Combination treatment for common glioma type shows promise in mice
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) Gliomas are common brain tumors that comprise about one third of all cancers of the nervous system. In a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), researchers tested a novel combination treatment approach on mice with tumors with characteristics similar to human astrocytomas and found tumor regression in 60 percent of the mice treated. These encouraging results could be the first step toward developing a treatment for this type of brain cancer. (Source: EurekAlert! - Cancer)

French Study Reveals Potential Mesothelioma Treatment Target
A team of French researchers led by Dr. Christophe Blanquart has identified a substance that may better define the severity of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) in the body and provide clues to more effectively manage the rare cancer. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor, as the name indicates, is a protein found in the brain. BDNF is a growth factor and also appears in other tissues in the body. “It seems that BDNF could be a prognostic marker for MPM patients,” Blanquart told The Mesothelioma Center at Asbestos.com. “The level of BDNF in pleural fluids could reflect the severity of disease.” The study was publi...

High-resolution genomic map gives scientists unprecedented view of brain development
(St. Jude Children's Research Hospital) The research will not only aid basic understanding of brain development, but also provide a foundation for understanding the cellular origins of brain disorders caused by errors in development. These anatomical defects include Joubert syndrome, Dandy-Walker malformation and pontocerebellar hypoplasia. The database will enable future studies tracing the cellular origins of childhood brain tumors such as medulloblastoma, astrocytoma and ependymoma.Researchers worldwide can interact with the data via an interface St. Jude has created called Cell Seek. Artificial Intelligence, ‘ Virtual Biopsies ’ May Be The Future Of Understanding Brain Tumors
BOSTON (CBS) — Artificial intelligence is being used increasingly in medicine to make services more efficient and improve patient care. Now, local researchers plan to use the technology to perform “virtual biopsies” of brain tumors. Steven Hibbert considered himself a healthy guy. Then suddenly his life changed on a dime. “I was just kind of sitting there, reading the paper, and went into a seizure,” said Hibbert.
