Conclusions Uterine tumours with a sarcomatous component have a poor outcome in spite of treatment in comparison to endometrial carcinoma,
probably due to the higher frequency of adverse prognostic factors. In early stages tumour size was the most determining factor
for OS, DFS, LRFS and DMFS. Radiotherapy significantly improved these survivals in advanced cases.

Carcinosarcoma, which comprises less than one percent of all gall bladder neoplasms, is characterized by the presence of variable proportions of carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements. Recently, several reports have described patients suffering from carcinosarcoma of the gall bladder. However, there are no large studies regarding the clinicopathologic features, therapeutic management, and surgical outcome of this disease because the number of patients who undergo resection of gall bladder carcinosarcoma at a single institution is limited. A Medline search was performed using the keywords 'gall bladder' and 'carcinosarc...

We report a case which presented with unusual clinical features and proved cryptic until death. At autopsy, it was a stage IV lung malignancy and histopathology revealed a carcinosarcoma comprising an adenocarcinoma and an osteosarcoma with metastasis to the heart, lymph nodes, and both adrenals. To our knowledge, this is the first case of this subtype with metastasis to the heart. The present case had an unusual clinical presentation and its elusive nature towards diagnosis despite dissemination is noteworthy and unique in the literature.

Abstract A case of a primary hepatic carcinosarcoma, a very uncommon liver tumor in adults, demonstrated by Ga-67 scintigraphy, was
reported. The liver image showed a lesion of low activity in the left lobe of the liver, whereas the Ga-67 image showed a
moderate accumulation in the lesion detected by the liver scan and further indicated a high accumulation extending downwards
from the hepatic lesion. An autopsy revealed that the huge abdominal tumor was composed of hepatocellular carcinoma and malignant
mesenchymoma in the left hepatic lobe and in the lower part of the tumor, respectively. The Ga-67 image de...

We describe the case of a 62-year-old female with an intracapsular ca ex PA of the buccal mucosa with subsequent metastases to the lung. The metastatic deposits resembled benign PA with no histological evidence of malignancy. This pattern of spread is described with mPA, an entity that caused controversy in the past regarding its exact classification as a benign or malignant tumor. The possibility that ca ex PA originates from a mPA, with intracapsular ca ex PA representing an intermediate lesion in a histological continuum, is discussed.

Uterine carcinosarcomas (UCSs) are considered to represent true examples of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Akt plays a key role in the induction of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, but little is known about its involvement in tumorigenesis. Here we examined the functional roles of the Akt/beta-catenin pathway in UCSs. In clinical samples, phospho-Akt (pAkt) expression was found to be significantly increased in mesenchymal compared with epithelial components, exhibiting both positive and negative correlations with nuclear beta-catenin and E-cadherin, respectively. Expression levels of the transcription factor ...

Uterine sarcomas are a rare group of neoplasms with aggressive clinical course and poor prognosis. They are classified into four main histological subtypes in order of decreasing incidence: carcinosarcomas, leiomyosarcomas, endometrial stromal sarcomas and "other" sarcomas. The pathological subtype demands a tailored approach. Surgical resection is regarded as the mainstay of treatment. Total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy represents the standard treatment of uterine sarcomas. Pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection in carcinosarcomas is recommended, given their high incidence of lymph node...

Carcinosarcomas are relatively rare tumors composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. The most common sites involved by this tumor are the head and neck, respiratory tract, uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. Within the gastrointestinal tract this tumor most often occurs in the esophagus, followed by the stomach. Carcinosarcomas are very aggressive tumors associated with a poor prognosis. The first case of carcinosarcoma of the colon was reported in 1986. The case reported here is the only one involving an associated colovesical fistula.

find no evidence of a specific infection. The leukocyte count was 18 000/mm3, and the serum granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and α-fetoprotein (AFP) levels were both elevated, at 66.3 pg/ml
and 1,495 ng/ml, respectively. Computed tomography (CT) showed a gallbladder tumor and we performed extended cholecystectomy.
Postoperatively, the fever subsided and the leukocyte count, serum G-CSF and AFP level normalized. Histologically, the tumor
was a carcinosarcoma of ...

Conclusion We suppose that the similar proportion of p53 overexpression in both the epithelial and mesenchymal components may be one
of the findings explaining the histogenesis of this tumor by combination theory.

Background:
Salivary gland carcinomas are relatively uncommon heterogeneous malignancies characterized by locoregional invasion and distant metastasis. Topoisomerase II alpha (topoII alpha), located at chromosome 17q21-22, is considered a major mediator of cell proliferation and DNA replication. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the expression of topoII in various types of salivary gland tumors and its biological significance.
Methods:
The protein expression of topoII alpha was evaluated immunohistochemically in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue from 54 salivary gland carcinomas and 20 benign tumors (10 ple...

This report describes
a 70-year-old male patient who was diagnosed by documenting the epithelial and mesenchymal components with histopathological
and immunohistochemical methods, and treated by a radical cholecystectomy. The pediculated polypoid tumor had filled the lumen,
originating from the gallbladder fundus. The tumor infiltrated the surrounding connective and adipose tissue overlapping the
muscular layer of its primary site, but had not perforated the serosa nor invaded the liver. The patient, who was treated
only surgically, has remained healthy after 54 months of follow-up, which is the longest documented sur...

CONCLUSION: The poor outcome for these patients may reflect the aggressive nature of carcinosarcoma and that at the time of presentation more than 50% have extra-uterine disease, which was associated with significant poorer survival. Systemic adjuvant therapy has not been associated with significant improvement in the outcome. More studies are needed to better define the appropriate treatment for this rare cancer.

CONCLUSION: In uterine carcinosarcoma, estrogen receptor beta expression is elevated and increases with disease progression, whereas estrogen receptor alpha and progesterone receptor are suppressed. Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 expression is increased, whereas insulin-like growth factor receptor is lower than in normal endometrium. These data support a potential role for estrogen receptor beta in disease progression via crosstalk with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2.

Conclusions: Endometrial stromal sarcoma with extensive endometrioid glandular differentiation is rare. The presence of glands often results in diagnostic difficulty with a significant risk of misdiagnosis or delay in diagnosis. It is likely that some cases reported in the literature as aggressive endometriosis represent this entity.

Pulmonary carcinosarcoma is a rarely encountered tumor. We treated a patient who had an intrabronchial polypoid lesion that required a diagnostic differentiation from epithelial-mesenchymal mixed neoplasms inclusive of pleomorphic adenoma, and that was diagnosed by immunohistochemical staining to be a true carcinosarcoma. A 69-year-old man underwent left pneumonectomy in November 2000 with a diagnosis of atelectasis resulting from a tumor obstructing the left lower lobar bronchus, and also a lung abscess. The tumor was initially diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma, since it contained both benign-looking epithelial and mes...

Abstract Carcinosarcomas are rare, highly aggressive neoplasms that most commonly arise from the female genital tract but can unusually
present in extragenital locations. To the best of our knowledge, only three cases of primary retroperitoneal, extragenital
carcinosarcomas have been documented in the English literature to date. A 72-year-old woman presented with onset of abdominal
pain and urinary retention. Computed tomography scan revealed a mass in the retroperitoneal space with hydronephrosis and
partial obstruction of the left ureter. Lost to follow-up at that time, the patient returned 6 months l...

Carcinosarcoma of extragenital organs is rare. In this article, a case of primary carcinosarcoma of the spleen, which presented as painful splenomegaly is reported. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second reported case of primary splenic carcinosarcoma in English literature. The pathogenesis of these tumors is incompletely understood. No specific treatment guidelines exist for these aggressive tumors, surgery being the mainstay of treatment. The prognosis remains poor regardless of the adjuvant therapy used. Abstract Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is primarily linked to colorectal and endometrial cancer, but is associated
with a broad tumor spectrum. Though not formally part of the syndrome, occasional sarcomas have been reported in individuals
with HNPCC. We used the national Danish HNPCC-register to identify HNPCC families in which sarcomas had been diagnosed. Fourteen
sarcomas were identified in families with mutations in MSH2, MSH6, and MLH1. The median age at sarcoma diagnosis was 43 (15–74) years. Soft tissue sarcomas predominated followed by uterine sarcomas
and eight histopathol...
