Fade Fave: Respiratory health effects of ultrafine and fine particle exposure in cyclists
Fade Skinny: Study to investigate the acute respiratory health effects of air pollution related to commuting by bicycle. Finds substantial differences in ultrafine particle number and soot exposure between two urban cycling routes. Exposure to ultrafine particles and soot during cycling was weakly associated with increased exhaled NO, indicative of airway inflammation, and decrements in lung function 6 hours after exposure. A limitation of the study was the relatively small sample size.

Research says that witnessing simple acts of everyday kindness, such as one person giving up a seat on the bus, holding a door open for another, or helping someone pick something that dropped to the floor can promote altruism. This pychological phenomenon that makes us feel great, lifts our emotions and motivates us to do good is called elevation. Witnessing an uplifiting act inspires us to do the same for others. There’s a notion that’s been spread around the spiritual side of the self-help field that suggests one of our primary aims in life should be ego-less enlightenment, a state where we achieve near-perfect inner peace, where we’re one with everything but attached to nothing, and where nothing in the physical world can knock us off balance.
This creates some personal challenges for me because whenever I write about anything remotely spiritual in nature (and sometimes even when I don’t), some readers assume I’m one of the guys promoting this same sort of ideal. Then they question why my behavior do...

Fade Fave: Developing patient improvement programmes in an NHS trust
Fade Skinny: The challenges to providers to develop high-quality services for their customers have never been greater. In the UK, the Darzi Review has focused the attention of clinicians and managers on the need to sustain and improve quality. This paper examines these challenges and considers how the Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust anticipated and responded to them by creating an innovative patient improvement framework linking patient experience, outcomes and safety with its corporate strategies. My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
The bra-color meme that’s sweeping Facebook and allegedly raising awareness of breast cancer got a nice one-two punch from my colleague Frances Tobin.
Allow me to pile on.
Not for myself, but for friends I’ve watched face this beast. Many of them aren’t wearing bras of any color because their breasts are long gone. Instead they might be wearing a lymphedema sleeve on their arms, sometimes for the rest of their lives.
As a member of the all-too-exclusive club of long-term ovarian cancer survivors, let me first say I used to resent the enormous amount of attention ...

Hell, I grew up as a similar percieved thing, which explains part of my interest in the case. Children and the elderly are at particularly high risk of influenza infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that all health care workers (HCWs) receive an annual influenza immunization to protect themselves and their patients.
