogen...

Oncostatin M and leukemia inhibitory factor increase hepcidin expression in hepatoma cell lines.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
In conclusion, we demonstrated that OSM and LIF can induce hepcidin expression mainly through the JAK/STAT pathways. Further studies are warranted to evaluate the clinical significance of OSM and LIF in the development of anemia in various inflammatory diseases. Female Zebra Finches (Taeniopygia guttata) Are Chronically but Not Cumulatively “Anemic” during Repeated Egg Laying in Response to Experimental Nest Predationemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
In this study, we investigated the effect of repeated cycles of egg production in response to experimental nest predation (egg removal) on hematological traits in female zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). We predicted that if the negative effect of egg production on hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration was cumulative, with anemia being proportional to reproductive effort, then females laying more clutches, or laying successive clutches without recovery during incubation, would show greater reproductive anemia. In contrast, if females maintain hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration at some minimum functional level ind...

Deferasirox (Exjade) for the treatment of iron overload.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Deferasirox is a once-daily oral iron chelator with established dose-dependent efficacy in both adult and pediatric patients with transfusional iron overload. The clinical development program has demonstrated the efficacy of deferasirox for up to 4.5 years of treatment in patients with various underlying anemias, including beta-thalassemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, sickle cell disease, aplastic anemia, and other rare anemias. In addition to reducing key indicators of total body iron levels (serum ferritin, liver iron concentration, and toxic labile plasma iron), deferasirox has also demonstrated the ability to remove...

Mitochondrial iron metabolism and sideroblastic anemia.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Sideroblastic anemias are a heterogeneous group of disorders, characterized by mitochondrial iron overload in developing red blood cells. The unifying characteristic of all sideroblastic anemias is the ring sideroblast, which is a pathological erythroid precursor containing excessive deposits of non-heme iron in mitochondria with perinuclear distribution creating a ring appearance. Sideroblastic anemias may be hereditary or acquired. Hereditary sideroblastic anemias are caused by defects in genes present on the X chromosome (mutations in the ALAS2, ABCB7, or GRLX5 gene), genes on autosomal chromosomes, or mitochondrial...
