Quality of life among people living with mental illness and predictors in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsThe current systematic review and meta-analysis showed that almost half of patients with mental illness had poor QoL. Being illiterate, having a comorbid medical condition, having a low monthly income, having positive symptoms, and having negative symptoms of mental illness were independent predictors of poor QoL. This systematic review and meta-analysis emphasize that poor QoL of people with mental illness in Africa needs attention to reduce its negative consequences. (Source: Quality of Life Research)

Bipolar Conjugated Microporous Polymer Anchored Graphene Hybrids Towards High-Performance Zinc −Organic Batteries
J. Mater. Chem. A, 2024, Accepted Manuscript DOI: 10.1039/D4TA01952K, PaperChengmin Hu, Yumin Chen, Ziyang Song, Ling Miao, Hui Duan, Yaokang Lv, Li Xie, Mingxian Liu, Lihua Gan Redox organic polymers have emerged as cathode candidates for zinc −organic batteries (ZOBs) due to their high electrochemical activity, environmental friendliness and structural designability. However, most organic polymers are confined to... The content of this RSS Feed (c) The Royal Society of Chemistry (Source: RSC - J. Mater. Chem. latest articles)

Challenges in Ventricular Arrhythmia Ablation: Difficult Substrates and Advanced Ablation Strategies
This article provides a brief overview of difficult substrate ablation strategies in patients with premature ventricular contractions (PVC) or ventricular tachycardia (VT) and explores methods to improve outcomes for cases that do not respond to typical ablation techniques.Recent findingsRecent developments highlight the crucial role of advanced imaging and mapping techniques in the visualization, characterization, and localization of challenging ventricular substrates. Additionally, some novel and advanced ablation strategies may be useful when PVC/VT is refractory to conventional ablation treatment.SummaryAn expanding sp...

Very Young Children Exposed to Anesthesia May Be at Higher Risk of Childhood Bipolar Disorder
Infants and toddlers who are exposed to general anesthesia may be at increased risk for bipolar disorder later in childhood compared with infants and toddlers who are not exposed, according to areport inSchizophrenia Bulletin. The association remained after adjusting for other childhood comorbidities and parental psychiatric diagnoses.“In the context of pediatric care, it is essential to recognize the substantial perioperative trauma experienced by children, both physically and psychologically,” wrote Mingyang Sun, M.D., of the People’s Hospital of Zhenghzou University in Henan, China, and colleagues. “Emerging evi...

The clinical picture of bipolar affective disorders in children and adolescents hospitalized at the psychiatric ward in Sosnowiec
CONCLUSIONS: In the studied population of children and adolescents, BD usually started with a depression episode accompanied by a high rate of comorbid disorders and in most cases there was an original misdiagnosis. Study results also point to a significant frequency of some pathological symptoms in this population.PMID:38654505 | DOI:10.12740/PP/OnlineFirst/175719 (Source: Psychiatria Polska)

Prenatal exposure to valproic acid reduces synaptic δ-catenin levels and disrupts ultrasonic vocalization in neonates
Neuropharmacology. 2024 Apr 22:109963. doi: 10.1016/j.neuropharm.2024.109963. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTValproic acid (VPA) is an effective and commonly prescribed drug for epilepsy and bipolar disorder. However, children born from mothers treated with VPA during pregnancy exhibit an increased incidence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although VPA may impair brain development at the cellular level, the mechanism of VPA-induced ASD has not been completely addressed. A previous study has found that VPA treatment strongly reduces δ-catenin mRNA levels in cultured human neurons. δ-catenin is important for the control ...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 525: The Types of Psychosocial Factors Associated with Suicidality Outcomes for People Living with Bipolar Disorder: A Scoping Review
. Jones Bipolar Disorder is associated with high rates of suicidal thoughts, behaviors, and outcomes, yet the lived experience of suicidality and Bipolar Disorder is not particularly well understood. Understanding the role of psychosocial aetiologies in suicidality outcomes for those living with Bipolar Disorder is key for developing appropriately targeted interventions focusing on factors that are amenable to change. In line with PRISMA guidance, we conducted a scoping review to identify the types of psychosocial factors studied in relation to the experience of suicidality for people living with Bipolar Disorder diagn...

Personalized voltage maps guided by cardiac magnetic resonance in the era of high-density mapping
Voltage mapping could identify the conducting channels potentially responsible for ventricular tachycardia (VT). Standard thresholds (0.5-1.5 mV) were established using bipolar catheters. No thresholds have been analyzed with high density mapping catheters. In addition, channels identified by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) has been proven to be related with VT. Oculomotor Abnormalities and Aberrant Neuro-Developmental Markers: Composite Endophenotype for Bipolar I Disorder: Anomalies Oculomotrices et Marqueurs Neuro-D éveloppementaux Aberrants : Endophénotype Composite du Trouble Bipolaire I
CONCLUSIONS: AS and SPEM could enhance the utility of NSSs, and MPAs as markers for BD. The presence of these abnormalities in FEM suggests their role in understanding the etiopathogenesis of BD in patients who are in the early course of illness. These have the potential to be composite endophenotypes and have further utility in early identification in BD.PMID:38651336 | DOI:10.1177/07067437241248048 (Source: Canadian Journal of Psychiatry)

Multiple sclerosis and bipolar disorder: an  overlap between soma and psyche
Tijdschr Psychiatr. 2024;66(3):165-167.ABSTRACTThis clinical vignette describes a 29-year-old woman who had her first neurological manifestations of multiple sclerosis (MS) on the same day as a second lifetime manic episode as part of a bipolar I disorder. The patient was stable for eight years before this episode. An MRI-scan conducted during admission showed multiple demyelinating lesions in the frontal cortex, which might have influenced the development and course of the manic episode. Her manic symptoms went into remission during the same time as her neurological symptoms. This clinical vignette with literature review ...

Analyzing the Quality of Life in Individuals with Fragile X Syndrome in Relation to Sleep and Mental Health
This study included 119 individuals with Fragile X Syndrome who were given different cognitive examinations by a neuropsychologist or by parent-proxy questionnaires. This study focused on the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQoL), the Anxiety, Depression and Mood Scale (ADAMS), the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), but did include other cognitive tests (Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales, Nonverbal IQ, Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule). We identified significant associations between decreases in emotional, social and school domains of PedsQoL and the ADAMS subtests of Generalized Anxiety, Manic/Hy...
