Maternal risk factors for low birthweight and macrosomia: a cross-sectional study in Northern Region, Ghana
CONCLUSION: The prevalence rates of low birthweight and macrosomia were relatively high. Anaemia in the first and third trimesters was strong determinants of low birthweight. Being minority ethnic group, frequency of antenatal visits, and childbirth length reduced the risk of low-weight births. Advanced gestational age and socioeconomic status of mothers were also predictors of macrosomia. Hence, nutrition counselling, community health education, and promotion of lifestyle improvement coupled with strengthening of health service delivery are recommended interventions.PMID:37644518 | PMC:PMC10464333 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-023-00431-0

America Has Reached Peak Therapy. Why Is Our Mental Health Getting Worse?
The U.S. has reached peak therapy. Counseling has become fodder for hit books, podcasts, and movies. Professional athletes, celebrities, and politicians routinely go public with their mental health struggles. And everyone is talking—correctly or not—in the language of therapy, peppering conversations with references to gaslighting, toxic people, and boundaries. All this mainstream awareness is reflected in the data too: by the latest federal estimates, about one in eight U.S. adults now takes an antidepressant and one in five has recently received some kind of mental-health care, an increase of almost 15 mil...

The big idea: why we need to learn to fail better
From tedious blind dates to dud clinical trials, the right kind of failure always helpsYou ’ve probably heard the cheerful quotes:Winston Churchill, with his “success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm”, or CS Lewis, who wrote “failures are finger posts on the road to achievement”. What aboutBillie Jean King, who enthused “losing a tennis match isn’t failure, it’s research”? Maybe you find yourself thinking, “Sure. Easy to say when you’re famous and successful.”For most people, failure is pretty simple: it ’s bad, even shameful. Life is going well if you’renot experi...

A Reassessment of the Impact and Significance of Social Media to Pathology
CONCLUSIONS.—: We identified 6 major premises as motivators of professional SM use and highlight significant counteracting factors. We conclude that the harms of professionalized SM use have not been fully considered in the medical literature and that a change in direction and the creation of new communication platforms would be beneficial.PMID:37639395 | DOI:10.5858/arpa.2022-0463-RA

Augmented Tactile Book: Design of a Multisensory Page Prototype
Stud Health Technol Inform. 2023 Aug 23;306:543-550. doi: 10.3233/SHTI230675.ABSTRACTIn the framework of the LTA project, focusing on leisure reading for children with visual impairment, we present a prototype of multisensory illustration that will be used as a model for future accessible tactile interactive books. This multisensory illustration is based on two approaches to illustrate the storytelling. The first approach consists in embodying the character's legs with the index and middle fingers in order for the user to imitate actions such as walking. The second approach is to offer interactions feedback according to th...

Vocal Behavior Acquisition with a Toy Operating by Sound Detection
Stud Health Technol Inform. 2023 Aug 23;306:433-440. doi: 10.3233/SHTI230656.ABSTRACTWe investigated a speech training support system targeting students in special needs education classes who are engaged in training to acquire a binary relationship where their vocalizations elicit reactions from others. Previously, there was a challenge in maintaining interest and achieving learning effectiveness when teachers intervened to encourage vocalizations using teaching aids such as picture books. To address this, we designed and integrated an electronic circuit with a movable toy that captures the interest of the supported studen...
